Don’t make us come gitcha! That exclamation is your official

invitation to this year’s 82nd NorthTexas State Fair and Rodeo(NTSFR).

Since 1928, this beloved annualevent has promoted the cowboyway during its nine-days of romp-ing rodeo, spectacular countrymusic, amazing attractions, tastyvittles, pageants, contests and evena parade.

Beginning Friday, August 20through Saturday, August 28, thefair is expected to attract morethan 150,000 people to the NorthTexas State Fairgrounds atUniversity Drive and CarrollBoulevard, its location since 1948.

Branding the fair each year istruly a calling and labor of love forits executive director, GlennCarlton, who once competed in therodeo arena. For the past severalyears, it has been his mission tofind the truest and most respectfulway of representing the cultureand traditions associated with thefair.

A picture featuring five littlecowboys from the Mutton Bustincompetition made its way toCarlton after last year’s fair.

Ranging from four to six years old, each young cowboy in the photo isdecked from head to toe in hats, boots, vests and long sleevedshirts. It triggered inspiration.

“I immediately knew it wassomething that we had to use,” hesaid. Nanci Kimmey, NTSFR’sexecutive assistant, agreed.

With the picture in mind, hekept thinking about it until hecame up with “don’t make us comegitcha.”

“I was so excited. I think I calledNanci at 11 p.m. to tell her I gotit,” Carlton said. “Then we reunit-ed the young cowboys for a profes-sional photo and video shoot. Wegot some great stuff!”

The final poster features threeboys, Levi Nelson (his mom,Amanda shot and sent in the ini-tial photo), Ronnie Sellers, andRiley Webb, all wearing toughcowboy expressions on their littleboy faces.

Artist Ron Bonge, who lives inClifton, Texas, created the posterand has worked with NTSFR forthe last five years. Bonge also cre-ates commissions for the Heart OTexas Fair and Rodeo, San

Antonio Stock Show and Rodeoand the National Finals Rodeo.

“I really enjoy working on rodeoposters,” Bonge said. “I really likedrawing and painting cow kidsand cow dogs so this year’s themewas a lot of fun to work with.Everyone likes a little cowboy.”

And there will be plenty of littleand big cowboy and cowgirl rodeoaction, plus big time musicalentertainment all for the generaladmission price of $12 for adultsand $5 for children. The DentonIndependent School District and afew of its neighboring school dis-tricts will issue a ticket to each stu-dent and area O’Reily Auto Partsstores also have free tickets on-

hand.The generous support of spon-

sors allows fair organizers to main-tain the value by offering afford-able, all-inclusive tickets.

“We wouldn’t be able do any-thing without our sponsors …many have been with us from thebeginning,” Kimmey said. “We’realso very excited about our newones.”

Sam’s Club is the new title spon-sor for the carnival and other firsttime supporters are the U.S Army,7-Eleven and the Health MartHealthy Living Tour.

Darr Equipment, a sponsor lastyear, doubled its sponsorship thisyear by bringing in extra JVCequipment.

Title sponsors are: Miller Litefor the rodeo, DATCU for the Kid’sZone and it’s the SyracuseSausageFun Zone. Budweiser sup-ports the two music stages.

“It’s very heartwarming to real-ize in this community, no matterwhat is going on, we have strongand loyal support from our spon-sors. They are the backbone of ourorganization along with our com-munity, volunteers and city lead-

ers,” Kimmey said. A core group of nearly 400 vol-

unteers help run the fair each year. Many of those folks will be onhand for the North Texas StateFair and Rodeo Parade which willbe held Saturday, August 21. Thisyear’s Parade Marshal is countrywestern singer Moe Bandy, whotakes the Budweiser stage laterthat evening.

Line up for the parade begins at8:30 a.m. The parade starts at 10a.m. The first come – first servedstarting line up will be at DentonHigh School, 1007 Fulton St. inDenton.

Back on the fairgrounds, atten-dees will notice several improve-ments including new walkwaysand resurfaced parking areas.

“We keep getting bigger andbetter,” Kimmey said.

“It’s always our goal to make itthe best fair ever,” Carlton added.“Our intention is to continue to setattendance and revenue recordsallowing us to give back even moreto the community.”

Fair delivers economic impactAlong with its cultural influence

and tribute to tradition, the posi-tive economic impact of the NorthTexas State Fair and Rodeo(NTSFR) lasts much longer thanits nine-day run.

Each year, more than $50,000in scholarships, community sup-port, facility donations and otherdonations for youth and commu-nity projects is made possiblebecause of the fair’s contribution.

NTSFR also donates the use ofthe entire facility to the DentonCounty Livestock Association toproduce its Youth Fair eachMarch, raising nearly $300,000for area youth through the projectsale and scholarships. The com-bined efforts of these organiza-tions give back $350,000 eachyear.

“It’s our goal to continue togrow the fair and do even more,”said Glenn Carlton, ExecutiveDirector of the North Texas StateFair and Rodeo.

In addition, the economicimpact on the surrounding com-munity was measured during ayear-long study that began at the2008 Fair.

Conducted by the Center forEconomic Development atUniversity of North Texas underthe direction of Dr. Terry Clower, the study concluded that in 2008the benefit to the county was $6million and the direct impact onthe city of Denton was $3.2 mil-lion.

“When Dr. Clower released oureconomic impact report last yearhe told me that a basic model hasbeen established,” Carlton said.“Whatever percentage the event

grew, it would affect the economicimpact that same percentage. Wegrew 17 percent in 2009, so thatwould convert our economicimpact to more than $7 million forDenton County, and $3.7 milliondirect impact on the City ofDenton.”

According to the study, theindustries that receive the mostimpact are food services, enter-tainment venues and lodging. Thesurvey also showed that about 25percent of fairgoers travel fromoutside of the city of Denton.

The study provides importantdata for growing the event andmoving forward toward building anew facility in the future, Carltonsaid.

Non-stop action in the NTSF rodeo arenaWorld champion cowboys get

well acquainted with crafty, pow-erful livestock each night in therodeo arena during the NorthTexas State Fair and Rodeo.

Professional Rodeo CowboysAssociation contestants willcompete Friday, Aug. 20,through Sunday, Aug. 22, in aseries of events including bare-back riding, steer wrestling, teamroping, saddle bronc riding, Tie-Down Roping, Steer Roping,Barrel Racing and bull riding.

The Invitational Ranch Rodeois Monday, Aug. 23, is followedby the future of the industry withthe 21 and Under Rodeo whichtakes place Tuesday, Aug. 24, andWednesday, Aug. 25.

Bulls take center stage for theBull Blowout Thursday, Aug. 26,through Saturday, Aug. 28.

Weldon Burgoon, owner ofWeldon’s Western Wear andSaddle Shop, said events likethese groom future rodeo stars.

“For those starting out, this isa good opportunity to be in frontof large crowds and the lights,” aswitch, he said, from some ven-ues in which an audience maymainly be relatives.

Burgoon’s memories of theNorth Texas State Fair andRodeo date back more than sixdecades.

He remembers the excitementhe felt roping in the arena at age11.

“I was roping at the fair androdeo in 1946 in the tie down andbreak away roping.”

Back then it was called theDenton County Agricultural Fairand was located on property nearwhat is now the City of DentonPolice Station.

According to Burgoon, Dr.W.C. Kimbrough gave the fairassociation the 20 some-oddacres where the existing fair-grounds are located today. Boardmembers sold $500 bonds andbuilt the first of the three live-stock buildings and one of theexisting exhibit buildings.

Burgoon served as rodeochairman for 14 years until 1987.

Today, the 80-year-old will beon-hand for the four days ofMutton Bustin for four to six yearolds - an event his store has con-tinuously supported.

“We’ve always tried to help the

young people,” Burgoon said. “Wehave sponsored it ever since theyintroduced it into the DentonCounty Livestock AssociationYouth Fair. Then NTSFR decidedit would be a good event for themto have, too.”

Burgoon provides the safety hel-

mets and vest at no charge.Participants also receive a nicetoken buckle and, this year, the 10finalists will also get a gift certifi-cate for a free pair of Wranglerjeans.

Volunteers do the hard work atthe event, he said, and at his age,

“it’s best if I hide, watch and stayout of the way.”

Burgoon’s family will all attendthe fair at some point. He said hewill watch the Mutton Bustin com-petition from an elevated chair, near the shoot where the ridersmount the sheep.

After rounds of watching theircompetitors get tossed to theground by sheep, some riders get alittle apprehensive. Burgoon saidhe often hears a “good many dis-cussions - there is some pleadingbetween the parents and ridersgoing on.”

North Texas State Fair ropes in top-notch musicFresh from shooting a music

video in Corpus Christi for his newsong and first Top 40 hit on thecountry music charts, “PoundSign,” it’s obvious Kevin Fowler ishaving fun.

“I am out plugging the new sin-gle. It’s kicking butt – the first top40 hit we’ve ever had!”

The song is available now onITunes and the full record will beout in October.

“We’re hoping to get the videodone in the next couple of weeks,”Fowler said. “The single is alreadyout and it has been number onefor about four weeks on the Texascharts and now it has broke thetop 40 …it’s moving along doingits thing.”

Fowler will be doing his thingon the Budweiser main stage atthe North Texas State Fair andRodeo on Thursday, August 26.

“It’s just a good old country fair,”Fowler said of the venue which heand many of his fellow “Red Dirt”musicians continuously agree toplay.

“That’s the cool thing aboutTexas and it doesn’t happen any-where else … (like) at the NorthTexas State Fair …you see everybody from grandkids to greatgrandparents coming out. That’sthe magic to me about the wholeTexas music scene.”

Some of Fowler’s friends, likeMark Chesnutt, are on the venueas well.

“Me and Chestnutt, I thinkwe’re forbidden to hang with eachany more by our managers andour wives,” he said. “We are goodold drinking buddies …somebodyalways almost goes to jail when wehang out.”

Fowler may be too busy to behanging out with fellow musiciansbut he always makes time for fans.

“Every single night I stay andsign autographs until the very lastperson. It’s all about the fans andyou don’t get that anywhere else . .. most Texas artists are very acces-sible and very hands on with thefans. That’s really what it’s allabout.”

Fair organizers know they’vegot the best of the best playingtheir stages this year.

“We have the hottest line upwe’ve ever have,” said the Fair’sExecutive Assistant NanciKimmey. The music line-up holdsacross the board appeal.

“I’ve had lots of phone calls

from fan club people,” Kimmeysaid. “That is what is so wonderfulabout of our performers – theytranscend all ages.”

“Stoney LaRue, Randy Rogers,Mark Chesnutt . . . how can youchoose to come just one night?”Kimmey added. “You have tocome all nine days!”

On the Budwesier Stage all con-certs begin at 9:30 p.m. For a listof the entertainers performing onthe Bud Light Stage, please visitwww.ntfair.com.

now performs close to 300 dates ayear at top festivals and venuesacross the world, including theCaribbean and Europe, sharingbills with renowned acts like LeeAnn Womack, Gary Allan, DierksBentley, Cross CanadianRagweed, Willie Nelson, RodneyCrowell and others. With a bandthat includes JeremyBryant(drums), Jesse Fritz (bass),Kevin Webb (guitar), JeremyWatkins (fiddle) and SteveLittleton (keys), Stoney is poisedfor what is on the horizon to come. The music is undeniably inside ofLaRue, but he’s the type of artistthat doesn’t have to point it out toyou, his belief in the music isstrong enough that it just powersthrough transparently. LaRue isnot trying to be anybody but theartist that he is, and his sincerityjust seeps out, spills off the stage, and overtakes any room.

SSaattuurrddaayy,, AAuugguusstt 2211MMooee BBaannddyyMoe Bandy is one of the most

popular country singers of ourtimes, producing a series of hitsthat made him known as one ofthe great honky tonk singers ofcountry music. Bandy’s songsembraced traditional barroomfare, often humorous, telling sto-ries of love, cheating, drinking, and patriotism. His biggest run ofhits came from ‘70s and early ‘80sand over a long career he hasremained a popular favoritethrough his theater in Branson,MO. Bandy has added to his solocareer by teaming up with othergreats such as Joe Stampley, JudyBailey and Janey Frickey withsuch greats as “Holding the Bag”and “It’s a Cheatin’ Situation.” MoeBandy’s awards include MostPromising Male Vocalist, Song ofthe Year, Duo of the Year and BestCountry Video.

SSuunnddaayy,, AAuugguusstt 2222JJoohhnn AArrtthhuurr MMaarrttiinneezzJohn Arthur Martinez offers

flowing melodies and stories toldby a true Texas songwriter, evoca-tive lyrics inspired by wide openspaces, friends, family and thewayfarers crossing paths in unex-pected ways. Martinez’ music isfilled with the spiritual and cre-ative energy of Texas’ Hill Country. He bears musical influences rang-ing from Dan Fogelberg andJames Taylor to Carlos Santana,Cuco Sanchez and Asleep at theWheel. Martinez’s roots, and hisheart, lie squarely in Texas, notNashville or Europe. His music, further nourished by his Mexican-American heritage, contains aunique depth and earnestness.

MMoonnddaayy,, AAuugguusstt 2233JJaakkee HHooookkeerrJake Hooker was born listening

to the sounds of traditional coun-try music through his father’s westTexas country band. Hookerbegan playing the bass at the ageof seven and practiced diligentlyuntil he mastered the honky tonksound. He formed his own bandat the age of 14 and began per-forming. By the age of 18,Hooker was playing bass andsinging full time. His love andpassion for traditional countrymusic never ceases. There is nodoubt that Jake is strongly influ-enced by the sounds of Ray Price,Johnny Bush, Faron Young, CurtisPotter, Leon Rausch, and DarrellMcCall.

TTuueessddaayy,, AAuugguusstt 2244RRiicchh OO’’TToooolleeMake no mistake about it, Rich

Appearingon the album is a star-studded castof musicians including ChrisMasterson (Jack Ingram’s Beat UpFord Band), Rich Brotherton(Robert Earl Keen Band), NickWorley (Cooder Graw and CoryMorrow Band) and Bobby Flores. The result of his hard work is evi-denced in his early success. Hisdebut single “Queen of the Misfits”

has already gone top 5 on the TexasMusic Chart and the TexasRegional Radio report after hav-ing been on the chart a short time. And while all of this might soundimpressive, O’Toole is just warm-ing up. The sky truly is the limit forthis rising singer/songwriter.

Not too bad of a track record fora guy who never felt he really hadany business being in the musicbusiness. Stalling composes songsthat seem about the here and nowyet seem to also have one footplanted in the past. Sporting avintage LBJ style “open road” hat, which is dangerously close tobecoming his trademark,Stalling’s shows are at once inti-mate and up-close with him chat-ting up the crowd between songs, and a ‘tour de force’ of sound onthe shoulders of his top-shelf band

TThhuurrssddaayy,, AAuugguusstt 2266KKeevviinn FFoowwlleerrDown-home humor and heart-

felt sentiment are prominentthemes in Kevin Fowler’s music, and as important as a good beat. Anative of Amarillo who grew uplistening to Johnny Cash andMerle Haggard, Fowler roundedout his musical education in LosAngeles attending the GuitarInstitute of Technology, and thenreturned to Texas to join theaward-winning hard rock bandDangerous Toys. He dabbled withhis own Southern rock band,Thunderfoot, in the late ‘90s

before turning his full attention tohis own vision of music.

FFrriiddaayy,, AAuugguusstt 2277 RRaannddyy RRooggeerrss BBaanndd The Randy Rogers Band built

its audience by combining forces:It’s a dynamic live act centeredaround songs that fit the rowdy, party vibe of the concert circuit, but their songs also say some-thing. When the Randy RogersBand’s last project debuted as themost-downloaded country albumon iTunes, plenty of the industry“insiders” on Music Row were leftscratching their heads: Who arethese guys? The Nashville elitemay not have known about thefive-piece band, but much ofAmerica already did. RollingStone magazine ranked themalongside such artists as U2 andthe Stones in its list of Top 10Must-See Artists in the summer of2007.
