FROM THE DESKTOPBy: Bill Kallgren - Editor

Happy New Year. It is hard to believethat 2006 has arrived. As the Holidayseason passes, the long nights allow acertain amount of time to reflect on thepast year as well as plan for the upcomingyear. I don’t know exactly what it is aboutthe new year which is so compelling, after all we are simply placed here on thisspinning globe racing across the cosmos.A more or less random planet, circling arandom sun in a random galaxy, one outof countless billions. Nothing really spe-cial, but yet this is all we know. So wepick a random date and call it the NewYear. And each new year, many of us taketo reflecting on the past year and makevarious resolutions for the new year. Ab-solutely fascinating if you allow yourmind to think about it.

Well, Happy New Year; even if it is,more or less, a random date picked cen-turies ago to mark the start of thenew year.

So with the above in mind I am lookingforward to enjoying the winter monthsand winter sports. 2006 is an Olympicyear and I anticipate watching some ofthe sports. My favorite events are thedownhill skiing (Downhill, Grand Sla-lom and Slalom, I am not keen on thefreestyle events), the trio of sleddingevents (toboggan, luge and skeleton) andthe speed skating, particularly on thelong track, although the short track isalso very exciting.

As striking news to our regular read-ers, I have decided to sell my Porsches. Iwill turn 38 with the change in the yearand have decided that I need a change.Oh, don’t fret, this does not mean that Iam getting out of Porsche ownership. Asyou will recall from last month’s article,

I have been waffling on either upgradingmy current car to get involved in clubracing or sell and look to buy somethingtrack ready. After consulting with a num-ber of club members, including EdgarBroadhead, Damon Josz and Andy andLaurie Sanborn, the general consensusis that buying a car already setup will bemore economical in the long run. Checkthe classifieds if you are looking for anew used car!

For 2006, the Northlander will con-tinue the highly successful Contributorof the Year program. 2005 Contributorsof the Year included Judy Hendricksonrecognized for Porsche Photography,Jack Saunders recognized for his sub-missions of Porsche Technology and ourLiterate Porschephile for 2005, the Jack-son Family for recounting their first tripto a Porsche Parade. Starting things offfor this January edition please check ourfirst submission from Ephraim Dobbinsrecounting his experiences in Shanghaifor the final round of the 2005 F1 series.Ephraim managed getting to the openinground in Australia as well as final roundin 2005. With some luck, we hope hereports from additional rounds for 2006.Also when we opened our mail thismonth, we were lucky enough to find acopy of a letter from John Killion to theeremitic Herr Hanzy. The games are afootfor the 2006 Contributor of the Year.

I hope you have a happy new year andwish you all the best for 2006.

FROM THE PRESIDENTBy: Janet Leach - President

I hope you and your family enjoyedthe holiday season. What a busy time ofyear! The extra time off from work forChristmas and New Years is a welcomebreak to settle into the new year.

We have another change for our board;our webmaster, Berthold Langer, will beleaving us in January to take a job inGermany. He stepped right in whenLoosey and Colin left and he, along withNick Shanny, have done a great job withthe NCR website. It is unfortunate thatwe will be losing Berthold. I had thepleasure of going out to dinner with himand a few other club members last monthand got to know him a little better. Hehas a great sense of humor and will be agreat addition to the company he is join-ing. We are happy that he will be keep-ing his membership with North Countryand as his company is based in bothGermany and the U.S., we may get theopportunity to see him on one of his tripsto the states. We have a focus groupworking on ideas for the website; if youhave any thoughts as to what you’d liketo see on the website, please send them in

ENTHUSIAST OF THE YEAR

The North Country Region of the Por-sche Club of America is particularlyblessed to have an exceedingly activemembership, with a large number ofparticipants for all club activities. The2005 season started with a series of TechSessions in the winter. With the arrival ofspring the club held the first drivingactivities including a Car Control Clinicas well as a Spring Rally. As summerapproached, club activities turned toDriver’s Education. The competitivespirit of the North Country Region wascatered to by an extremely successfulAutocross series and things wrapped upwith our wonderful Fall Rally. Inter-spersed throughout the year were a num-ber of social activities and car shows.

Participation within the club is ex-ceeding strong making selection of the

enthusiast of the year very chal-lenging. With the approach ofour Annual Banquet held inNovember, a call for nomina-tions for the Doug HendricksonEnthusiast of the Year Awardwent out to the membership. As the nominations started topour in and were opened, itwas quickly clear that the mem-bership of the club had alreadyselected an Enthusiast of theYear. The name that was nomi-nated over and over was that ofDavid Churcher, official clubphotographer and chairman ofthe Yearbook committee.

Club members will quicklyrecognize David where he canbe found at almost any clubevent, always peering through

the lens of his omnipresent Nikon. FromTechnical Sessions in the winter, to avery wet Control Control Clinic in earlyspring to the heat of the summer drivingseason, David worked hard at the manyclub events providing many of the pho-tographs which grace the pages of theNorthlander as well as appear on theNCR website. During the heat of thesummer, David was asked to head toHershey for the annual Parade where hewas one of a select few official clubphotographers. David was also a fea-tured in our Porschephile Profile in theMarch 2005 edition of our club newslet-ter. Rain or shine, stifling heat or bittercold, David can be found crafting his artwith gelatine and silver.

A native of Australia, David took upphotography in 1962 snapping shots ofracing cars and race car drivers, the likes

of Sir Jack Brabham, David Gurney and Phil Hill. Indeed, one of David's photosof Jim Clark winning the 1964 running of the Indianapolis 500 appeared on thecover of the magazine Sports Car World. David acquired his first and to date onlyPorsche in 2001, a1984 911 Carrera with the license plate Helmi, chosen after thename of his daughter. Purchased sight unseen, David was completing a three yearwork assignment in Heildelberg and purchased the car with assistance from fellowclub members Ellen Beck and Judy Hendrickson. Arriving back in the US, Davidquickly picked up his camera and headed out to NCR club events.

Next time you are at an event make plans to meet this exceptional individual,David Churcher recognized as the 2005 Doug Henrickson Enthusiast of the Year.

Dear Hanzy mien Hanzy:

First thing off, I want to thank you forthat wonderful and generous gift ofyummy mushrooms from your aunt’sgarden, and I am happy to report thatthey arrived in my mailbox as fresh andpristine as they possibly could have. Iimmediately added them to a red sauceI’d been simmering and eventually satdown to enjoy a delightful Italian mealin the company of my wife’s AfricanGray parrot. His name is Merlin, butI’ve always thought that Luciferwould’ve been a far more fitting namefor him considering his habits and per-sonality. And so it was that he and I satdown to eat and review the tapes frommy last miserable performance at NHIS.

About halfway through my meal, as Iwas blissfully twirling my fork throughthin spaghetti and puddles of dark, redand very sinister-looking sauce, I began

to get the strange sensation that theroom was becoming smaller, as if thewalls were closing in on us, and I alsobegan to irrationally suspect that some-one had removed, or possibly stolen, allthe glass panes from the windows in myroom. I suddenly felt strangely exposedand privately vulnerable to the raw ele-ments of the outside and hostile world.

As I was trying to comprehend thesesudden and curious developments, Mer-lin turned to me and said, “You call thatdriving? My Grandmother could do bet-ter than that.”

Now, a prudent person would be jus-tifiably alarmed to be directly addressedby a creature not of his species, but overthe years I’ve actually become quiteused to Merlin’s smart mouth and per-petual criticism concerning my groom-ing habits, guitar playing and cooking, but I honestly felt he went a bit too farthis time with his petulant ridicule, so Ibravely asked, “What do you know aboutyour Grandmother? You were hatchedin an incubator, like a chicken egg.”

Nothing ruffles that big bird’s feath-ers, at least nothing I’ve ever thrown athim. Pound for pound he’s the toughest, meanest and most arrogant animal I’veever lived with, and many is the timeI’ve considered showing the open doorto him. But so far I’ve yet to hand him hisfreedom. Not that I’d miss him all thatmuch, I’m just terrified that he’ll imme-diately teach all the local crows, bluejays and various other winged miscre-ants how to speak in my language, thenorganize them and station them in thetrees above where I park my car. So forthe most part I just leave him alone in hiscage, peacefully, where he spends mostof his time quietly lifting free weights, writing cheeseball legalese appeals, andfiguring out how to get under my other-wise acceptably thick skin.

“You missed that apex by a mile,” hesaid while casually stretching his largegray wings. “And your hand work isawful. Just look at that!” hea d d e dwith a distinct and deliberatesnicker, suggesting that he couldsomehow do better if givena chance.

Occasionally, I consider myselfto be a reasonably patient man butthis bird was really beginning toannoy me, and the steady and unex-plained condensing of the room wasgenerating a growing sense of alarmfor me when I said to him with con-trived and shaky confidence, “Liketo see you do better.”

His only response was to squawk,“Okay,” and he flew straight fromhis perch right into the TV screen Iwas watching. He didn’t hit it, heflew into it, and the next thing I sawwas Merlin in my 944, driving withone foot on the wheel and the otheron the shifter.

Now Hanzy, I know you may findthis hard to believe but that crazy

bird can drive! He was diving into thecarousel like a fighter pilot and passingcars like they were sitting on jack stands, better than I could ever do on my bestday. I’m still not entirely sure how hewas working the pedals, but with resultslike that why quibble with silly thingslike methods. I watched as he drove thesame precise line each time, around andaround in utter perfection, whackingapexes left and right, hitting all the brak-ing points at just the right time, andcarrying some serious speed around thetrack in my car, and I silently felt myblood beginning to boil with extremeand unwarranted jealousy towards myformerly fine feathered friend. Eventu-ally, he was black flagged by a sharp-eyed corner worker for driving withouta helmet and had to pull into the pits, andI felt my dangerously elevated bloodpressure return to a moresustainable level.

But the damage was done for Merlinand his day at the track was over. He

briefly argued with the Track Mas-ter, claiming his skull was

constructed in as u p e r i o r

Page 16: Northlander · 2007. 4. 19. · Asst. Editor Editor Advertising Tracey Levasseur Bill Kallgren OPEN 207-247-3385 603-882-1693 Statement of Policy Northlander is the official publication

manner to that of humans, thus negatingthe need for a helmet, but the TrackMaster wasn’t buying it. At that point,Merlin selected one of his more colorfulcurses and delivered it with precision tothe stunned crowd who had gatheredaround my car, calling them all, “Blouse-wearing, poodle-walking, pinkie-point-ers,” as he flew from the TV screen backto his foul perch in my shrinkinglivingroom.

“Told ya,” he said to me with his usualsmugness. “Imagine what I could’vedone if you’d sprung for the turbo modelinstead of the kiddy car.”

That was the last straw for me, andthrough the fog of my increasing para-noia and disorientation I said to him,“Yea, but I bet you don’t know how toturn on the drizzen flippers,” hoping toconfuse him with the one word I think Iknow in German.

“Piece of cake,” he hollered, and flewback through the screen into my car. Iwatched as he tripped the lever through

all of its functions, smugly demonstrat-ing his erudite knowledge of its work-ings. He turned to face me and started tosay, “See? I don’t know what makes youthink you’re higher than I am on theevolutionary ladder, but... HEY! Don’ttouch that...”

I immediately grabbed the remote andpaused the tape, freezing his well-honedbeak in mid-insult and chuckling tomyself over the panicked look in hiseyes. I slurped the last of my now-suspect spaghetti and reached over toturn off the TV. “That’s what makes methe superior being,” I said to his glacialform. “Technology.”

There is no substitute.

-John Killion, Car 168

I had the chance tobe in China for busi-ness in early Octoberthis year and in Shang-hai at the time of theChinese Grand Prix. Before describing theF1 event some ac-count of local color isin order and I have tochoose the scariestride(s) I have evertaken, the Shanghai taxis.

In Shanghai all the taxis are the same,VW Santanas made in a plant just out-side the city near the circuit. Withoutexception every taxi driver is crazy. Whenyou look at the time on the acceleratorand brake for a race driver it might be90%. The Shanghai taxi drivers have tobe closer to 100%. In the city they dartand cross lanes to gain a couple of feet. They show no inclination to lift to avoidhitting pedestrians or bicyclists. On the

highways they swerve across laneshonking and flashing their lights, in onecase cutting off a bus by swerving acrosshis nose when the bus’s front bumperwas just ahead of my peripheral visionwhile sitting in the rear seat. At that pointI was sure there was no way we wouldn’thit. It seemed impossible we wouldn’tcollide and I literally braced for the im-pact. As it turns out we did not touch, thebus nailed its brakes. I think this behav-ior is so common that the drivers antici-

pate it and are alwaysready to jump on thebrakes. After the nearmiss I looked over at thecolleague I was travel-ing with from the US,whose eyes were likesaucers, and commentedthat the taxi driver prob-ably feels safe becauseany impact would becushioned by the 12 gal-lon propane tank thatpowers that cab. Yup,they mostly all run onpropane tanks in thetrunk. We figured the ex-Hold On! Shanghai Taxi in Traffic

plosion would mercifully keep us froman agonizing end trapped in the twistedwreck of the cab when a bus driverdidn’t react in time.

The event itself went off prettysmoothly, especially considering thisis just the second year. The circuit islocated something like 50km outsideof the city. The easiest way to make itout there seemed to be to take advan-tage of the shuttle buses that ran fromfour locations around Shanghai.

There were literally thousands ofbuses that had been pulled into servicefor the event. During the ride out Inoticed at every intersection therewould be someone standing in thecrowd (there seemed to always becrowds on the streets) holding up alarge sign with an arrow. He wouldstep out toward the bus and hold up thesign. Apparently many of the bus driv-

ers only knew their local routes and thismeasure was taken to keep them fromgetting lost. I can only imagine that therewere bus loads of people driving aim-lessly around last year since this was anew thing.

Once we arrived at the circuit it was aquick walk to my seat, right at the end ofthe first hairpin turn. I went into the grand-stand and checked out the view and thenheaded out to do some souvenir shop-ping. An interesting aspect of this was theso-called “fence vendors.” On the wayinto the circuit there were numerous ven-dors selling team hats, flags and drinks.Once inside the fence surrounding thecircuit there were the usual souvenir stores, clustered at the main grandstands. Therewere stores for most of the teams, spon-sors and the event merchandise itself. The

thing that was interesting was that thevendors outside the circuit were doing amassive business selling “through thefence.” Most things could be passedthrough the fence and larger items wentover it. These vendors were spread outat what seemed 6-10 foot intervalsaround the circuit and were well orga-nized. For souvenirs you could get hatsand flags for the major teams that seemedto be the genuine article, identical towhat was at the manufacturer stores atless than a tenth the price. The tradethrough the fence was extremely activefor souvenirs as well as food and drink. It was very out in the open and there wasno interest in the police and securitypersonnel to intervene. Of course therewas absolutely no one selling any gearthat was event or local sponsor items. Those souvenirs were only sold at fullretail in the circuit. It seemed that cut-ting into the sales of team sponsoredsouvenirs wasn’t a problem but you bet-ter not touch the organizer or local spon-sor sales.

As the morning wore on and I didsome shopping, both inside and outside

vendors, it wasclear that havingone of mycompany’s localemployees withme was extremelyhelpful both interms of gettingsome info anddickering with thefence vendors. While everythingat the inside storeshad a fixed pricethe fence vendorsrequired a signifi-cant and heatedamount of negotia-

tion. My tip for anyone that is in asimilar circumstance is to go to a ven-dor that looks most likely to be a collegestudent looking to make a buck. Theyseemed to be quick to cut to the pricethey wanted without much back andforth. The other thing that started tobecome clear was that the vendors an-ticipated a lot of Ferrari fans showingup and there weren’t. Last year wasapparently a sea of red as the localsadopted Ferrari in a large majority. Asthe tides turned this year so did theirallegiances but the souvenir vendorsdidn’t follow this. The Renault gearwas selling very quickly, McClaren wassomewhat popular and there were a lotof red hats piling up. By the time therace started you pretty much could notfind a Renault hat anywhere.

The race, and preliminary events, were somewhat uneventful. The CarreraCup race was held about three hoursbefore the F1 race and was pretty bor-ing from where I sat. I didn’t see anypassing and the leader quickly pulledaway and never looked back. The raceitself seemed pretty short as well.

The F1 race started with a bang asMichael Schumacher managed to collidewith the Minardi of Albers in front of meas they were coming out of the pit to formup on the grid a full half hour before theywould be sent out on the formation lap.Even after watching Tivo’ed replays Ican’t figure out how it happened.Schumacher was weaving hard back andforth and slammed into Albers but whatwas he weaving for? He was going to beparked on the starting grid for half an hourand any heat he put in the tires would belong gone.

One thing I was struck by from my seatin the stands was how truly poorly theFerrari was going. Watching the qualify-ing on TV it looked from the segmenttimes that they had set the car up forstraight line speed. Sitting at the track onthe day of the race it was clear the Ferrarihad massive understeer at the hairpin turnI was at. Every car except theirs couldhook down to the apex but the Ferrariplowed way out into the turn. After maybeten laps they seemed to be able to get it toturn in better but until then the car lookedawful. The other thing was thatSchumacher had to start at the back in his

T-car due to his earlier collision and Iexpected to see him move up prettyquick into at least the top half. Hecouldn’t move up at all and seemedunable to even reel in the Jordan aheadof him. It was surprising to see himstuck many car lengths behind the Jor-dan lap after lap making up no groundespecially since they were both onBridgestones.

After watching the Ferrari teamscramble for half an hour to get a T-carready the race got underway and Alonsojust charged out. Fisichella was just fastenough that he didn’t appear to be hold-ing up the McClaren’s but Alonso waspulling out at a second a lap. For abouthalf the race, until Montoya retired, itwas interesting to see if the McClarenscould jump Fisichella and put the Con-structors championship up for grabs.Once Montoya retired the only ques-tion was whether the Renaults wouldbreak. They didn’t and it was their year.

All in all it was a great experience toget to China and see this event, espe-cially as it was the book end race to mytrip to Australia in March.

At the 2005 Annual Banquet, the staff of the Northlander were pleased toannounce our inaugural Contributor Of the Year Awards for excellence in submis-sions to the newsletter. A team of expert judges were gathered to review thesubmissions over the past year and we are happy to announce the 2005 NorthlanderContributor of the Year Awards.

Porsche History – For excellence in historical submissions. Unfortunately wedidn’t receive any submissions in this category.

Porsche Technology – For excellence in technical submissions. This turned outto be a light category for the competition. The winner with a unanimous vote ofour highly regarded judges was Jack Saunders. "Let’s Talk Torque" appeared in theJune edition of the newsletter.

Porsche Photography – For excellence in photographic submissions. The North-lander received over twelve submissions in this category. Farthest abroad wasEphriam Dobbins with a great set of shots from the F1 race in Melbourne Australiahowever we move closer to home to find our winner.

The overwhelming winner in this category was Judy Hendrickson whose submis-sions include a series of photos from the Ralph Lauren Car exhibit which appearedin our June edition. A strong follow-up appeared in our August edition featuringvintage race cars from the Hershey Parade. The coup de grace appeared in ourSeptember edition with a series of photos of Judy’s excellent 356 restoration.

The Literate Porschephile – For excellence in fiction and storytelling. We hadalmost twenty entries in this most hotly contested category including SteveCarpenter’s "Blue Ridge Parkway" adventure, Vic Oliver’s story of a concoursobsession and Jeff Breuwer’s recounting of his first autocross. My personal handsdown vote in this category was John Killon’s "Dear Hazy, Mein Hanzy," howeverour board of judges hotly discussed and reviewed the submissions and ultimatelyit was the Jackson Family’s submission “One with the Machine” winning ourinaugural award for the Literate Porschephile. This story appeared in our AugustEdition of the Northlander and is an excellent recounting of the family’s first tripto a Porsche Parade. Congratulations!
