Northbrook Book Club All are invited to the lively Northbrook Book Club discussions. On Monday, October 9, we will be discussing X: A Novel by Ilyasah Shabazz in the Library at 7:00 p.m. Co-written by Malcolm X’s daughter, this riveting and revealing novel follows the formative years of the man whose words and actions shook the world. Malcolm Little’s parents have always told him that he can achieve anything, but from what he can tell, that’s a pack of lies. After all, his father had been murdered, his mother had been taken away, and his dreams of becoming a lawyer had gotten him laughed out of school. There’s no point in trying, he figures, and lured by the nightlife of Boston and New York, he escapes into a world of fancy suits, jazz, girls and reefer.

But Malcolm’s efforts to leave the past behind lead him into increasingly dangerous territory. Deep down, he knows that the freedom he’s found is only an illusion, and that he can’t run forever. X: A Novel follows Malcolm from his childhood to his imprisonment for theft at age twenty when he found the faith that would lead him to forge a new path and command a voice that still resonates today. Mark your calendar for other upcoming Book Club dates: November 20, 2017 (A Fall of Marigolds by Susan Meissner) and January 8, 2018, February 12, 2018 and March 26, 1018.

Max Van de Vyver and his family are holding a Shoe Drive for the organization Soles 4 Souls and have invited Northbrook to be a part of this incredible effort. Five year old Max did a geography project this past spring on Kenya and learned so much about the culture and people. He then had the opportunity to hear the Ugandan Kids Choir perform at Northbrook! He learned that not all kids are afforded the same privileges,

safety, education and care that he has.

Max was inspired to organize the shoe drive for Soles 4 Souls, an organization that distributes shoes to impoverished countries around the world, including America. The Shoe Drive goal is to collect 50,000 pairs of gently used shoes. This is no small task, and they will be partnering with many organizations, schools and businesses to collect shoes for the entire school year.

If you have a pair of gently used shoes, any size, color, children's, men’s or women’s that you are willing to part with, please leave them in the box in the main hallway, or email [email protected] for more information. Thank you so very much for donating your gently used shoes and helping Max reach his goal!

Have You ever Witnessed a Social Injustice and Didn't Know What to Do or How to Make a Difference?

The Office of Public Witness of the Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA) will be addressing this topic at a Presbytery of Detroit event. If you would like to attend the Advocacy in Action Workshop on Faithful Advocacy, see or contact Winnie Davies-Hancock at [email protected] or (248)593-8035. This workshop is being sponsored by the Planning and Visioning Great Ends of the Church Work Group and the Social Justice Ministry Team. On Monday, September 25, the Rev. Jimmie R. Hawkins, Director of the Office of Public Witness, PCUSA will join us for dinner at 5:30 p.m. and then share his knowledge and expertise with us. The event will be held at Calvary Presbyterian Church located at 19125 Greenview Avenue in Detroit.

The Presbytery of Detroit’s Hands-on-Mission Team: Baton Rouge Mission Trip Dubbed the “Storm With No Name”, relentless rainfall in August 2016 flooded Central Louisiana up to 10 feet deep in places. 150,000 homes were devastated and many thousands of people remain in temporary or unsafe housing conditions. Rebuilding Together - Baton Rouge will match our volunteer abilities to homeowners’ needs. Construction skills are valued but not necessary. Accommodations will be at University Presbyterian Church in Baton Rouge (Sunday to Saturday), and will include real bunk beds, sheets, pillows and towels. The group will stay overnight at First Presbyterian Church in Nashville on the way down and back (pslfloodrecovery.com/baton-rouge-hub). Departure: Saturday, November 11 morning (then overnight in Nashville) Return: Sunday, November 19 evening (after overnighting again in Nashville). Cost: $200 per person including all lodging and meals while in Baton Rouge. There will be car pooling. Gas, travel, food and any personal expenses for the week are additional. Space is limited to 20 volunteers. Sign up now for the “Am probably going” list by contacting Tom Duffield at (248)930-4524 or [email protected]. You can register online by going to www.hands-on-mission.org and then click on “Project.” For questions, contact Winnie Davies-Hancock at (248)593-8035 or at [email protected].

Calling all Knitters and Crochet Devotees! We invite you to join us and remind everyone of our schedule change that took place in the late springtime and has proved very successful. We will meet each month on the 4th Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. We usually work until about 3:00, but you are welcome to participate whenever your schedule permits, so do not worry about arriving late or leaving early! We have supplies of yarn and needles for you to use if you are learning, and we can also provide instruction! The best thing is the friendship and camaraderie that develops. For those who have been away for the summer, we have missed you and look forward to your return. If you need project suggestions, we are always looking for items that will be popular for our Alternative Gift Market in November! We have some small, fun ideas to make. Also, our yarn cupboard will soon be moved to the Youth House during the renovation of Fellowship Hall. We will still have access, just not quite as convenient.

Ugandan Kids Choir—What an Experience! The visit by the Ugandan Kids Choir at the end of July was truly a special time for our church! The choir, made up of 10 kids (8-12) and 3 adult leaders, were hosted by Allison and Matt Broadwell, Tricia and Frank Lasota, and Nancy Best and I at our homes. We thought you would enjoy some of the highlights of their time with us.

The choir had a busy time with us. It started on Friday with two performances at the Detroit Zoo. What energy as they drew in crowds with their dancing and singing! During their off-stage dancing performance, they pulled in Claire Lasota and Owen Hurbis to all of the fun. This was a great way to start their visit.

Friday night, we hosted the choir at the United Shores Professional Baseball game at Jimmy John's field in Utica. We found out from Alexis Sullivan, the tour leader, the kids had never been to a baseball game. The night did not disappoint for both the kids and adults. The choir hung out by one of the dugouts, and the teams chatted with them throughout the game and gave them 10 baseballs as souvenirs. More firsts for them was enjoying "dippin dots" ice cream and cotton candy!

Marjorie and Jeff Wilhelmi hosted us at Sylvan Lake on Saturday for a day enjoying the beautiful Michigan summer weather. The choir loved playing in the water. "Uncle" Jeff took us on boat rides, and some of us were treated to the kids singing on the boat. (Aunt and Uncle are used as a sign of respect in Uganda and that's what they called us!) Not to be missed was the "Little Library" at the beach. All of the kids loved to read whatever books they could find.

Finally, Sunday came, and we could not imagine the beautiful and energetic concert the Ugandan Kids Choir gave at our church! Where do these kids find such energy, enthusiasm and love for Jesus? They perform 3 to 4 times a week, and it seemed like a very special performance for Northbrook and our guests.

Tricia and Frank Lasota, with the help of Claire, hosted Caroline, Desire, Elizabeth and Ivan (Music Director) at their home. The girls loved helping in the kitchen, reading, biking and swimming at the house. A special treat was Ivan playing on the piano and singing throughout the stay. Allison and Matt Broadwell hosted Julius, Davis and Ronald and tour leader, Alexis. The time was packed with playing games including Sorry, dressing up in Halloween costumes and fishing. Ronald wore Allison's lucky hat along with a clown nose and won most of the games. Finally, Deborah, Elias, Sentrina, Jordan and A.J. (administrative leader) stayed at my house with co-host Nancy Best. They loved being outside, and Elias and Jordan could be found riding a bike around the yard. It was hard to get them to sleep the first night! Between spaghetti and taco dinners, they read, colored, played on our iPhones and iPads, but had the most fun playing Left, Right, Center which Aunt Nancy taught them.

This time could not have been possible without the love and help of so many. Thank you to Marjorie and Jeff Wilhelmi, Allison and Matt Broadwell, Frank, Tricia and Claire Lasota, and Nancy Best for hosting; Becky Bachand for giving us office and technological support; Sherrill Heinrich for stepping in the week of the visit and finding much needed replacement choir items and the church members who donated them; Bill Jordan and Dave Vander Weide who provided visual and audio technical support during the Sunday performance; and the Congregational Life Committee for providing a very special coffee hour. With your support, we raised over $3600 for the choir and its tour and sponsored 10 children! This is Living the Love of Jesus Christ everyday! Each of you has earned the title, "Aunt" or "Uncle" because of your support and love for the Ugandan Kids Choir and their tour leaders.

Thank you again, Peggie Schiller

Happy Birthday!

Northbrook Rose Some more smiles for our senior citizen members. You young readers will grow older too. Just be patient.

You do not have a bed time. You can afford to order a good wine at dinner. You can throw away your fake ID. No more car pools. Your arthritis makes you less likely to lose your wedding ring. You might get a seat on a crowded bus. A handicap sticker on your visor gives you free parking. You do not have to walk from check in to the plane, (love this ride). No more dead gold fish to flush. Old men who date "young" women are wealthy. No one tells you to Grow Up.

Blessings from my house to your house, Rose

For the most up-to-date calendar information, visit our website at www.northbrookpc.org

We welcome another school year! In September, the 2 and 3 year olds will be adjusting and the 4 year olds will be learning about insects. All of our pictures will be on the wall so please stop by to check out our beautiful smiles. The most unique thing about our school is that the children are not restricted to one room and have the opportunity to freely move into all of our three rooms: the art room, block room and quiet room.

In this way, we offer the children many options so they may choose activities that promote their intellectual, social and emotional growth while meeting their own unique interests. We have a few openings left, so be sure to tell your friends and neighbors about our wonderful school! Visit us at www.northbrookpreschool.com or call (248)642-0200, ext. 16.
