Again, we are so grateful to all of you who participated in the Holy Cow online survey and small group discussions which helped provide the content of the report. We could not have done it without you. Your input was critical to the process, so thank you again!! If you have any questions, please reach out to anyone on the committee. Cans for Communion—Sunday, August 11 Camp Sunday is August 4th so communion will be served on Sunday, August 11. Please bring cans of food to the church so we can help put food on the table for those who are hungry. No glass and please make sure the cans don't have expired dates on them. Thank you!

Where Do the Cans Go? Your donated cans are being delivered to the Open Door Outreach Center

in Waterford. The Open Door Outreach Center, in the spirit of interfaith charity, provides emergency services of food, clothing and referral information to families in need. Many of the clients have endured great hardships before coming to Open Door. They are in desperate need of understanding, help and hope. Services are tailored to meet specific needs aiding each person to reach self sufficiency. Northbrook is blessed to be able to provide funding through our mission giving as well as cans for communion every month. Please contact Open Door at (248)360-2930 if you are interested in providing additional help. Thank you for your support.

SOS—How You Can Make A Difference Northbrook will be hosting South Oakland Shelter (SOS) guests from September 8—15. This is an all hands on deck venture so please be sure to see the sign-up sheets in Fellowship Hall to volunteer for transportation, meals and security. Also, we are accepting monetary donations to help pay for a van to pick up the mattresses, gas, food and laundry. Please see Barb Stetson for questions and more details.

Backyard Bible and Beverage This summer we’ve been reading and discussing Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again by Rachel Held Evans. The locations for the book study change every week, but the worthwhile discussion is consistent. Join us on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. Locations and readings are listed below. Newcomers are always welcome. Remember to bring a beverage of your choice, too. Contact Pastor Jackie with questions at [email protected].

Auto Available!

We are excited that member, Jim Grady, has donated his 2005 Chrysler Pacifica to Northbrook! Jim hopes that its sale will raise funds for the church and fill a need for someone in the congregation seeking reliable transportation. The car is a well-maintained, four door, two-wheel drive SUV with approximately 140,000 miles. It is currently parked in the southeast corner of our parking lot, and you may take a closer look inside and out following worship on Sundays. Jim worked with Deacon Allison Broadwell and the Finance Committee to make the gift which the National Auto Dealers Association Guide lists at $3,400 for similar vehicles. To submit an offer to purchase it, please return this form to Becky in the office by Thursday, August 15. Thank you, Jim, for choosing to benefit others and our church through your generous gift.

Holy Casserollers—August 5th & August 6th A group will again gather in the Northbrook kitchen on August 5 at 6:30 p.m. to prepare a meal for our homeless neighbors at The Welcome Inn. No cooking experience is necessary, and all ages are welcome. We’ll then be serving lunch at The Inn on Tuesday, August 6 from 12-2 p.m. The Welcome Inn is housed out of Berkley Community Church. If you would like to volunteer for either day, please contact Pastor Jackie at [email protected].

SMALL GREAT THINGS is the most important novel Jodi Picoult has ever written. Frank, uncomfortably introspective and right on the day’s headlines, it will challenge her readers...The difficult self awareness is what sustains this book...forcing engaged readers to meditate on their own beliefs and actions along with these characters....It's also exciting to have a high-profile writer like Picoult take an earnest risk to expand our cultural conversation about race and prejudice. – Washington Post

THE CHALLENGE IS ON!! ARE YOU READY?? Northbrook book club members
