New Year, New Look for Torrance Public Safety Both the Torrance Police Department and the Torrance Fire Department have updated the patches that they wear on their uniforms—check them out along with an explanation of the significance of the patch-es below! Torrance Police Department Torrance Fire Department TFD has incorporated the City of Torrance logo back into its shoulder patch which is encompassed by a red Maltese cross. The Maltese cross has a rich history of symbolizing a noble breed dedicated to serv-ing their fellow man. The Maltese cross is character-ized by 8 points on the cross. Each point of the cross represents a virtue that is relative to the job of a fire-fighter. The 8 points are: Observation - To constantly be aware Tact - To be professional in speech Dexterity - To be versatile Explicitness - To clearly communicate Perseverance - To never quit Sympathy- To treat others gently Gallantry - To step up when duty calls Loyalty - To be committed The patch also reflects TFD’s Class 1 Rating and the year 1912 when the department was established. TFD now has rockers located beneath the patch to identify certain specialty assignments (paramedic, hazmat, fire prevention). The new patch will now be worn on both shoulders of TFD’s work and dress uniforms.
