Dr. Taylor’s list of credentials and achievements is extensive. From knowing him personally, I can tell you he is an outstanding musician, a wonderfully warm human being and a devoted Christian. Seminary Education Fund

Northbrook is called to continue God’s work in the Presbyterian Church (USA). One of the many ways available to us is to nurture and support candidates for professional Presbyterian (PCUSA) ministry. Towards that end, the Session, at their July 17, 2012 meeting, approved a motion “to establish a Seminary Education Fund (SEF) to judiciously award non-interest forgivable loans to candidate members of Northbrook who are engaged in formal preparation leading to the successful completion of their seminary education and entrance to the professional ministry in the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA)”. Unsuccessful completion would result in the requirement of loan re-payment.

What this means is that interested and concerned members of Northbrook can collectively offer financial support to qualified member candidates attending a seminary accredited by the PC (USA). Supportive funds for the seminary student(s) would come entirely from gifts so designated to the Seminary Education Fund and not from general funds. The process will be formalized by a semester-by-semester Assessment of Financial Need form and then a contractual Loan Agreement. Available funds on hand in the Seminary Education Fund (SEF) would be lent according to any and all approved financial need forms received for a given semester.

Northbrook is fortunate that a generous anonymous family has stepped forward and has provided seed money to get the SEF program started.

Here is how this program will work. Northbrook will publish the availability of the Seminary Education Fund (SEF) to members of the Northbrook congregation. Any current Northbrook member who is dedicated in the pursuit of seminary education leading to ministry in the PC (USA) will then be eligible to apply for a forgivable SEF loan. They will then need to contact the Finance Committee to learn more specifics about the program and how the SEF may assist them in their Seminary goals. Applicant(s)

I come to you as your Finance and Stewardship Chair to talk about estate planning. That’s correct, planning the future disposition of your family assets after you are gone. Statistics show that more than half of us do not have wills. Prepare a will so that your wishes will be carried out and your heirs will not have that extra burden to deal with.

What are your wishes? Surely you want to leave assets to your children or grandchildren if you have them. As Finance Chair and the current person responsible for the solvency and future stability of our Northbrook, I ask that you also consider leaving something for our church and the future of our denomination as your legacy and witness to your Christian living. You already have given time and talent as well as money to pay the mortgage, the yearly operating fund, the Building Endowment Fund and others. Now, in addition you might wish to make a final but continuing impact on keeping your church home where you have been nourished and supported, as viable and steady as it is today through mentioning Northbrook in your will.

Consider leaving Northbrook some fraction or amount of your wealth. Know that your bequest will be wisely and conscientiously used as directed in your will.

Bill Travis Finance & Stewardship Chair

will then complete the Assessment of Financial Need form by January 15 or July 15 of each year. The Northbrook congregation will then be advised of the applicant’s SEF submission. Anyone who is interested may contribute to the Seminary Education Fund for the student’s seminary education support. In this way Northbrook can collectively continue God’s work in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and support the future of our professional Ministry and the values that we believe in.

I thank you for your consideration.

importantly, we have faith. I am privileged to serve with Margaret Babb, Megan Bauhof, Nancy Gifford (Elder), Tom Heinrichs, LeeAnne Schaefer Hemberg, our moderator, Bill Jordan (Elder), Tracey Watt (Elder), and our Pastor, Marjorie Wilhelmi. We are not empowered to take any action other than make recommendations to the Session. You have elected the Session to lead this congregation. Decisions about any changes to the Church or its programs can only be made by the Session.

How long will this process take? We don’t know. If there was a “quick fix,” the Session would already have done it. We’re in it for the long term, committed to put in the time and effort necessary to make sound recommendations with appropriate plans of action.

What do you have to say about all of this? We cannot do this alone and don’t intend to work “in a vacuum.” When the time is right, we will ask for your perspectives into Christ’s call to us. Please be patient as we work toward that time, and use the interim to pray for our future ministry as a church and to consider carefully your vision of a faithful future here at Northbrook. Please be energized and positive. Complaints or demands will not be helpful. Prayerfully consider how you are called to apply your time, talent and treasure to do God’s work. How will you help build this future in a dramatically different world?

Yours in Christ, Keith Larson Northbrook Elder, Class of 2014

What is The Balcony Group?

The Session has decided to embark upon a focused and deliberate process of Strategic Planning. The session commissioned a “Balcony Group” to do this important work. Why is it called a “Balcony Group”? Since we don’t have a balcony and don’t intend to construct one, this is strictly a metaphor to guide our visioning process. We will gather “on the balcony” away from our regular activities. From this virtual balcony, we will have a clear and uninterrupted view of our entire church.

Why a Strategic Planning effort? What’s wrong with the way things are right now? We have sufficient data to indicate clearly that Northbrook is following the trends of many churches across the country and around the world. Over the past 20 years, we can see declines in active membership, worship attendance, participation in Christian Education and levels of giving. These trends can seem quite alarming. But, as always, God gives us both reason to hope and hard choices to make. The Session has elected to take on the challenges of our changing culture, neighborhood and society. As a church, we are blessed with abundant resources, both materially and spiritually. We have everything we need to be faithful to God’s call, and we’re ready to get started.

Whom have we entrusted with such important work? The Balcony Group includes Session members, recent members and long standing ones, different educational backgrounds and a variety of problem solving styles. Most

Congratulations Matthew Bauhof

McCormick Theological Seminary’s first-year student, our own Matthew D. Bauhof, has been named recipient of one of the four Omaha Presbyterian Seminary Foundation’s Apollos Scholarships for the 2012-2013 school year. Matt received the Eugene C. Dinsmore Scholarship named for a leader who envisioned providing support for seminarians in the Midwest region.

The Omaha Presbyterian Seminary Foundation’s Apollos Program derives its name from the young man described in Acts 18:24-26. Apollos was fervent in the scriptures and eloquent in proclaiming the gospel, but he needed more education. Fortunately, his friends were compelled to support him and arranged for additional training so that he could teach the Good News with authority.

McCormick is one of the nation’s most respected seminaries, preparing women and men from all backgrounds for Christian ministry and service, advancing a model of education that is cross-cultural, urban, Reformed and ecumenical.

Again, Congratulations, Matt!

Adult Learning Opportunities

Sundays at 9:30 a.m. Adult Bible Class led by Rev. Thomson Heinrichs. The Words We Live By is the title of the class. How do the words of faith affect the way we live? This class seeks an understanding of the words from a Biblical perspective. The outcome of class discussions is to identify the meaning of those key words as factors that govern our behavior in relation to Jesus Christ, to each other and to the church. Sundays at 11:00 a.m. Adult Bible Study led by Grant Burnham and Michael Bauhof. This class takes a look at the sermons from that day’s worship. There is a lot of discussion in this class, and it follows the Feasting on the Word lectionary resources. Exploring Prayer—A Nine Month Journey Prayer is a powerful and essential part of our relationship with God. You are invited to a nine-month, experiential class on prayer. Each month will focus on a different approach to prayer, drawing on spiritual practices that have proven helpful to Christians throughout centuries. It’s never too late to get started. We meet once a month, on the third Tuesday of the month, from 6-6:45 pm, in the Sanctuary. Accompanying emails will encourage you along the way. If interested, please email [email protected] to get started. What’s the Story? — A Journey through the Old Testament led by Rev. Marjorie Wilhelmi. There is still time to join this class which meets on Wednesdays. The morning class is from 10-11:30 a.m., and the evening class is from 7-8:30 p.m. You will gain insight into the over-arching story of the Hebrew scriptures, the critical events, themes and characters along the way and how this story is the foundation for the New Testament. Whether you have never opened the Bible before or are a veteran scholar, we will all find new relevance for our faith and daily lives. Our textbook will be the Bible!

Another year at LOGOS has begun. The dates for this first half of the year are as follows:

September 19 & 26 October 3, 10, 17 & 24

November 7 & 14 NO LOGOS on November 28 - Thanksgiving

LOGOS is Northbrook’s after school program for children and youth from kindergarten through 12th grades. It’s a fun time with Bible study, a family time dinner and games, and worship skills that include bells, skits, videos, etc. Our LOGOS Covenant describes how we behave toward one another.

Each person:

Has a right to be treated with kindness and respect.

This means that no one will be put down, ignored or have their feelings hurt.

Has a right to be treated as a child of God. This means that no one will be treated unfairly for any reason.

Has a right to have their own opinions. The opinions of everyone in the group will be respectfully considered.

Has a right to be safe. This means no one will do anything to endanger another person. There will be no abuse to people or the building.

Has a right to learn. This means all ideas will be respected and may be expressed without being interrupted, and questions may be asked without criticism.

Keep your ears open listening for the JOYFUL NOISE, a new LOGOS group for kids from K-5th grade. Led by Kari Gorman, this group of ringers-singers-creators-and all around great kids will be part of our worship leadership throughout the year!

Dear Northbrook, I can’t even begin to think of the right words to thank you. Not only did you support me and care for me the past 3 years, you also sent me off with wonderful WONDERFUL gifts. Thank you all so very very much for the Kindle Fire. I’ve already read all three books in the Hunger Games series and am now working on The DaVinci Code. I don’t think I’ve ever read so much! I also want to thank you for the BEAUTIFUL prayer shawl. Now that it’s getting a little bit cooler, I’ve been using it to warm up and every time I put it on, I remember how blessed I am to have so many people praying for me. I also LOVE the beautiful scrapbook and frame full of photos that you gave me. The photos are hanging up in my bedroom and the scrapbook puts a smile on my face every time I flip through it. Finally, thank you all so much for the financial gift you gave me. It’s given me the opportunity to take time to think about where God’s calling me next. I’m so blessed to have met you all and I think about you constantly, especially all the youth. Thank you for the wonderful gifts and for all the time we spent together. I love you and God bless you all! Yours in Christ, Grace Iglehart

We are back in school having a great time. The 4/5’s have

studied all about insects. We can count out six legs, three body

parts, two antennae and two eyes. We even have a song to sing

about them!!

The three year olds have been learning to recognize their names, shapes and, most importantly, to share and wait their turn. A very

difficult task!

MISSION TRIP TO SOUTHERN INDIANA

SCHEDULED FOR MAY, 2013

On March 2nd of this year, a category 4 tornado leveled the town of Henryville, Indiana. The tornado carried 170 mile per hour winds and stayed on the ground for more than 50 miles. Observers said the town was simply "gone." Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is now working with Metro United Way of Louisville to rebuild the homes and lives shattered by the tornado. Our congregation is organizing a mission trip to Henryville for next May. The rebuilding process will involve homes, barns and other structures. It is difficult to predict exactly what the stage of reconstruc-tion will be at that time. We have been assured that there will be a variety of tasks to suit people of all skill levels.

Henryville is located in southern Indiana, just a few miles north of Louisville, Kentucky. We estimate that it is approximately a 6 hour drive from Detroit. We have identified a number of housing options, including a Hampton Inn located a few miles north of Henryville and a Christian retreat center that is also close by. We haven't selected exact dates for the trip, but we are leaning toward the week of May 4 - 11. Average temperatures for Louisville in May are a high of 77 and a low of 57, just perfect for a little aerobic activity. Marjorie will be leading our trip and is excited to "hit the road" with a group of energetic Northbrookers. If you are interested in participating in this trip, please contact Sherrill Heinrichs. We will further define the dates and housing arrange-ments once we have a better idea of the size and availability of our team. Carl H. von Ende

Our upcoming chili cookoff fundraiser will give everyone the special opportunity to meet and greet the Director of the Fort St./Open Door Program, Benjamin Ogden. Born and raised in Detroit, Ben has always worked to promote individuals struggling to better themselves and the world around them.

With a background in psychology and counseling with a specialty in addiction-recovery, he has served as the Open Door's program facilitator as well as the Social Worker/Case Manager since 2003. He has been at the forefront of efforts to provide a greater scope of care to those in need, and he believes that, if provided the correct tools and resources, the people we help can and will succeed. Under his guidance, service has grown from a once-per-week program to one that now provides assistance daily and is accessible at four separate locations. He has helped us to continue to blur the lines between participants, volunteers and professional staff so that we may better embody true hospitality to strangers.

Our congregation hopefully will continue to fill the beautiful bins in the hallway with gently used clothing, shoes, bedding and new gifts through our Mission giving. Thanks to all who continue to show the love of Jesus through generous giving whether it is through the chili cook-off, the angel tree donations, working on the food line downtown on Thursdays or donations of magazines and cards. All of these are varying ways through which to serve within our community.

Meet Judith and Philip Owen

When Judy and Phil Owen kindly agreed to be interviewed, we met in the kitchen after a recent 11 a.m. Sunday service. Phil and I sat on stools at the counter watching Judy and Sherrill Heinrichs, Director of Church Education, prepare lunch for the Balcony Committee. All three are the best of friends and lively conversationalists.

The kitchen is a likely place to find Judy and Phil if they aren’t singing in the choir, attending meetings or teaching. Judy says they started coming to Northbrook Church in 1986, “because our daughter, Susan, attended Vacation Bible School here and loved it.” Phil adds, “We had a good feeling about this church…we just loved the ambience.” He recalls the time early on when they made bread and butter pickles for Jr. Goodwill here in this kitchen That could have been the start of all the tasty things they have been cooking up ever since. He confesses, “I make good brownies and I used to make them for the kids I tutored.” However, he says, “Judy is the main cook.”

She looks up from the big bowl of salad she is mixing, “I didn’t know, at first, that I liked to cook – not for a long time.” Now, as coordinator for the Senior Soup Supper and for many special occasion meals, her level of expertise matches her unstoppable energy. When she is working in the kitchen, Phil is usually nearby helping because they delight in doing things together. They share interests ranging from golf and bowling to shopping. He admits to being one of a few men who like to shop,

especially garage sales and antique shows. Both love gardening, rescuing animals, history, and, of course, hosting gatherings of family and friends.

Judy and Phil met on a blind, or rather semi-blind date when they were students at Michigan State University. It was a semi-blind because Phil’s roommate sensed they would make a great couple. Phil, from Grosse Pointe, had seen Judy, from Findlay, Ohio, at a fraternity party and liked what he saw. But, she didn’t remember him. It turned out the roommate knew what he was doing. They clicked. Judy says as they describe all the things they like to do together, “We’re still best friends.”

In addition to the skills mentioned, she has served as a Sunday school teacher, church elder, journalist and nursery school volunteer. She says, “Sherrill and I met in the Co-op Nursery School.”

Phil, a Deacon for six years and a member of the Congregational Life Committee, recently retired after 44 years as school psychologist for the Detroit Public Schools. “I saw a lot of crime and poverty, saw houses turn into vacant lots and forests, but I never questioned it (his career). I was there to help the kids.” He pauses and says, “The city does affect us – whatever hits us out here hits them worse.”

In addition to daughter, Susan, they have two sons, Pete and his wife, Jennifer, who live in Dexter and have four boys. Tim, his wife, Jessie, both chiropractors live near Baltimore, MD and are expecting their first child in several months. Susan works at the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Jackson, WY and plans to be married next June in a natural, outdoor setting to a fellow biologist, Chris Colligan.

Sherrill and husband, Thom Heinrichs, live a few houses from Phil and Judy. Sherrill says, as they put slices of pumpkin pie on the dessert plates, “I want to say they are the best neighbors you could possibly have. We share pet care, we share projects…we have been good friends for a long, long time.” Corinne Abatt

Facing the Inevitable

In a cemetery outside a small town, a brief graveside service

had just ended. Only an elderly man and his pastor

remained. They began walking slowly from grave to grave,

reading the names of the deceased. Every few minutes, the elderly man stopped and

said, “I knew him very well. Oh yes, I remember her.” Then he

said, “Pastor, I know more people out here than I know

back in town.”

The pastor realized the man’s words revealed an inevitable

truth. But he also remembered another, more wonderful, truth. Jesus promised: “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would

I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

(John 14:1-2, NRSV).

Although death is a given, so is eternal life for Christ’s followers.

The Blood Pressure Screening Fall Dates are:

October 21 November 18 December 9

10:30 a.m. in the Library

High blood pressure is dangerous because it makes the heart work too hard, and the force of its blood flow can harm arteries. High blood pressure often has no warning signs or symptoms, and, if uncontrolled, it can lead to heart and kidney disease and stroke.

Find out if you have high blood pressure by visiting our free Blood Pressure Screening in the Library. Come if your doctor has asked you to monitor your blood pressure readings. Come if you don’t know what your blood pressure readings are or should be. Our nurses, Patty Van Loo and Kathy Bauhof, are able to help you understand what your blood pressure numbers are telling you. All your information is kept confidential. See you there!

Flu shots will again be given at Northbrook on

Sunday, October 14th from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.

Anyone 6 months of age and older is eligible.

Sign up sheets are on the cabinets in Fellowship Hall. Questions?

"To be happy at home is the ultimate result of all ambition." This was said by Samuel Johnson. I do believe these words. Try these suggestions. Be grateful for what is good and give thanks. Try not to over schedule. Try not to make promises you can't keep. If you don't love it, live without it. Approach problems as challenges. Really laugh more often. Nurture friendships. You will never please everybody. Set goals you can achieve. For every "yes" there may be a "no". Care for your soul. Happiness is a living emotion. Express love very day. If you love them, tell them. Keep a tidy house; and If you don't like it, don't eat it.

Blessings from my house to your house. Rose

Northbrook’s Rose Paulette Lein has graciously volunteered to lead a book discussion on an amazing and well-reviewed book by Isabel Wilkerson entitled The Warmth of Other Suns. This non-fiction tome is about three young people from the deep south who moved north/west to begin life

anew during The Great Migration which lasted from 1915 to 1970, involved six million people and was one of the largest internal migrations in U.S. history. It changed our country. Wilkerson spent 15 years researching and writing this book. This is a most interesting, in-depth coverage of that time span in our nation’s history.

Join us for a time of fellowship over lunch. Bring your own sandwich and the Adult Education Committee will supply dessert and beverages. We will be meet on October 15 at 11:30 a.m. in the Library. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT BOOK to share...and enriching to the human spirit!

As always, please bring your friends. Contact Seglinda Pritchard with any of your questions.

PWN is for all women of Northbrook. We would love to have more active members partici-pate in our meetings and events.

We are still collecting non-perishable food items for Second Mile. Please continue to put these items on the cart outside the kitchen.

To support our mission and schol-arship fund, we are collecting re-turnable cans. Drop them off on the cart by the kitchen also. Thanks for your support!

PWN Book Club All are welcome to join our informal book discussion that meets every 6 weeks. Our next book is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. We will meet on Monday, October 8th at 7:00 p.m. in the Li-brary. The book is available at Coffee Hour for all who are interested.
