Changes to the way we deliver our Online Learning

• 12 years of Distance Learning (from CDROM and hard copy to VLE and eBook included in the fees)

• Modules developed for a full online delivery, then tailored to suit other delivery modes – core text at the centre of the development, not as a parallel resource

• Delivering multiple programmes to 9 partner institutions

Changing the way we view of students

• Students seen as customers and consumers of an online service • Tangible investment – am I just paying for a password?• Increasing demand for more contact time with tutors• ? As long as I’ve got internet access and a

dedicated window of time to study• “Out of sight/site, out of mind” – challenge of remoteness and

isolation • Creation of service level agreements, and formal feedback on

the services we provide

How are we adapting to the changing Online Learning environment?

• online reading lists for every module and session– 600 online reading lists now available

• Reading lists available on open access programme sites for promotion and marketing

• Audit of core texts across all modules and all levels– Common texts between modules– Text which are used between levels

• Proposals for provision of a free eBook for each module– Is the cost of investment in eBooks sustainable in increasing the

opportunities for partner delivery/franchises/internationalisation?

Changing the way we develop the online experience

Changing learning to adapt to changing learner styles

• eBook as social media platform - use of notes and subscriptions for peer-support, and targeted debates?

• Engaging learners in making the reference material relevant to themselves - what stories can they tell from what they have read and understood?

• eBooks as a core to the module development - not just core reading to support the learners comprehension

• Building for ubiquitous learning experiences – always an opportunity to learning, not just during “study” period

• Making reading eBooks challenging and fun – don’t just set a reading, discuss it, comment on it, contribute to classmates comments and understanding
