Administrative Guidelines for Tobacco Use on NTC District Premises These guidelines are part of Northcentral Technical Collegersquos commitment in promoting the safety and health of its staff students visitors and general public It also establishes parameters for those who choose to smoke or use smokeless tobacco products

It is the guideline of the Northcentral Technical College District that smoking or use of smokeless tobacco products by employees students and visitors is prohibited on all District premises with the exception of three designated smoking shelters on the Central Campus in Wausau Regional campuses and

the Campus Farm do not have smoking shelters they have designated smoking areas This applies to all campus property and parking lots

At the Wausau Campus smoking and or use of smokeless tobacco products is restricted to the smoking shelters located in the Courtyard on the Northwest corner of the Center for Health Science Building and adjacent to the gated entrance to the H Building

Repeat Violations will result in code of conduct violations or monetary fines

Classroom DemeanorThe classroom or class website is an environment where students are free to learn express and share their opinions A sense of community is formed by promoting cooperation among students while celebrating the diversity of talents experiences and beliefs Upon achieving this type of community an environment conducive to learning and academic success is created Students will be expected to promote the sense of community and learning environment If students fail to work on achieving this sense of community and learning environment they will be asked to leave the class If asked to leave the student will be required to meet with the instructor on a

one ndash on ndashone basis If after this conversation there are still behaviors in conducive to the sense of community and learning a follow-up meeting will occur with the Deanrsquos Office

AttendanceAs an adult learner you most likely have multiple roles and commitments to juggle In addition to being a student you may be an employee a parent a community leader or a caregiver to a family member As your teacher I too have many responsibilities and multiple roles Therefore we need to work together to accomplish the intended learning outcomes for this course

Responsible attendance whether in the classroom or on-line means that you will plan your schedule so that you can manage your time so that you can complete your assignmentsassessments on or before the date they are due However regardless of how organized we think we are unexpected emergencies do happen All scheduled assignments must be submitted before absence or by an agreed upon date between you and the instructor

Studentrsquos amp Instructorrsquos Responsibility for Learning in an Online ClassIn a web-enhanced learn your way or completely online course we try to give you one of the main benefits of the classroom which is the opportunity to discuss with and learn from your classmates This classroom allows us to engage in discussions through a Discussion Board In this course you will be required to enter into discussions by posting your comments on questions and then responding to what your classmates have said These discussions will take place over a period of each learning plan so you dont have to be online at a specific time Sometimes learners make the assumption that an online course is easier than taking the same course in the classroom On the contrary depending on your learning style online courses can be much more demanding and time consuming primarily because of the format In an online course you are responsible for reading the text and doing the assessments This can be very time consuming and I estimate that it will take you an average of about 8 hours per week to read the information and work through the applications I am available by e-mail or chat for help so please feel free to ask questions to make sure you understand the content I will respond to e-mails within 24 hours during the week and 48 hours on the weekend I grade PATs and Discussion Board following the due dates for the assessments I will do my best to help you succeed in learning the material

Performance Based AssessmentThis is a performance based course meaning that you are required to demonstrate understanding and successfully complete assessments of the eight competencies described above The successful completion of these competencies is separate from your letter grade for this course The letter grade assessment plan is listed on the following page Failure to demonstrate understanding of any competency will result in an F for the course regardless of points earned Successful completion will be noted on the Blackboard Gradebook as well as the grading matrices returned with the Performance Assessment Tasks and the Final Assessment The final assessment covers all of the competencies which must be successfully achieved to pass the course

Performance Assessment TasksYou are responsible for completing four Performance Assessment Tasks that are presented during the semester (possible 40 points each) These assessment tasks are are short papers that involve further research The tasks will be tied to the field of social problems as it relates to the competencies and readings presented within the course (160 points)

LP Quizzes Study GuidesThe class blackboard website has an opportunity for you to assess your comprehension of each chapter At the completion of each learning plan you will need to have completed the ten question assessment The assessment is located under the Learning Plans button on the Blackboard Menu (left side of the Course Blackboard Page) This assignment will be graded on your score and are due on Sundays at 1159 PM For each learning plan you complete your score points will be awarded (70 points)

Discussion Board ParticipationYou are responsible for completing discussions for LP 13 and 5 Initial postings (20 points each) are due on Sundays at 1159 PM In addition you are responsible for participating in class discussions regarding each of the discussion topics (possible 5 points each) These response postings are due on the following Sundays at 1159 PM Each discussion is worth 25 points more information is located on the learning plan page (75 points)

Final AssessmentAt the conclusion of the semester you will complete four essays each worth 25 points These essays will cover course material in respect to the competencies and objectives for the course (100 points)

LP Quizzes Study GuidesThe class blackboard website has an opportunity for you to assess your comprehension of each chapter At the completion of each learning plan you will need to have completed the ten question assessment The assessment is located under the Learning Plans button on the Blackboard Menu (left side of the Course Blackboard Page) This assignment will be graded on your score and are due on Sundays at 1159 PM For each learning plan you complete your score points will be awarded (70 points)

Administrative Guidelines for Tobacco Use on NTC District Premises These guidelines are part of Northcentral Technical Collegersquos commitment in promoting the safety and health of its staff students visitors and general public It also establishes parameters for those who choose to smoke or use smokeless tobacco products

It is the guideline of the Northcentral Technical College District that smoking or use of smokeless tobacco products by employees students and visitors is prohibited on all District premises with the exception of three designated smoking shelters on the Central Campus in Wausau Regional campuses and

the Campus Farm do not have smoking shelters they have designated smoking areas This applies to all campus property and parking lots

At the Wausau Campus smoking and or use of smokeless tobacco products is restricted to the smoking shelters located in the Courtyard on the Northwest corner of the Center for Health Science Building and adjacent to the gated entrance to the H Building

Repeat Violations will result in code of conduct violations or monetary fines

Classroom DemeanorThe classroom or class website is an environment where students are free to learn express and share their opinions A sense of community is formed by promoting cooperation among students while celebrating the diversity of talents experiences and beliefs Upon achieving this type of community an environment conducive to learning and academic success is created Students will be expected to promote the sense of community and learning environment If students fail to work on achieving this sense of community and learning environment they will be asked to leave the class If asked to leave the student will be required to meet with the instructor on a

Performance-based Instruction This is a performance-based course It is designed around 8 competencies You will be required to show me the learning by demonstrating your skills Your grade will be based on your performance of those competencies according to the criteria outlined in your learning plans

Course Competencies Competencies are what learners will be able to do as a result of the learning experience Competencies are about doing not about knowing Course competencies specify what learners will be able to do after successfully completing the course In this course the competencies that you must master at a C or are

bull Analyze social problems from a sociological perspective

bull Explain and identify how social problems are socially constructed

bull Analyze the interrelationship between social problems and the major social institutions in society

bull Analyze how social problems are reinforced and preserved by social groups who maintain wealth and power

bull Formulate potential solutions for social problems using a systematic and empirical approach

bull Analyze how attitudes towards human differences are interrelated to the problems of inequality

bull Analyze how crime and deviance are socially constructed

bull Examine the impact of poverty on life chances

Performance Based AssessmentThis is a performance based course meaning that you are required to demonstrate understanding and successfully complete assessments of the eight competencies described above The successful completion of these competencies is separate from your letter grade for this course The letter grade assessment plan is listed on the following page Failure to demonstrate understanding of any competency will result in an F for the course regardless of points earned Successful completion will be noted on the Blackboard Gradebook as well as the grading matrices returned with the Performance Assessment Tasks and the Final Assessment The final assessment covers all of the competencies which must be successfully achieved to pass the course

Performance Assessment TasksYou are responsible for completing four Performance Assessment Tasks that are presented during the semester (possible 40 points each) These assessment tasks are are short papers that involve further research The tasks will be tied to the field of social problems as it relates to the competencies and readings presented within the course (160 points)

LP Quizzes Study GuidesThe class blackboard website has an opportunity for you to assess your comprehension of each chapter At the completion of each learning plan you will need to have completed the ten question assessment The assessment is located under the Learning Plans button on the Blackboard Menu (left side of the Course Blackboard Page) This assignment will be graded on your score and are due on Sundays at 1159 PM For each learning plan you complete your score points will be awarded (70 points)

Discussion Board ParticipationYou are responsible for completing discussions for LP 13 and 5 Initial postings (20 points each) are due on Sundays at 1159 PM In addition you are responsible for participating in class discussions regarding each of the discussion topics (possible 5 points each) These response postings are due on the following Sundays at 1159 PM Each discussion is worth 25 points more information is located on the learning plan page (75 points)

Final AssessmentAt the conclusion of the semester you will complete four essays each worth 25 points These essays will cover course material in respect to the competencies and objectives for the course (100 points)
