The city of Lynnwood is a hub of economic activity and boasts one of the largest shopping malls around. De-spite the city’s growth in the retail arena, they suffered

some major budget cuts in the last several years. “The city won’t be hosting any community celebra-tions this summer,” said Sarah Olson, Lynnwood’s marketing supervisor. “We had to cut all of our summer events a few years ago for budget reasons.” Although Lynnwood is planning on hosting a sum-mer Farmers’ Market starting in the summer of 2014, the only available activities during the summer of 2013 are put on by community groups and organizations in the area. Edmonds Community College is coordinating a Cel-ebration of Food festival, set to take place at the Lynnwood Convention Center in May. The event aims to celebrate and explore opportunities for cooking with real food. It is a free family event, hosted from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, at the Lynnwood Convention Center which is located at 3711 196th St. SW. The Celebration of Food festival is notable for bringing people with passion for wholesome, local food together in an environment that fosters innovation and a focus on health — not just of the consumer but also the environment. Last year’s festival brought in ranch-ers, farmers, youth, culinary professionals, business owners and students who offered activities and displays. “Lastyearwasourfirstoneanditwasquitesuccessful,so we decided to do it again,” said Michelle Graves of Edmonds

Community College. “It won’t change very much except that it will probably be bigger because more people have heard of it.” The festival also offers demonstrations, free food sam-ples, gardening displays, farm activities, information on how to grow your own food and purchase locally grown food, as well as opportunities to purchase books, food and other resources. For more information visit www.edcc.edu/foodfest. Every summer, Lynnwood hosts Shakespeare in the Park on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m. at Lynndale Park. The dates and shows are still being determined, but the events are free and fun for the whole family. Bring a blanket and a picnic and visit the Lynndale Park Amphitheater at 18927 72nd Ave. W. The Shakespeare plays will be performed by two professional theatre troupes — Wooden O and Green Stage. For more information visit www.LynnwoodArts.org. The Alderwood Terrace Rotary will host its sixth an-nual Concours d’Elegance at The Wood car show at the Lyn-nwood Golf Course. Entry to the car show is free, although all attendees can donate to the Rotary Club which supplies schol-arshipstobenefitkidsinthearea.Theshow,settotakeplacefrom 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, will display classic, sports and muscle cars. All proceeds for this car show are used for local, national and international charities that support youth. Recipients this past year have been Clothes for Kids, Pathways for Women, The Homework Center, Kids Around the World and Christian Ministries, just to name a few.

As the largest city in Snohomish County, it’s no surprise that Everett has several options for fun weekend activi-ties. From the Fourth of July celebration to the annual

Everett Sausage Fest, the possibilities are endless. But perhaps the most popular summer festival is Ever-ett’s Sorticulture, a garden arts festival. “We have a lot of summer events, but Sorticulture is the one that people travel to see,” said Kate Reardon, commu-nications director for the city of Everett. Sorticulture is a three-day festival taking place from June 7-9 in 2013, its 16th year. The festival aims to combine gardening and art, and focuses on outdoor living. Sorticulture features hand-crafted garden art displays andnurseriesfilledwithplantsforalltypesof gardensorback-yards. Garden art can range from decorative glass pieces, bird and squirrel feeders, and hand-carved wooden furniture, topottery, metalwork, bird houses, trellises and gardening tools. Sorticulture sees hundreds of artists from around the globe visit to display their work. The festival offers half a dozen display gardens to in-spire visitors to make spectacular art out of their own gardens. In 2012, the festival featured display gardens called Two Green

Thumbs Miniature Garden Center, Land Hoe! Landscape De-sign & Construction, Planscapes, Karen Stefonick Design & Complete Landscape, Susan Browne Landscape Design and Innovative Landscape Technologies. In addition to the display gardens, vendors sell land-scaping and gardening related wares, while food vendors sell meals to attendees. There are several free activities for chil-dren, and dogs are allowed. Event organizers schedule all-day musical acts for en-tertainment, as well as expert speakers giving lectures on gar-deningandlandscapingtechniques,from10a.m.to7:30p.m.on Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Sorticulture is free and it takes place at Legion Memo-rial Park at 145 Alverson Blvd. off West Marine View Drive in Everett. Normal festival hours are Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.Visitors are asked to park at Everett Community College’s North Broadway parking lot and take the bus that runs every 15-20 minutes. We have all heard the horror stories or experienced the frustra-tion of trying to make a big-ticket purchase with a salesperson that is more interested in closing the sale than in what you

want, need and are willing to spend. There are some simple steps that you, as the consumer, can take to ensure that your next big-ticket pur-chase experience is a good one. It does not matter if you are purchasing a car, boat, house or recreational vehicle, the following steps still apply.

Demanding Honesty Honesty is the most important part of purchasing a big-ticket item. You need to ask yourself, what is your budget, what are you looking for, how will you use the product and if you have a trade-in, what is the true value of your trade-in. As the consumer you must tell your sales-person the truth. Failure to be honest with your salesperson means that the salesperson cannot help you make a purchase and you will waste a lotof timelookingatcars, housesorRVsthatdonotfityourbudgetorneeds. Do not limit yourself by saying you will only look at new or only used product as your options will be drastically decreased and you may missoutontheproductthatexactlyfitsyourneedsandbudget.

The Meet & Greet You need to build a good rapport with your salesperson. Building a good rapport will allow for honest communication between you and the salesperson. Meeting and greeting is not for talking about product, it is for you to see if the salesperson is going to be compatible with you. As you make small talk, make sure they are being honest with you, lis-tening to what you are saying, have the product knowledge necessary to assist you in your purchase, and have a genuine concern for you.

Paying For your Big-Ticket Purchase When it comes to paying for your big-ticket purchase, buyers fall into one of four categories. You are going to be paying one of thefollowingways:cash, difference, finance, orspecialfinance.Cash would seem to be the simplest way to pay for a big-ticket item. When you set your budget remember that you will need to include taxes, license, title fees, accessories, pre-delivery services, document fees and a host of other fees. If you are going to pay cash, you need to set an “out the door budget” so they can factor this all into the cost of the products they show you. A difference buyer is very much like a cash buyer, you're looking to pay the difference between the value of your trade-in and the cost of the new item. Difference buyers also need to set an “out the door budget” and communicate this number to their salesperson to ensure that you stay within bud-get.Whenfinancingyourbig-ticketitem,youmustcommunicatefiveveryimportantpiecesof informationtoyoursalesperson:whatis your trade-in, how much do you owe on the trade-in, location where product will be licensed (for cars, boats & RVs), your down payment budget and your budget for monthly payments. The two most important pieces of information are the down payment bud-get and the monthly payments budget. The more you put down the lower your monthly payments will be. The most important part for thefinancebuyeristheamountof themonthlypayment.Peoplewhousespecialfinancingusuallyhavecreditchallenges.If youfallinto this category, let your salesperson know this. By sharing this information, you are making sure your salesperson will not show you something the banks will not loan you money for.

Shopping For your Big-Ticket item When shopping for a big-ticket item there is a simple rule to follow that will make your experience a better one. Do not go shopping without your spouse or partner. When you go shopping without your spouse or partner, you end up falling in love with something they do not like and are not will-ing to purchase. Save yourself time and hassle, shop together.

Product Demonstrations & Presentations If you have been honest with your salesperson the salesperson shouldbeabletoshowyouproductsthatwillfityourneeds, wantsand budget. During the product demonstrations and presentations, the salesperson should be giving you a “walk around presentation.” They are explaining features of the vehicle or house that meet your needs and wants. If the salesperson is explaining every little feature of the item or is not presenting you any features of the item you needtoaskforthemanagerorfindanewsalespersonbecausethissalesperson was not listening to you or is too lazy to give you a proper presentation. One of the best presentation styles is Interactive pre-sentation, this is where your salesperson identifies challenges youhave and offers you features that you may not have known you need-ed to deal with the challenge you are having. If you are purchasing a car or RV, the demonstration is not just about test driving the vehicle, it is about showing you how the features of the vehicle work.

Closing The Deal & Signing PaperworkThefirststepof theclosingprocessisthetrialclose.Thetrialcloseis where the salesperson asks you if this is the item for you. If you say yes, then you will go inside and start the process of purchasing the item. If you say no, then the salesperson will either take you to the next item to look at or start to take steps back to see where the salesperson lost you. Sometimes the salesperson will have another product to show youorwillgetanothersalespersonormanagertoansweryourques-tions. This is how they make sure all your needs are being met and theproductwillfityourneeds. If theproductyouwereshownistheone you want to purchase, then you will start the write-up or offer to purchase phase. If all steps before this have been completed correctly, then this is the simplest step of all. The reason this step is so easy is because you have already told the salesperson what you need, what you can pay, and what you need the monthly payments to be. After the write-up or offer to purchase is accepted by both parties, you will moveon to signingcontractswith thebusinessorfinancemanager. All financial documents shouldhave the truth in lending laws fullydisclosed and all the terms that have been agreed upon should be in writing.Businessorfinancemanagersworkforyouasyourrepresenta-tive to the banks. Delivery & After Sale Follow-up The delivery process is where you learn about every feature of your new car or RV. During the demonstration and presentation stage you were deciding if you liked the features, during the de-livery process you are learning how to use the features. The goal of the delivery process is not to just give you the keys and wave you off. The goal is for you to leave with a working knowledge of your new product. Last but not least is the introduction to the parts and service department. You should leave the dealership with names and contact information of people you can call if you need assistance. As hard as it is to find professional salespeople, it is very hard to find good customers. Many customers have had bad experiences at other places and with other salespeople and take that out on other salespeople. If you have had a bad expe-rience, you must leave your anger and frustration behind when you go to the next salesperson or dealership. If you have a great experience, the best way you can thank your salesperson is to give them a referral. Purchasing a big-ticket item can be a very enjoy-able process if you follow the steps listed above. By demanding honesty, finding a salesperson that meets your needs and shop-ping with your wants, needs and budget in mind, you can take the stress and worry out of purchasing a big-ticket item.

Are you sick?Medical laboratory identification of abnor-malities in a sample of your blood can serve many useful healthcare purposes. If you are ill, the blood analysis may

help determine not only the condition responsible for symptoms but possibly the cause as in the case of an infection. For many allergic and arthritic diseases, the newer technologies for blood analysis may provide an understanding of the way and extent to which the disease is affecting you. Research has found that abnor-malities in the immune system play a key role in many diseases, particularlyinthefieldsof allergyandrheumatology(arthritisandrheumatism).

Examplesinthefieldof allergyincludeanaphylaxis(acutelife-threatening allergic reaction), allergic rhinitis (hay fever), asthma, eczema, insect sting anaphylaxis, and food and drug allergies. The immune systems of people with these allergic conditions make an-tibodies,particularlyof theIgEclass,thatreactinaspecifictar-geted manner against certain environmental substances resulting in allergic symptoms.

On the other hand, autoimmunity in which a person’s immune system attacks its own body components, normally and otherwise recognized as “self ” and tolerated, seems to be the important mechanism in connective tissues diseases such as rheumatoid ar-thritis, lupus, scleroderma, polymyositis, most thyroid diseases, type 1 diabetes mellitus, and celiac disease to name a few.

Humanplasma(liquidportionof thebloodwithoutthebloodcells), donated by patients with these diseases, is needed not only for basic medical research to understand better how these diseases work, but also to serve as positive “controls” in the test kits that clinical (medical) laboratories use when performing a diagnos-tic test on a patient’s blood. Also, some of the plasma is used by governmental regulatory agencies such as the FDA in an effort to standardizetestsandforproficiencytestingof medicallaborato-ries,requiredforcompetencycertification.

Patients with these allergic and autoimmune conditions who have a high level of disease-associated antibody may volunteer to do-nate plasma. The procedure entails placement of an intravenous (IV) access in the forearm through which plasma is automatically extracted by a machine. The entire process generally takes about an hour. The only minor discomfort is the initial needle stick to place the IV, which is painless once in place. FDA regulations al-low for a maximum donation of two units of plasma twice weekly. Theactualfrequencyof plasmadonationcanbelessandisbasedon how big the research need is for that individual’s plasma which determines how often the donor is invited to donate. Certainly, the donor’s willingness to donate is the prime factor as the program is entirely voluntary.

There are actually very few plasma draw centers specializing in this type of research collection program, but they are discoverable through the various internet search engines and print media. The eight Junior Royalty candidates and 11 Senior Roy-alty candidates will be judged not only by their speeches and inter-views, but also by their academic performance and community ser-vice, as part of what Maryfest Co-Vice President-Elect Angie Miller deemed “a focus on citizenship.” From there, the fun kicks off in the summer with Kids Day at Asbery Field, which will feature the return of Disney Radio, this time with a full entertainment package that hasn’t been part of their previous appearances at the Strawberry Festival. Miller added that the day’s free activities should appeal to both kids and adults, as they will feature sports and corporate mascots, plus the “Reptile Man” bearing crates of his scaly friends to show off. The Fashion Show at Leifer Manor on Tuesday, June 11, will again feature amateur models from the community sporting outfitsfromlocalbusinesses,whiletheTalentShowintheMarys-ville-Pilchuck High School auditorium on Thursday, June 13, will again feature as many as 30 vocalists, instrumentalists, dancers and occasionally even aspiring comedians. At the 2012 Arlington Fly-In’s warbird and military history area, Dave and Betty Ruckhaber donned the actual dress uniforms of a B-17 squadron leader and an Army flight nurse, respectively, who served in World War II.

Arlington Fly-In offers fun for the entire familyThefirstthingthatArlingtonFly-InExecutiveDirectorBar-

bara Tolbert will readily acknowledge is that, yes, the annual Fly-In at the Arlington Municipal Airport is shorter by one

day this year. “We had to keep up with the economic times on that one,” Tolbert said of the 2013 Fly-In, which runs from Thursday, July 11, through Saturday, July 13. “It’s easier for pilots, vendors and exhibi-tors to come by and visit. They can cut down on their budgets a bit. We’ll still have the same amount of activities this year, but within three days instead of four.” Asalways, thefirstdayof theFly-InwillopenwithKidsDay, during which large groups of children will be able to take ad-vantageof activitiessuchastheever-popularminiatureflightsimu-lators, which the Fly-In purchased from the Museum of Flight, and which have drawn some of the longest lines of kids at the Fly-In ever since. “The Robotics Clubs have also started attracting some attention,” Tolbert said of the high school teams of robot-build-ers, which started with Arlington before other area schools started bringing their own creations to the Fly-In. “The STEM curriculum is so important to this region, as steeped as it is in aerospace, and being offered the chance to take the controls of a robot by a high school student is so exciting for the younger kids. All those kids are the future of our workforce.” Regardless of which day attendees stop by the Arlington Municipal Airport during the Fly-In, they can expect to be treated toa2p.m.airshowandanairfieldblanketedbywhatTolbertex-pects could be as many as 1,000 aircraft this year, although she ad-mitted that last year only saw 700 touch down and park on the grass,

due to “severely inclement weather.” WhileTolbert crosses her fingers for sunnier skies, she’salso stillfiguringoutwhichdayof her shortenedFly-In schedulewould work best to serve as Military Day, complete with the parade of authentic military vehicles. Regardless of when Military Day oc-cursorwhentheFly-Instartsandfinishes,shenotedthatthereplicafighter pilots tend to spend thewholeweek inArlington anyway, having come from Oregon, California and even Canada. Last year’s car show at the Fly-In was such a hit, drawing 60 cars, that Tolbert expects to expand it to as many as 250 cars this year, complete with live music to enhance the experience. The annual Balloon Glow is tentatively scheduled for the evening of July 13 this year. Although the Fly-In typically averages betweenfourtofivehotairballoons,shebelievesthesizeandspec-tacle of those that do show up is more than impressive enough. “They look so beautiful, and most people don’t realize how close you can get,” Tolbert said. “You can really get right up close to the baskets and talk to the pilots about their balloons.” The Fly-In offers an immersive experience for pilots and visitors by land alike, since its camping area affords plenty of ground for the tents and RVs of those who want to wake up with the Fly-In in the morning and go to sleep with it at night. “People are already reserving their spots in the camping area,” Tolbert said. “We have people who, as they’re packing up their gear to go home at the end of the Fly-In, ask if they can re-serve their spots again for the following year.” To register your camping spot and stay up-to-date with the Fly-In’slatestschedulesof events,logontowww.arlingtonflyin.org.

A few weeks ago, while driving the old Monroe-Snohomish Highway I saw a placard inviting me (well, actually, any-one) to a model airplane event. My curiosity took me

back through 50 acres of private land owned by Mark Hanson, a real pilot and model plane enthusiast. Mark has created the Cas-cadeFamilyAirfield,oneof thebestkept18-year-old secrets inSnohomish County. The range of peoplewho enjoy this site include Boeing executives and University of Washington students doing map train experiments. Besides meet-ing Mark, with piercing pilots blue eyes, a visitor may well run into his friend, world-famous hydroplane racer Dave Vlowark. Millionaires and common folk go there to eat, drink and indulge in this interesting sport. Flying, Mark contends, also brings out the best in the young video gamer. It allows him or her to use cutting-edge art technology, while getting a rush flying airplanes at 40 mph or more. For those of us who think outdoor play needs to be combined with the younger genera-tion’s desire to experience speed, this is the perfect combination.

Morethan75yearsago,volunteerfirefightersinthesmallWashington town of Burlington decided to organize a festival to raise enough money to pay their cash-strapped

station’s bills for the next year. Their event, which they called the Strawberry Festival, paid off. It featured a parade, carnival and makeshift gambling hall, all of which helped bring in money. The effort sparked an annual tradition — known today as Berry Dairy Days — that continues as a celebration of Burlington’s agriculture and dairy industries. Duane Stowe, a longtime Burlington business owner whose family has been part of the town for more than 70 years, said Berry Dairy Days attracts visitors to the area’s small-town atmosphere and also rekindles local residents’ connections with their neighbors. “It is our major event for the whole community,” Stowe said. “All the people who grew up here — a lot of them make efforts to come back to see their old friends.” The next Berry Dairy Days are scheduled from June 13-16. Events begin with a strawberry shortcake sale — a popular draw that continues through the entire festival in various locations —alongFairhavenAvenue, whichisusuallyblockedoff totraffictoaccommodate the crowds. Festivities also include a three-day carnival in the parking lot of Cascade Mall, located just off Interstate 5. On the evening of June 15, Skagit River Park hosts a salmon barbecuewithlivemusicandafireworksshow, presentedbythecityof Burlington. Saturday is the main event, with a variety of activities held all day long: an early morning road run and a 3-on-3 basket-

ball tournament,agrandparade,atractorandantiquefarmequip-ment show, as well as a major festival in Burlington’s Maiben Park featuring live music, pony rides for kids, food and commercial vendors. The festival culminates the following day with more basketball and the “Berry Cool” Car Show down Fairhaven Avenue. Nancy Rytand, the director of development for the Burl-ington Chamber of Commerce, said most editions of Berry Dairy Dayssticktothetried-and-trueformatof parades, fireworksand,of course, shortcake. The Burlington chamber coordinates the festival each year. Rytand said the events celebrate important elements of the town’s agricultural history. It also brings a peak in Burlington’s mid-summer tourism, an important economic driver for merchants and retailers in the small town. “Itgeneratesquiteabit[of tourism],”Rytandsaid.“Ho-tels are booked all weekend long.” For Stowe, Berry Dairy Days are also about honoring his-tory. Along with his wife, Arlene, Stowe led the festival’s parade last year as a grand marshal. The 2012 Berry Dairy Days celebration was the 75th edition of the event. Stowe, who still remembers the early years of the summer festival, said the parades have always been his favorite part. And while keeping true to tradition is an important aspect of Berry Dairy Days, Stowe said the various additions organizers havemadeover the years—fireworks, car shows, pony rides—have keep the event thriving each year for people who live in Burl-ington and those who visit. “It has to change,” Stowe said, “or it would die.”

There are millions of tulips growing in the Skagit River Valley and the festival offers display gardens — Tulip Town and Roozengaarde—andhundredsof acresof flowers, perfect if you want to buy your own bulbs or just take in the view. “The festival is a blast,” said Festival Executive Direc-tor Cindy Verge. “My favorite part of my job is getting to share something absolutely beautiful with people around the world.” The festival began as a three-day event in 1983 and has slowly grown over the years to incorporate dozens of activities as the central spring event for Mount Vernon and other nearby towns such as La Conner, Burlington and Sedro-Woolley. “Thebeautyof thefestivalisthatweonlyputonfiveevents,” said Verge. “Most are community organizations, local businesses and volunteers who organize the activities and fund-raisers. And that money stays in the community. The Kiwanis Clubwasabletobuildawaterparkwithbaseballfieldsandawetlands area with dollars raised during the Tulip Festival. Visitors to the festival can take advantage of Skagit Coun-

ty’s many art shows, wineries, boat tours, farm tours, helicopter tours, shopping and more. “A few years ago we put up a map of the United States to see where people came from,” said Verge. “We invited people to put a pushpin in the map to indicate where they are from, but pretty soon people were saying they weren’t on the map. We had 15 foreign countries handwritten that year. Since then, we’ve put up a world map. Last year we had visitors from 71 countries and 49 of the 50 states.” The festival is an international flower sensation andthere is no shortage of activities to try during the month-long event. It is important to remember that it is cool, wet and windy during April and most of the events take place outdoors where thefieldsaremuddyanduneven.Besuretocomepreparedwithrain gear and safe, stable shoes or boots — no heels. If you consider yourself a decent photographer, you can enter your favorite tulip photo for the Skagit Tulip Festival’s photo contest on Facebook. The winning shot will be published in the 2014 festival brochure. In honor of its 30th anniversary, festival organizers will be offering Facebook fans 30 days of priz-es for the 30 days in April that the festival is on. To download the current brochure, map and schedule visit www.TulipFestival.org or log onto www.facebook.com/sk-agitvalleytulipfestival.

Back in 1911, a conservation group called the Mount Baker Club decided such a feat would make a good publicity stunt in its effort to persuade the federal government to include

a portion of the North Cascades mountain range in the National Park System. Today, the annual Ski to Sea race — a 93-mile-long, multi-event competition that begins on the slopes of Mount Baker and ends on the shores of Bellingham Bay — continues the spirit of its rugged predecessor. While the mountain-scaling run is no more, Ski to Sea addstothecentury-oldtraditionbyincorporatinguniqueflavorsof the coastal and mountain living enjoyed by locals in the area. “It’s probably the best display of the recreational opportu-nity and geographic diversity in Whatcom County,” said Pete Coy, owner and race director of Ski to Sea. “It really does incorporate manyof thefinerqualitiesthatWhatcomhastooffer.” Ski to Sea’s 2013 edition will be held on May 26 — a cul-mination of several days of events in Bellingham, including a chil-dren’s race and parade, a community block party and the Ski to Sea Grand Parade, which is usually held just before the main event. The race itself is daunting for both professional athletes and “weekend warriors” who make up the hundreds of eight-mem-ber race teams that enter each year. Teams feature racers with varying degrees of athletic prowess, said Mel Monkelis, executive director of Whatcom Events, anonprofitgroupthatcoordinatestheevent. “It’soneof themostuniqueracesyoucanbein, inthatyou’re racing next to recreational athletes, couch potatoes and

Olympic athletes,” Monkelis said. “There’s not many races in the country you can do that in.” Competition starts with two legs at the Mount Baker Ski Area, a cross-country ski loop followed by one completed with downhill skis or snowboards. Itcontinuesthroughfiveadditionallegsthatbringracersoff the mountain and into the waters of Bellingham Bay. After ski-ing,running,bikingandcanoeing,thefinalracerforeachteamfin-ishes with a kayak sprint across the city’s coastline. Racerscrossthefinishlineandringalargebellplacedonthe shore near Bellingham’s Historic Fairhaven District. They are greeted there by thousands of cheering fans. Coy said the camaraderie shared among racers and spec-tators is a key element to each edition of Ski to Sea. The event is also one of Bellingham’s main summertime attractions to the outside world, both for visitors who come to watch and those who come to compete, he said. The number of Ski to Sea racers from outside Whatcom County grows every year, Coy said. In 2012, 63 percent of the com-petitors came from other regions of the world. Ski to Sea weekends are run each year by an army of about 1,100 volunteers, and the events generate $4 million to $5 million in economic activity for local hotels, restaurants and retail stores, Coy said. Monkelis said the annual tradition is one of the best ways for northwest Washington to show off its character and the recreational activities it offers all year-round. “This race represents us to the world,” he said.

Hundreds of cross-country skiers hit the first snowy stretch of the Ski to Sea race course in 2012. Ski to Sea is becoming increasingly popular to competitors from outside of Bellingham. Pete Coy, the race’s director, said 63 percent of the race teams in 2012 came from out of town.
