Upon our return we will travel to Zephyr Point Camp and Conference Center in Lake Tahoe Nevada where I will complete a week of training in the “Art of Transitional Ministry”. This course equips pastors for interim ministry. Don’t let the interim term rattle you. The skills they teach will help the Session and me to change some old habits and establish some new best practices upon my return. My belief is that the training at Zephyr Point will help us (the Session and me) lead a visioning process and complete a strategic plan. There is already a strategic planning committee at work. When my family and I are not traveling I have some time to focus on some spiritual and emotional development. Being disengaged from congregational commitments will give me space to work with a spiritual director and continue the practice of contemplative prayer. My goal is to be able to practice at least an hour of silent prayer daily by the end of the renewal time. I believe this will put me more in touch with The Holy Spirit and will provide much needed renewal and growth. I will also get to spend time writing about the experiences we have and look forward to laughing as often as possible throughout the renewal period. The time and money you have graciously given my family and me is something for which we will be forever grateful.

Bon Voyage Party!

Join us on Sunday, May 19th following worship for a brief party to wish the McCormicks’ a wonderful sabbatical, full of fun, renewal, relaxation and time spent with family. Light refreshments will be served, no lunch!

As a part of the celebration, we would like to give them a “Blessing Box”. This would contain slips of paper on which the congregation would write how the McCormick family (individually or jointly) have been a blessing to you or this church. Ideally we would get over 70 “blessings” to put in the box and they could retrieve and read one per day while they are away from the congregation. Slips of paper for this purpose are included below and in upcoming May bulletins, or you can just use a small note paper of your choosing. All the blessing will be gathered and placed in a nice box and presented to them during the party.

We hope you can plan to spend a little time at this celebration following worship on May 19th!

Clifton Ave. Church of God Food Pantry

Over the past few years we have been working with Clifton Ave. Church of God. Once a month, we have a group from our church go to Clifton Ave. Church of God to prepare breakfast for people who attend the Food Pantry. We also collect food to donate to the pantry. We will have Food Bags available in June. Please check the bulletin for upcoming dates.

Coffee and Dessert with the McCormick’s Save the DATE - May 19

Join us as we have Coffee and Dessert with the McCormick Family immediately

after church.

Join in the fun! A sign-up sheet is posted for the Dayton Dragons game on Monday, June 10, at 7:00 p.m. Ticket cost is $10.00 each. Dinner plans before the game are TBD. Make checks payable to Northminster. Deadline to sign up is May 12.

You’re invited to join us!

Beginning June 1 members of the Contemplative Prayer Group, the Tuesday morning Bible Study Group, Session and anyone who is interested will be joining together for a 30 day devotional - Let Nothing Disturb You by Teresa of Avila. This is a simple, easy, personal devotional. This will take place toward the beginning of the McCormick’s Renewal leave, and they will be reading the devotionals alongside us. We invite you to join us in prayer for the family during this time of rest and renewal. If you would like to be a part of practicing the devotionals, we are placing a group order for the books. Cost is $10.00 each, and deadline for ordering is May 5. There is a sign-up sheet in the Family Room or you can call the church office and give your name to Tammy to include on the list.

We hope that you will join us in the

devotionals. Whether you choose to participate

in this or not, we hope that you will be praying for safe travels as well as rest and renewal for

the family during their time away.

This offering will be collected on June 9 and goes to youth ministries and to help children at risk. Please see a posting on the bulletin board of Northminster’s 2017 and 2018 special offerings along with the special offerings collected nationally.

Thank you for your gift to One Great Hour of Sharing. Your gift enables the church to share God’s love with our neighbors in need around the world by providing relief to those affected by natural disasters, provide food to the hungry, and help to empower the poor and oppressed. As of April 21, we have collected $1,479.00 Thank you for your donations!

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life will be held May 31 at 6:00 p.m. at the Clark County Fairgrounds. The luminary ceremony is an important part of this event. It is a way to honor cancer survivors or remember a loved who lost their battle. The Mission Committee will be selling luminaries before and after church on May 5, 12, and 19.

Please continue to clean and donate your used pill bottles. There is a box for this collection in the Family Room. Please check the Cafe schedule to see if there is an open date you could volunteer to host the Cafe. Thank you! Thank you! A big thank you for always being so responsive to our mission projects!

EXTRA

Animal Welfare League The mission committee is once again asking for donations of old blankets, rugs, towels and wash cloths for the Animal Welfare League. A box will be located in the Family Room in June for your donations.

Session Highlights

The Session met in stated meeting April 23, 2019. Rev. Dwight McCormick opened the meeting with prayer. Ruling Elder Jim Griffin shared a devotional thought.

Worship and Music Committee is working to obtain guest preachers for the ten Sundays of the Pastor’s sabbatical leave. So far, we have a commitment from Rev. Amy Duiker to preach on June 2, June 9, July 14, July 21, and July 28. We are waiting to hear about the other 5 Sundays.

Finance Committee report: The financial report through March 30, 2019 showed a year-to-date total income of $60,050 and total expenses of $45,881, giving a balance of $14,169. However, the Treasurer explained that the general fund has a positive balance due to seven giving units having paid their annual pledges in full in February; if not for those advance payments, the general fund would have a deficit of more than $3000 at this time.

Session approved two motions from the Mission Committee: 1) collecting used or new towels, small rugs, and blankets for the Animal Welfare League on all Sundays in June; and 2) selling luminaries on May 5th, 12th, and 19th in support of Relay for Life.

The next stated meeting of Session is May 16, 2019 at 7:00 PM (the date was moved up in order to take place before the Pastor’s leave begins). Please continue to pray for the Pastor and Session as we serve

this congregation and our Lord Jesus Christ.

PW is planning to publish a Northminster Cookbook.

There are always so many great dishes at our church

dinners and potlucks that we would like to publish

the recipes to be able to share them with the entire

congregation. In order to do this, we need the help

of the church members. Please submit any and as

many of your favorite recipes as you would like. If we

get enough, we will turn them into our own church

cookbook.

Make sure you have your name on each recipe you

submit. You may also add comments about its origin

or whether it is an old family recipe or just your

family’s favorite. Help us make this a successful

project.

There will be a box in the family room for any reci-

pes submitted. Give us all of your favorites. We are

excited about this project and would like as many as

possible to participate.

If you have any questions, see a member of the PW

Board:

Terry Rigio, Debbie Dodds, Judy Heaton,

Nancy Baker, and Shirley Hulsey.

A NOTE FROM THE TREASURER . . . . . . ..

What is “planned giving”? While all giving requires some kind of planning, planned giving refers to the thoughtful and prayerful consideration people use to decide where their assets go after they die (for example: family, various causes, church).
