Personnel Decisions

• Position Assignments: Players will be assigned to the position that gives our team the best opportunity for success. Another consideration in the assignment of players to positions is how likely that player is to get on the field at that position. If a player is a backup at Position A and be a starter at Position B, then that player will be assigned to Position B. We will always consider what position a player desires to play, but ultimately that player will be placed where he has the best chance to get on the field and to help the team win.

• Team Placement: Players are placed on a team in which they will make the most positive contribution. Another factor in team placement is the development of the individual player. The coaches will place each player on the team that affords them the best opportunity to improve their skills.

• Football ability is the major factor in placement of players. Football ability is defined as the combination of a player’s physical talents, knowledge of assignments, effort and toughness. The players with the greatest football ability, as defined, will play at the highest level of play. This is regardless of age. Academic classification is not a determining factoring who gets to play.

• Maturity is the second factor in the placement of players. Maturity is defined as the ability to sacrifice a short-term pleasure, such as sleeping in during the summer, for a long-range goal, such as reaching the SHOWCASE. Mature athletes understand how important their efforts are to the team and prepare throughout the week to win on Friday night.

• Chronological age is the number of years you have been alive, mental age is the maturity level you have achieved in the years you have been alive. There are 16-year-old men and there are 40-year-old boys. Maturity is not determined by your chronological age.

• Everyone on our team has an important role in our success. Not everyone can start, but all of our players are equally important to our team. It is important that all players know their roles and take these very seriously.

Health & Safety• The theme is: well-hydrated, well-rested and well-nourished! • BISD has heat guidelines for both athletics and band. We have

a chart we follow that is based on the actual air temperature and the heat index. When the temp. or humidity reaches a certain point we must modify our practices and if the heat continues to rise we must cancel practices. Our number one concern is the safety of all our athletes and coaches. At practices water will be available whenever an athlete needs a drink. We will have several water breaks scheduled but most importantly kids must know they can get a drink anytime they need one. The key is to not get dehydrated. Once a kid feels thirsty at practice dehydration has already begun. They need to stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking plenty of water. This will be especially important once school begins for our 8th graders who will be practicing after school. Also make sure they are not drinking any sodas. Sodas and energy drinks do not mix well with heat.-

Health & Safety

• Injuries:

• Please see trainer at high school unless it is an emergency situation.

• Coach Broxterman sees athletes starting at 6:30 AM at the HS field house.

• Dressing Out / Missing Practice• Athletes must dress out daily. Failure to dress out properly will result in a loss of playing

time (see handbook).

• NOTE: Even injured and/or ill athletes are required to be dressed out.

• We require if an athlete is out of practice for two days because of an injury or sickness that they have a doctor’s note if they do not participate on the third day.

• Please do not send a note with your student requesting them to sit out of practice unless it us an urgent problem that needs to be looked at by the school nurse. When the need does arise though, the note must be signed by a parent with a phone number.

• If a student misses more than 5 practices without a valid excuse they may be removed from a team sport and placed in the off-season program. A student not participating in more than 5 days of off-season may be removed from athletics.

North Richland Athletics

• Grades are priority number one!!• If an athlete has below a 70 on a report card they are

ineligible to play for three weeks (UIL rule). They will be expected to practice as normal.

• Any athlete with a 75 or below in any class will be assigned Friday Sun Rise Tutorials at 6:00 AM in the locker room.

• Academically, if an athlete fails any class two six weeks grading periods in a row they may be removed from athletics.

Parent Expectations

• The following should be kept in mind throughout the season:• -During games, parents must respect the calls made by the officials. The referees

and our school administration reserve the right to remove anyone from our building if their behavior becomes inappropriate. Remember these are 12 and 13 year old kids.

• -Appropriate language must be used at all times and critical comments will not be directed to opposing teams.

• -If you have a concern or complaint after a game please schedule a meeting with the coach at a later date.

• -Win or lose, athletes should be congratulated on both sides.• -After a game please pick your child up in a timely manner. If you wish for your child

to ride home with you from the game, you must sign them out with an assigned coach. If they ride the bus back to the school please pick them up upon the bus’ arrival.
