Transcript of NORTHERN ARIZONA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF …...Tara Steadman Justin Dodd Welcome New Students!...
Message from the Executive Director:
Welcome to the 2014 edition of the Annual Yield. It
seems increasingly rare that academic units such as
schools and departments do their own yearbooks, but I
think it is a valuable service to our students and a great
way to record some of the School of Forestry’s history.
After a hiatus of a decade or so, we brought back the
Annual Yield in 2009 and have kept it going ever since,
thanks in particular to our dedicated student services
team. This year, special thanks go to Susan Bierer, our
Student Services Coordinator, and Stephanie Polk,
Susan’s student assistant. This is the third yearbook that
Stephanie has helped with but, sadly, also the last.
Stephanie is graduating this year and moving on. She has been a great person to have
on our team and I will miss her cheerful and competent presence, as will many other
faculty, staff, and students.
It’s getting to be almost routine to convey certain types of good news in this message,
such as the success of our Forestry Club/Student Chapter of the SAF. For the second
time in a row and the third time in four years, this group has won the SAF’s
Outstanding Student Chapter award! It’s certainly no accident that this happened since
the chapter continues to be extremely active in all kinds of ways. One type of activity
that I haven’t emphasized much in past messages is the community service that our
students, staff and faculty perform, be it through the SAF Student Chapter, one of the
other student organizations, or as individuals. You can check out the pages on Kids for
Conservation, Science in the Park, and the Bud Tank Cleanup for good examples of
this type of activity.
When I glance through the pages of this and past yearbooks, I can’t help but feel
extremely privileged to serve as the School of Forestry’s Executive Director. During
April of 2013, when we hosted the SAF re-accreditation team for their site visit, one of
the team member’s parting words to me was that “you have a good thing going here.”
While we are always looking for ways to improve, I can’t help but agree with this
assessment!

Kay & Irene Hafen
This page is dedicated to the memory of Mr. Kay Hafen,
who passed away in December of 2013. Kay, along with
his wife Irene, have been great supporters of our school
and its students. Among many other things, they
established the Kay R. and Irene S. Hafen Forestry
Scholarship in 2000.
Nine scholarships totaling $23,000 ($3,000 to five
Graduate students and $2,000 to four Undergraduates)
are awarded to support student in their Junior, Senior or
Graduate years of studies. Preference is given to
students showing promise of significant forestry
contributions after graduation, who exhibit leadership
qualities, and have ability to interact positively with
students, faculty members, and the community.
Kay helped our school in so many ways over the years, including hiring our students for summer
jobs and establishing the scholarship in his and Irene’s name. I always enjoyed my visits with Kay at
his and Irene’s property in Munds Park, where I could see all the good work our students did over
the years. Kay was a true gentleman and a great supporter of education. He is sorely missed.
