Update from the Torrance Fire Department

There are a lot of exciting things going on at the Torrance Fire Department (TFD)! To begin, TFD recently hired a new class of firefighter recruits that will be participating in a 10 week training session at TFD’s Fire station #2. The recruits will be graduating on June 8th with a ceremony to be held at the Tor-rance Cultural Arts Center. Additionally, TFD is hosting its annual open house for Fire Service Day on Saturday, May 13th, 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at all Torrance Fire stations. Another exciting event coming up is TFD’s annual Appreciation and Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 3rd at the Double Tree Hotel. The event will honor both community members and TFD personnel. For more information, visit www.torrancechamber.com. Lastly, TFD plans to increase its social media presence over the next few months. Be on the lookout for TFD related information on so-cial media platforms such as Nextdoor, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Torrance Police Department to Host Coffee w/ a Cop

The Torrance Police Department is hosting a “Coffee With a Cop” event on Thursday, May 4, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the Old Torrance Coffee and Tea House located at 1413 Marcelina Ave. Members of the community are invited to attend. This is a great opportunity for community members to get to know some of TPD’s officers.

Coyote Safety Information

Over the past few months, there has been an increased number of coyote sightings within Torrance, particularly in North Torrance. The public can obtain important information on coyotes and the City of Torrance’s coyote management plan by visiting the city’s website www.torranceca.gov/tpd/ and clicking on the “Living With Urban Coyotes” link.

Want to get involved in local government?

A great way to get involved in local government is by serving on a City of Torrance Commission. To be eligible to serve on a city commission, you must complete a two hour commission certification class. The next Commis-sion Certification class will be held on Tuesday, May 30 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the George Nakano Theatre, 3330 Civic Center Drive. Light refresh-ments will be served. To register for the class, please visit: http://www.torranceca.gov/CommissionerCert.htm.

North Torrance Community Lead Officer Receives Unit Citation Award

This past month, North Torrance Community Lead Officer Stephen Kim received the Torrance Police Department’s Unit Citation Award for his part in an extensive operation that brought dozens of criminals to justice. The operation, entitled “Operation Oncoming,” spanned several months and culminated in the confiscation of over 7 kilograms of black tar heroin; 11 illegal weapons; over a half pound of methamphetamine, rock & powder cocaine, psilocybin, pre-scription medications, marijuana, and LSD; and $171,000 in narcotics proceeds. In addition, a total of over 45 subjects who were involved in the distribution of tar heroin to both adults and juveniles throughout the City of Torrance were arrested.

The motivation behind the operation was a heartbreaking incident last year that resulted in the deaths of two young adults who were struck head on by a car that was being driven by a man who was found to have significant amounts of opiates in his system. Following this horrific accident, the driver was sentenced to six years in prison; however, Of-ficer Kim and his teammates continued to seek justice for the victims. They did this by launching Operation Oncoming, which identified and targeted the heroin supplier to the driver, leading to the supplier’s arrest and to the aforemen-tioned convictions and confiscations.

Members of Officer Kim’s unit included Officers Michael Guell, Scott Norris, Daniel Cid, Gregory Dukeman, Eric Ber-nier, Mathew Wessels, Thomas Besse, and Sergeant Charles Fisher. TPD’s Traffic and Special Investigations section also assisted with the operation. Well done Officer Kim and the Torrance Police Department!
