Delicate truce at Medupi

Marken Primary School last week presented a production called “Ingenious,” written and produced by Sonja Jordaan. Altogether 11 shows were the result of 14 months of preparation and numerous hours spent in rehearsals. Last Friday evening the last show bedazzled a group of VIP guests including suppliers and sponsors of the school. A SABC-camera team recorded parts of the event for Morning Live on SABC 2. All the grades participated in telling the story of a school bully and his victim who, as part of their punishment for fighting at school, had to clean up the store room. In the process a lamp is broken and a genie appears with helpers such as Cupid, Tinkerbell, Captain Hook, Simba the Lion and Superman. All of the 285 learners of Marken Primary took part in this creative and well-organised event incorpo-rating over 250 songs as each grade presented a different theme on stage. LEPHALALE - More than 18 000 workers nervously returned to the Medupi construction site last week following protest action which saw the project closed to parts of its labour force since Wednesday 12 September. Rumours abounded again on Tuesday that the strike would resume and reports of threats written on bathroom walls calling for violent action abounded. Northern News spoke to the Medupi GM, Roman Crookes last Thursday, who said that these kinds of rumours were unfounded and unfortunate.

Crookes explains that the aggrieved parties are workers whose contracts have come to an end due to demobilisation following the completion of certain project works.

“The process and terms of their contracts were well-explained and understood by these workers as well as unions prior to their employment. This has, however, not prevented confusion to set in and a group of 80 workers decided to protest without following the agreed processes available to deal with their grievances.”

Several workshops were held last week to remind workers how the demobilisation process works and that they should take into account that projects will come to an end and to plan ahead.

Is Malema coming to Mokopane?Representatives of about 23 villages from Mokopane and Mapela indicated that they were going to participate in a protest march to Anglo Platinum’s Mogalakwena mine where memorandums will be handed to representatives of Anglo Platinum, PlatReef and Lonmin.

At the time of going to print it wasn’t exactly clear what these memorandums would contain, but organisers said they were being supported in their cause by the ANC Youth League.

They even vowed that former Youth League President, Julius Malema, would participate in today’s action.

On Wednesday Malema was granted R10 000 bail when he appeared in the Polokwane Regional Court on a charge of money laundering.

The march was scheduled to start at Machikiri at 10:00 today.

LEPHALALE - Drug-related crimes have increased nationally with 44, 8% since 2009, this shocking fact was made public last week when the police minister, Nathi Mthethwa, released the annual crime statistics for 2011/2012.

Commenting on the year-on-year increase of over 15%, Mthethwa said: “Drug trafficking must become everybody’s concern.”

A primary school in Lephalale took his advice and sent out a letter, asking for help from different government departments and institutions. The request is to intervene in the school’s growing drug problems.

The letter which was signed by the principal and school board chairperson states: “We as the inclusive committee of the above mentioned school experienced learners with drug problems as from Grade 1 to the last grade, Grade 7. We have tried to help them, but it seems to be beyond our efforts because we even called their parents and realised they are also alcoholics and drug users. We ask assistance from you as colleagues in public service concerning the above problem.”

The letter was sent to the local police office, social workers in the area, the Induna, the Lephalale municipality, the department of education’s circuit office, the ward committee, Love Life and the department of health.

Three die in collisionVILLA NORA - Three people died in a head-on collision Monday night near Villa Nora. According to W/O Frans Mokoena a Toyota Corolla was traveling on the wrong side of the road when it collided with a mini bus. The Corolla's driver and two passengers died at the scene of the accident.

Delicate truce at MedupiLast week Monday social networks were buzzing about an

stone throwing at the site. On Thursday it was reported that the site was again being evacuated.

Public order policing units as well as private security companies remained on site this week. According to Crookes work is progressing on all six units of the station and although monetary losses occurred due to damages caused by protestors the site did not lose too much time and the project should finish on schedule.

Politiek en welsynOp die vooraand van die Oktober-reses, soos wat hierdie kort skoolvakansie altyd bekend gestaan het, is ons as te ware in die pylvak van die jaar. As ons weer ons oë uitvee is dit Kersfees!

Maar voor ons daar kom kan ons uitsien na een van die lekkerste tye van die jaar gedurende hierdie laaste kwartaal.

Dit is jammer dat politici hul spiere vir mekaar moet wys ten koste van produksie en stabiliteit op plekke soos die Medupi kragstasie projek in Lephalale en ons platinamyne in Mokopane. Maar as mens kyk hoe vinnig Suid-Afrikaanse politici, hul families en vriende welvaart bymekaarmaak, is dit te verstane dat die stryd om die beheer van die tenderproses met hand en tand geveg sal word.

Intussen hou dieselfde belastingbetalers wat die tenderkoffers vol hou ook die ratte van die land se sosiale masjien aan die draai.

So ondersteun asseblief al hierdie aktiwiteite en weet na elke naweek se jolyt dat jy ‘n bydrae gemaak het tot die versorging van bejaardes, kankerondersteuning of die een of ander welsysnsfunksie waavoor die staat net nie meer geld het nie.

Tolerance. Isn’t that the watchword of the day? You can be anything but intolerant. This may come as a surprise to a nonbeliever, but all the strong Christians that I know are very tolerant.

As believers, we have a worldview that comes from our study of Scripture and from our faith in Jesus Christ.

We believe these things are true, so when we talk to someone who is not a believer, we try to convince him or her. We engage in evangelism.

We want them to believe in Jesus as we do. But we also know that some people, after hearing what we have to say, will disagree. So what do we do? Do we scream in their face? No, of course not.

Although we don’t agree with them, we still are tolerant.

Dit is agt uur. Die klaskamer staan gereed. Die bus met die skool kinders het ge-ariveer en die ‘onderwyseres’ is reg om met die eerste les te begin.

Dit is Vrydag, 14 September 2012, ‘n gewone skool dag, maar leerders van LEWENSGELUK OPVOEDKUNDIGE HULPSENTRUM, Lephalale, sit nie agter lessenaars nie. Vandag is die dak van die ‘klaskamer’ die blou hemel, die mure die natuurskoon van die Mokolo Dam Natuurreservaat, die sand onder ons voete die lessenaar, en die helderskoon water die swart bord. Vandag gaan die kinders leer om swartbaars te vang!

Die kurrikulum is eenvoudig: les 1 – hoe om ‘n sagte plastiek kunsaas reg aan die hoek te sit, les 2 – hoe om ‘n doeltreffende knoop te maak, en les 3 – hoe om ‘n swartbaars te vang.

Die kinders raak gou kriewelrig, en kort-kort swaai die koppe water se kant toe. Dit is tyd om te kyk wie het opgelet. Daar is ‘n prys vir die grootste baars, en met díe motivering is dit ‘n wedloop na die water se kant om eerste lyn nat te maak. Twee bote staan ook reg om die kinders vir half-uur sessies uit te neem op die dam. Binne die eerste 15 minute is daar ‘n kreet langs die water. ‘n Vis is gevang. Die skaal word uitgehaal, en die vis amptelik ingeweeg op 0.640g. Nou is die peil gestel, en elke kind werk hard om ‘n groter vis te vang.

Ek is beindruk

met hierdie kinders. Hulle is almal goed gemanierd, doelgerig, en gefokus. Die dag raak lank, en die baars is lui om kunsaas te vat, maar niemand gee op nie. Hier en daar kom ‘n klein vissie uit, maar nie genoeg om die eerste vis te verbeter nie. Ek verduidelik: geen toernooi is verby totdat die laaste sand uit die uurglas geloop het nie. ‘n Wen vis kan in die laaste vyf minute van enige toernooi nog gevang word, maar geen vis kan gevang word as die kunsaas nie in die water is nie.

Die dag staan einde se kant toe, die kinders is moeg, gesiggies rooi gebrand, maar die oë glinster. Selfs die meisiekinders het ontdek, tot hul verbasing, dat dit eintlik lekker is om vis te vang. Die bote kom in. Die laaste visvang sessie het ook nou tot ‘n einde gekom. Ek sien glimlagte, breë skouers – twee visse is gevang en moet geweeg word. Hier kom ‘n ding! Die breedste glimlag dink sy vis kan aanspraak maak op die titel, hy trippel rond soos ‘n skouperd. Die skaal word uitgehaal, die vis gehak, almal hou asem op – die syfers kom tot stilstand – 1.03kg!

Ek kon die dag nie beter beplan het nie – ‘n lewensles is geleer, ervaar, en prakties uitgebeeld langs die water – AANHOUER WEN! NEVER GIVE UP! - Christie Thomas
