I know there are many of you that have not discovered the pleasure of
playing your guitar (banjo, mando, etc.) to the rhythmic tapping of a metronome. Our good friend and fellow NNBAer Laura Ashkin is a big fan of metronomes. For her it is like a great jam buddy who never makes a mistake and is always available for a little jam session. Scott Cozen says it really helps him build speed; playing first at a moderate pace then gradually increasing the tempo. I can't argue with that because Scott can really rip it up. But for many of us it is a frustrating little contraption that can't keep a rhythm no matter what tempo you are playing.

Farewell
Former NNBA Monday Night Volunteer, John Seginski
passed away in a hospital near Elko NV on March 21, 2020. He and his wife Tincia, moved to Paradise Valley, NV in 2007. John played mandolin for the Volunteers and was an active participant. He was a very talented musician and also played violin and guitar. He could play a lead on any song he heard. Tincia will stay at their home for awhile . I’m sure she would like to hear from any NNBA members who remember John. Her address is: Tincia Seginski PO Box 306 Paradise Valley, NV 89426.

The Metronome (continued from page 1)
Here is a little tip for you. Don't fight it. Try this ..... Set your
metronome to a moderate speed of 140 and play Blue Ridge
Cabin Home. This will be fairly slow. Relax! Don't try to match
the metronome. Just start playing and singing. I think that within
10 or 15 minutes you will be in time with the metronome. That
irritating tapping sound will naturally draw you into the same
tempo. This may not work the first few times but after a few
sessions you will get the hang of it....and without really trying.
Your jam buddies will thank you for your new found talent of
actually listening to what the rest of the band is doing while you
are playing a lead or singing.

PICKIN’ ON THE GIANTS The Earls Of Leicester
Live At The CMA Theater
In the late 1940’s Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, and The Foggy Mountain Boys carried Bill Monroe’s bluegrass music to bigger and higher vistas. Audiences around America and the world recognized their musicianship, song writing, and ability to entertain like no other. The Earls of Leicester were formed in 2014 with a group of “super pickers” to carry the “gospel” of Flatt and Scruggs to new audiences. Lester Flatt’s smooth and easy crooning style and signature g-runs are perfectly recreated by Shawn Camp. Shawn is a great song writer and bluegrass singer, but with the “Earls”, he has really found his calling. His voice sounds like Lester, and his rock solid guitar and g-runs take us back to the original master. Another plus is his “Lester Flatt” banter. You can be transported back in time just listening to Shawn. Taking the part of Earl Scruggs with the “Earls” is banjo great, Charlie Cushman. Charlie has studied Scruggs banjo for years and really nails down the great rolls and licks that made Earl famous. As a banjo player myself, I really love Charlie’s speed, clarity, tone and drive. Along with his banjo, Charlie picks his guitar on several Gospel numbers, just like Earl did some 50 years ago. Joining the “Earls” on stage is the son of the original Foggy Mountain Boys’ fiddler. Johnny Warren is the son of the late Paul Warren, who’s great fiddle work helped define the sound of Flatt and Scruggs. Not only is Johnny a wonderful fiddler, but the fiddle he plays was his dad’s, and a true piece of history. Taking on the role of the original Curly Seckler is the great mandolin picker, Jeff White. Curly played super mandolin for Flatt and Scruggs, but is most known for his tenor harmonies to Lester’s lead. The Foggy Mountain sound is defined by these harmonies and Jeff is excellent at carrying the high harmonies with Shawn’s leads. Jake Tullock was the Foggy Mountain bass player and was known as “Cousin Jake”. He was noted for his sense of humor and fooling around with Josh Graves to get a lot of laughs out of the audience. Barry Bales, the great bassist with Alison Krauss fills the role of Jake with the “Earls” with rock solid rhythm.

June 2020 Bluegrass Tails and Reviews
Last but certainly not least, the great dobro of Jerry Douglas fills the spot of “Uncle” Josh Graves. Most dobro players try to achieve the sounds of Josh and more lately of Jerry “Flux” Douglas. Jerry is the producer of this CD and the band is the “brain-child” of this talented musician. He tells the audiences that if you don’t like Flatt and Scruggs, “then you are in the wrong place”. The Earls of Leicester give us a great sampling of Foggy Mountain music with 18 tracks on the CD. Although all the songs can bring back pleasant memories of Flatt and Scruggs, I’ll list several of my favorites.
You’ll enjoy “Salty Dog Blues”, “Earl’s Breakdown”, “I’ll Go Stepping Too”, and “Long Journey Home”. Of course no “Earls” show would ever be complete without “I Ain’t Gonna Work Tomorrow”, “I’m Gonna sleep With One Eye Open”, “Big Black Train”, and “Rollin’ In My Sweet Baby’s Arms”. The “Earls” feature several Gospel classics with Charlie on finger picked guitar. They give us “Let The Church Roll On”, “My Mother Prays So Loud In Her Sleep”, “You Can Feel It In Your Soul”, and “Reunion In Heaven”. The Earls of Leicester work up the audience’s enthusiasm with “Flint Hill Special”and “Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down”. The “Martha White Theme Song” takes us all back to memories of Flatt and Scruggs on WSM. The “Earls” close out their show with the greatest hit, “Foggy Mountain Breakdown”.

BLUE AND TRUE True Grass Again
Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road
Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road have done it again. This CD, True Grass Again captures the essence of great bluegrass songs. Lorraine knew it was time to stick to the traditions of bluegrass, and call attention to the type of music that we all know from the first generation of pickers.
The Carolina Road band features Lorraine Jordan on mandolin/vocals, Ben Greene on banjo/vocals, Randy Graham on guitar and bass, Allen Dyer on guitar/lead vocals, and Matt Hooper on fiddle. Their songs all feature great harmonies and musicianship.
The first track on the album “True Grass”, features guests, Junior Sisk and Danny Paisley on lead vocals. These two bluegrassers are known for their love of traditional bluegrass music and have been recording artists who I have seen several times at the Grass Valley Bluegrass Festival. Just a couple months ago, these great artists joined Lorraine and the boys for a California tour. I wish I could have seen them in person. They ask the question “Why can’t bluegrass just be true grass again?” All of the songs on this album take us back to our memories of fun bluegrass tunes.
You’ll enjoy “Run Little Fox” about the chase of hound dogs, howling at the moon, and the adventures of the hunters in the hills and hollows. “Another Soldier” is a tribute to our fallen soldiers and the freedom that we all love. “Pickin’ Rock Out Of The Bluegrass” is clever song about the rocky soil of Kentucky and the loss of tradition in our music. The line “pure, high lonesome sound” reminds me of a Peter Rowan tune. High harmonies, great banjo, fiddle, and dobro fill this song with the traditions of the Fathers.
One of my favorites on the album is “Preaching Praying Singing” the old Flatt and Scruggs song. The finger picked lead guitar is “tasty”!! Another fun song is about painting a picture of a lost love, “Portrait of the Blues”. The writer says he will do a portrait “painted with the pieces of my heart”. The song “I Hear Angels Calling Your Name” is a sad song about the death of the singer’s loved one. The band closes out the CD with the familiar fiddle tune, “Cherokee Shuffle”. With a fiddle kick-off, a hot banjo response, and Lorraine’s mandolin rifts, this is a great rendition to end on.

Engelhardt Music Group has released a new single for bluegrass singer/songwriter Chris Roberts, The Way I Feel Tonight. It’s a Don Cook song that Bobby Bare recorded back in the ’70s, and Chris gives it a new flavor in his cut. Bobby did it much slower, in almost a blues vein, but when you assemble a Nashville bluegrass wrecking crew like Scott Vestal, Aubrey Haynie, Cody Kilby, Dennis Crouch, Casey Campbell, and Rob Ickes, grass is what you get. Chris is a highly entertaining vocalist, with previous experience both in country music with One Flew South in the mid-aughts, and on the Broadway stage as well. He brings a great deal to his budding career in bluegrass.

ISOLATION BLUES By Jim Lappin Are you tired of isolation and frustrated by not being able to jam with all your friends? Here’s something I’ve been doing on you tube. I have googled several of my favorite bluegrass bands and tried to hear the differ-ent musical parts (harmonies) on live recordings. I know earlier in life, all we had were records, tapes, and CD’s but not many chances to see our super groups interacting and singing together. If you try this, you might discover that you have more musical talent than you thought. I claim to have learned my harmony singing from the Stanley Brothers. A couple years ago (45 or so) I lis-tened to Carter’s lead and Ralph’s tenor singing, and often sang along with the 8-track tape. This was the way I started my bluegrass journey. Having taken a NNBA harmony class from Kristell, Cindy, and Rick (a really fun time that bears repeating), I discovered that I could easily find the tenor part to sing, but the baritone harmony was much more difficult to hear. I, however, did sing bass in youth choirs, and could sing bass parts on most bluegrass songs. I have to remember that tenor is usually 1/3 higher than lead, and baritone is 1/3 lower. Confused yet? Try You Tubing these great artists. (look for band videos—live performances) The Stanley Brothers: Duet with Carter on lead and Ralph on high tenor- “Weeping Willow” “Old Love Letters” Trio with Carter on lead , Ralph on high tenor, and George on baritone- “How Mountain Gals Can Love” “It Takes a Worried Man” Flatt & Scruggs: Trio with Lester on lead, Curly on high tenor, and Earl on baritone- “Dim Lights Thick Smoke” “Before I Met You” “Ain’t Gonna Work Tomorrow” Quartet with Lester lead, Curly tenor, Earl baritone, and Paul bass “Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down” Jim & Jesse: Duet with Jesse on lead and Jim on high tenor- “When I Stop Dreaming” “When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold” “Paradise” Trio with Jesse lead, Jim tenor, and another band member, baritone “I Wonder Where You Are Tonight” “Ole Slew Foot” “Ashes Of Love” Try a few of these videos and learn to sing the harmony parts with the “stars”.
Enjoy!

Sage Creek They are a collection of performers with experience in a broad variety
of musical genre drawn together by membership in the Northern
Nevada Bluegrass Association in Reno, Nevada. They started as two
mandolin players striving to perfect fiddle tunes but kept adding
friends to fill out the sound. As each person joined the group They
changed our focus to include sweet harmony, voicing and unique song
selections. We play a little Bluegrass . . a little Newgrass . . . a little
Folk . . . a little country . . . AND A LOT OF HARMONY.

genres. Dennis manages the website, produces flyers and keeps track of the tens-of-dollars in the band's bank
