KENNETH AND ELLEN CHESSICK PRACTICE CENTERThis fall, Northern Illinois will begin construction of the Kenneth and Ellen Chessick Practice Center, an 83,500-square foot facility which will provide a dedicated on-campus indoor practice facility for Huskie student-athletes.

The Chessick Practice Center will house a full-size, 120-yard artificial surface football practice field with buffer space surrounding the field on all sides. It will stand 65-feet tall in the center and 45-feet high at the sidelines. The building will sit in the center of NIU’s athletic foot-print on the west side of campus and will be connected to the Jeffrey and Kimberly Yordon Center by the Barsema Hall of Champions.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS FOOTBALL 2012

In his first season as head coach of the North-ern Illinois University football program, Dave Doeren and his Huskies achieved milestones rarely reached over the course of a career, let alone a single season. Doeren’s first year at the helm of a program saw NIU win the school’s first Mid-American Conference Championship since 1983, triumph in the GoDaddy.com Bowl and close out the year with nine straight victories en route to tying the school record with 11 wins. Doeren became the winningest first-year head coach in school history.

A 17-year collegiate coaching veteran who helped take teams to eight bowl games and

two national championship contests as an assistant coach at Wisconsin (2006-10), Kansas (2002-05), Montana (2000-01), USC (1998-99) and Drake (1995-97), Doeren was named the 21st head football coach in NIU history on Dec. 13, 2010.

Doeren came to NIU after completing his fifth season at Wisconsin in 2010 at the Rose Bowl where the Big Ten champion and 11-2 Badgers met TCU. After spending his first two seasons in Madison as the Badgers’ co-defensive coordinator, linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator, he added defensive coordinator duties in January 2008. During Doeren’s time at Wisconsin, the Badgers posted a 49-16 overall record and played in the Champs Sports (twice), Outback and Capital One bowls. At Wisconsin, Doeren’s defenses were consistently ranked in the top 25 in the nation; while there he coached current National Football League defenders Jonathan Casillas (Saints), De-Andre Levy (Lions) and J.J. Watt (Texans).

Doeren arrived at UW after four seasons (2002-05) at the University of Kansas. He was the linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator for three seasons at KU before being promoted to co-defensive coordinator in 2005.

Prior to his time at Kansas, Doeren coached the secondary at NCAA FCS power Montana for two seasons. Montana won the I-AA national champi-onship in 2001 and went 28-3 with two conference titles in his time there.

He started his college coaching career as an assistant at Drake from 1995-97 where he coached linebackers, before becoming defensive coordinator in 1997. A four-year letterwinner at Drake (1990-93), Doeren earned Academic All-America honors as a senior and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in pre-medical biology and a master’s in educational leadership.

KU a 45-42 victory. The contest featured 996 yards of total offense 12 touchdowns (six by each team) and 15 kickoffs. In the first meeting in 1983, NIU kicker Vince Scott booted a 26-yard field goal with eight seconds on the clock to give the Huskies a 37-34 victory.

BIG 12 BATTLES: North-ern Illinois is 4-11 all-time against teams that make up the current Big 12 Conference. NIU has

faced six Big 12 teams. In addition to the 1-1 mark versus Kansas, the Huskies are 2-4 versus Kansas State, 1-3 all-time versus Iowa State, and have a 0-1 record against Oklahoma State, West Virginia and TCU. NIU has never faced Baylor, Oklahoma, Texas, or Texas Tech.

RECENTLY: NIU raised its record to 2-1 with a hard-fought, 41-40 victory over Army at West Point last Saturday. NIU’s Jordan Lynch hit Martel Moore with an eight-yard touchdown pass with 4:19 to play for the winning score, and Boomer Mays tackled Army QB Trent Steelman for a two-yard loss on fourth-and-three with 1:47 remaining to se-cure the win.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE: With a 41-11 mark at Hus-kie Stadium since 2003, NIU has raised its all-time record in the facility to 147-97-2 for a .602 win-ning percentage all-time.

Winning Ways

NIU’s Huskie Stadium winning percentage of .788 since 2002 ranks the Huskies in the Top 20 in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

HAPPY AT HOME: NIU extended its school-record winning streak at Huskie Stadium to 16 games with its win over UT Martin. The Huskies have not lost a game in DeKalb since Sept. 26, 2009 when NIU dropped a 34-31 deci-sion to Idaho. Northern Illinois has won 12 straight Mid-Ameri-can Conference games at home,

dating to a 33-30 overtime loss to Central Michigan on Nov. 12, 2008.

STAFF TRANSITION: On Sept. 3, Northern Illinois announced that first-year of-fensive coordinator Mike Dunbar’s duties would be reassigned in order to allow him to focus on his battle with cancer. Assistant coach Rod Carey assumed game-planning and play-calling duties for the Huskie offense, which includes three coaches with backgrounds as offensive coordinators—Carey, quarterbacks coach Bob Cole and running backs coach Mike Uremovich. Joe Tripodi, a third-year graduate assistant who coaches the Huskie tight ends and fullbacks, be-comes a full-time assistant and takes on recruiting duties. Dunbar remains on staff and will attend practices and meetings when he can.

SON OF THE SUNFLOWER STATE: For the second straight season, Northern Il-linois Head Coach Dave Doeren leads his Huskies against his home state school, as well as the school where he previously coached. Doeren served as lineback-ers coach and recruiting coordinator at KU from 2002-04 under head coach Mark Mangino, and added co-defensive coordinator duties in 2005. Doeren’s ties to the state go even deeper as he grew up in the Kansas City suburbs and attended Bishop Miege High School in Shawnee Mission.

FAVORITE SON: The Huskie coaching staff features a KU fan favorite in lineback-ers coach Kevin Kane, who played linebacker for the Jayhawks, and Dave Doeren, for four years (2002-05) before beginning his coaching career as a student as-sistant at KU in 2006 and ’07. Kane, a Rockhurst High School (Kansas City) prod-uct, is fondly remembered for his interception return for a touchdown versus Ne-braska in 2005 that helped the Jayhawks’ break Nebraska’s 36-game series winning streak. He won the Nolan Cromwell Award for Leadership as a junior and served as a team captain his senior season.

WAYWARD SONS?: The Hus-kie roster includes four Kansas natives - tight end Luke Eakes (St. Marys), offensive lineman Logan Pegram (Silver Lake), linebacker Boomer Mays (Law-rence) and defensive end Matthew Baltimore (Overland Park) - and three more players from the Kansas City area with Missouri addresses in defensive end Donovan Gordon and line-backer Videl Nelson (Kansas City), and defensive end Joe Windsor (Kearney). Eakes, who won 14 letters in five sports at

THE LAST TIME (Sept. 10, 2011) Kansas’ D.J. Brashears caught a six-yard pass from Jordan Webb and nudged across the goal line in front of two Northern Illinois defenders with nine second to play, giving the Jayhawks a 45-42 victory at Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kansas.

Northern Illinois got an outstanding performance from the Huskie offense, led by quarterback Chandler Harnish who threw for two scores and ran for three. He com-pleted 27-of-33 passes for 315 yards and gained 89 yards on 11 carries. His favorite target was Nathan Palmer, who made a career-best nine catches for 86 yards.

Tailback Jasmin Hopkins (47 yards on 13 carries) gave the Huskies a 42-38 lead with 5:03 left in the game on a one-yard run that completed an 11-play, 85-yard drive.

A 51-yard kickoff return by Brashears put KU into Huskie territory to start its final drive. Kansas converted twice on fourth down, including on the final play.

Kansas finished the game with 32 first downs and 534 yards of total offense on 90 plays, while converting 13-of-18 third downs. Webb, who finished the game 21-of-30 for 281 yards and three TDs, found a wide open Kale Pick for a 36-yard scoring strike with 17 seconds left in the half to tie the game at 21 at halftime.

KANSAS JC CONNECTION: The Huskies’ roster includes two seniors who played junior college football in Kansas in tailback Jamal Womble, and defensive back Demetrius Stone. Womble, a second-year Huskie who came to NIU from Hutchin-son CC is part of the running back corps, while Stone has spent three seasons at Northern Illinois after playing one year at Coffeyville CC. Stone has 13 tackles and a pass break-up on the season.

QUICK STUDY: In just his third career start, NIU quarterback Jordan Lynch (Chica-go, Ill.) added his name to the Huskie record books by passing for 342 yards - the seventh-most in school history - and rushing for 125 to total 467 all-purpose yards - the third-most all-time. Lynch was named the MAC West Offensive Player of the Week after completing 18-of-27 passes for four touchdowns. His 125 rushing yards on 13 carries included an 88-yard touchdown run. Lynch threw the game-winning touchdown pass to Martel Moore with 4:19 to play and also threw a career-long 69-yard touch-down pass to Tom-mylee Lewis.

LINEBACKER, TAIL-BACK, QUARTER-BACK: Quarterback Jordan Lynch, who Dave Doeren described in the preseason as “a linebacker” playing quarterback, has run like a tailback in 2012 with a pair of 100-yard rushing games and five rushing touchdowns. Versus Iowa, Lynch gained 119 yards on 18 carries, highlighted by a 73-yard touchdown run. At Army, Lynch went for 125 yards on 13 carries with an 88-yard score to average 9.6 yards per rush. Lynch now has four career 100-yard rushing games.

TRIPLE THREAT: NIU’s Jordan Lynch goes into the Kansas game ranked in the Top 30 in the NCAA in four different categories.

SIDELINE TO SIDELINE: Huskie senior linebacker Tyrone Clark made a team-high 17 tackles Saturday at Army with 10 solo stops and three tackles for loss. Clark’s 17 tackles are the most by a Huskie player since Tim McCarthy had 17 tackles versus Ball State on Oct. 29, 2005. The last player to make more than 17 tackles in a game was Brian Atkinson, who had 22 stops versus Eastern Michigan on Nov. 20, 2004. Clark leads NIU with 19 solo stops and is second in tackles for loss with four and in total tackles with 31.

STILL SPECTACULAR: In many way, NIU receiver Martel Moore (San Antonio, Tex-as) was the difference in the Huskies’ win over Army as he caught seven passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner with 4:19 to play. Moore and Lynch connected five times for 93 yards in the second half, and he caught passes of 27, 28 and eight yards on the final drive. The senior recorded his fifth career 100-yard receiving day.

SeniorityNorthern Illinois’ 16-man senior class includes only two players (Logan Pegram, Victor Jacques) originally signed as scholarship players in 2008 and includes just six fifth-year players. The seniors entered 2012 with 29 career wins (2009-11) and now need five victories to break the 2011 seniors’ mark of 35 wins to become the winningest class in NIU football history.

ONLY WAY TO GET IT: Northern Illinois went into the season opener versus Iowa with the least experi-enced offensive line in the country as every player in the Huskies’ front five made his first career start at Sol-dier Field. Versus Iowa, NIU lined up with center Andrew Ness, guards Aidan Conlon and Tyler Pitt and tackles Matt Krempel and Tyler Loos. Since that game, NIU has

welcomed guard Jared Volk back from an offseason knee injury. He started two games a year ago and has stepped into the starting five, while Ryan Brown has started the last two games at tackle in place of Krempel.

NARROW MARGINS: Over the last two seasons, more than half - nine - of North-ern Illinois’ 17 games have been decided by seven points or less, including two one-point games in 2012. NIU is 6-3 overall in the close games, with six wins in its last seven close contests. This year, the Huskies are 1-1 in one-point games, falling 18-17 versus Iowa and winning 41-40 at Army.

NIU and Stanford are the only teams whose 11-win seasons came under different head coaches.

WATCH LISTER: For the second consecutive season, Huskie DE Sean Progar was named to the preseason watch list for the Rotary Lombardi Award, presented to the nation’s top lineman/linebacker. NIU’s most experienced returning player with 37 starts in 43 career games, Progar has 135 tackles, 29.5 tackles for loss and 15.5 quarterback sacks in his NIU career.

CHICAGO - Iowa scored its only touchdown of the game on a 23-yard run by Damon Bullock with 2:15 to play, lifting the Hawkeyes to an 18-17 victory over Northern Illinois in front of a crowd of 52,117 at Soldier Field.

Northern Illinois used the running of first-time starting quarterback Jordan Lynch and a stifling defensive effort to build a 17-9 lead with 9:43 to play in the third quarter. Lynch finished with 119 yards on 18 carries, and the NIU defense came up with six sacks for 57 yards, but the Huskies fell just short of extend-ing its nine-game win streak.

The Huskie defense held Iowa to 268 yards and sacked the Hawkeyes’ quar-terback six times, led by Joe Windsor with two.

Trailing by five, 17-12, Iowa pinned the Huskies back on their own 1-yard line on a John Wienke punt. On the ensuing possession, the Huskies failed to gain any yardage, forcing Ryan Neir to punt the ball back to Iowa from the back of his own end zone. Neir’s punt was returned by Micah Hyde 11 yards to the NIU 24 with 3:41 remaining.

After picking up just one yard on the first two plays, Bullock found a hole off left-tackle and raced to the end zone, giving the Hawkeyes their only lead of the game. He finished the contest with 150 yards on 30 carries.

Iowa opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 34-yard field goal from Mike Meyer on the game’s opening drive. The Hawkeyes covered 14 plays and 58 yards before stalling in Huskie territory.

The Huskies drove into Hawkeye territory and were knocking on the door of the end zone as the first quarter came to a close. With his first collegiate carry on the first play of the second quarter, freshman running back Keith Harris Jr. scored on a seven-yard run, giving NIU a 7-3 lead.

Iowa trimmed the NIU lead to one, 7-6, on a 29-yard field goal by Meyer with 4:23 to play in the second quarter after a drive stalled at the NIU 11-yard line.Meyer finished the day four-of-five on field goal attempts.

The Huskies responded with a field goal of their own as Mathew Sims split the uprights from 28 yards to give NIU a 10-6 lead heading into the intermission.

The Hawkeyes forced the only turnover of the contest to open the second half as Lynch fumbled and Carl Davis recovered for Iowa on the NIU 14. Iowa had first-and-goal from the Huskie three but was turned back by the NIU defense, forcing a 22-yard Meyer field goal to trim the Huskie advantage to 10-9.

Lynch and the Huskies answered when the quarterback broke into the open and went 73 yards for a score, giving NIU a 17-9 lead.

On its first drive of the fourth quarter, Iowa again reached Huskie territory, advancing to the 26-yard line before a sack forced Meyer to attempt a 50-yard field goal, which he made to cut the UI deficit to 17-12.

Team & Individual Statistics

DeKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch and running back Leighton Settle powered the Huskies (1-1) to a 35-7 win over UT Martin Sat-urday night at Huskie Stadium. The duo combined for 166 rushing yards on 32 carries for three touchdowns as both averaged over five yards per carry against the Skyhawks (1-1) for NIU’s first win of 2012.

After a tough loss at Soldier Field against Iowa last weekend, Lynch and the Huskies put on an impressive display in front of the home crowd as NIU won its 16th straight game at Huskie Stadium, dating back to 2009.

Lynch put together his best career passing day, establishing career highs of 19 completions, 25 attempts and 214 yards. The redshirt junior threw for a TD as well, connecting on a 31-yard pass down the middle to senior wide receiver Martel Moore to put NIU up 14-0 with 14:55 left in the second quarter after forcing the Skyhawks into a three-and-out. The only blemish on the day was his first career interception. Lynch also added 60 yards on 11 carries on the ground, and finished with three rushing scores.

Despite three Lynch TDs, the ground attack was anchored by Settle, who rushed 21 times for 106 yards to notch his first career 100-yard game.

The Huskie defense made several key stops and plays to hold UTM to just one touchdown, which came early in the fourth quarter. The first big stand came after a 13-play, 66-yard drive that took over five minutes of clock time in the first quarter. The Skyhawks worked the ball to the Huskie nine-yard line, but NIU’s defense stood tall forcing a 21-yard field goal attempt by Cody Sandlin that sailed wide right.

The second impactful play for the defense came after Lynch’s interception. The Skyhawks drove to the NIU redzone again and had first-and-goal from the NIU 10-yard line. Once again, the Huskies forced another short field goal. This time, the UTM snap for a 27-yard field was botched and Tyrone Clark recovered.

Lynch then guided the Huskies on a 15-play, 83-yard drive that lasted over 5:30 and scored on a one-yard run. The score put NIU ahead 21-0 with 3:51 left in the first half, and the Huskies didn’t look back.

In the second half, Lynch added a pair of rushing scores - breaking free on a 32-yard run up the middle and powering for a four-yard score.

Defensively, safety Jimmie Ward led NIU with 10 tackles, two pass break-ups and an interception, the Huskies’ first of the season. Northern Illinois held UTM to 63 rushing yards on 33 attempts. UTM receiver Quentin Sims caught 10 passes for 152 yards in the game, but was held to 46 receiving yards on five catches in the second half.

West Point, N.Y. - The Northern Illinois defense made the stop it needed to make when freshman linebacker Boomer Mays tackled Army quarterback Trent Steelman for a two-yard loss on fourth and three with 1:47 to play, securing the Huskies’ 41-40 victory over the Black Knights at MIchie Stadium.

Mays’ stop came after NIU took the lead with 4:29 in the game on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Lynch to Martel Moore. The touchdown pass was one of four on the day for Lynch, who threw for a career-high 342 yards on 18-of-27 passing and added 125 rushing yards on 13 carries.

Moore finished with seven catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns and Tommylee Lewis scored on a 69-yard touchdown as well as a 21-yard run.

The Northern Illinois defense struggled to stop a potent Army rushing attack as the Black Knights ran for 486 rushing yards on 86 carries and six touch-downs. Three players – Raymond Maples, Larry Dixon and Trent Steelman ran for more than 100 yards each as they tallied 159, 136 and 116 yards, respectively.

Army scored on its first possession as Maples ran for a 22-yard touchdown, before the Huskies answered with an eight-play, 70-yard drive. Lynch lofted a pass to 6-8 Tim Semisch in the back of the end zone for NIU’s first score.

NIU collected the next two touchdowns to take a 21-7 lead. Lynch got a block on the edge and ran 88 yards. After the Huskie defense stopped Army on fourth and seven on the NIU 38, Northern Illinois needed just three plays to score again as Lewis scored on the end-around.

After Army responded with the first of Dixon’s three TDs, NIU used its quick strike offense again with Lynch hitting Lewis for 69 yards and a 28-13 Huskie lead. Army closed the gap to 28-19 just before halftime.

On its first possession of the second half, Army ground out an eight-play, 68-yard scoring drive. Steelman scored on a 25-yard rush and the PAT narrowed the Huskies’ lead to 28-26. NIU then drove to the Army four-yard line, but when Lynch appeared to reach the ball over the goal line, it was called a fumble in the end zone and Army took over on the NIU 20.

Army took advantage, once again pounding out a 12-play, 80-yard drive ex-clusively on the ground. Dixon scored again and when Steelman’s two-point conversion attempt was true, the Huskies trailed 34-28.

Two possessions later, the Huskies responded when Lynch connected with Moore on a 31-yard fade. After Sims’ PAT, NIU led 35-34.

Army was forced to punt, but Lynch fumbled on a handoff and Army recovered at the Huskie 15-yard line. One play later, Steelman ran in for the score and the Black Knights took a 40-35 lead with 8:55 to play.
