the project site located at 17-49 Saunders Street, Railway Estate, Townsville.

It is envisaged that this project will provide the catalyst needed to generate renewed interest and economic activity in and around the Townsville CBD.

This project will provide numerous benefits for Townsville and the region, including:• Expansion of North Queensland infrastructure• Job creation and flow-on economic benefits• Stimulation of urban renewal• Enhancement of North Queensland liveability

Raising the profile of the NQ region is expected to result in:• Investment in other parts of North Queensland• Increasing the regions sporting and events capability• Attraction of more domestic and international visitors to

Townsville.

The construction of the project will be delivered by Watpac who has been selected as the managing contractor for the NQS project utilising a design and construction management contract.

Project Updates The stadium is on track to be ready to host the Sir Elton John concert (29 February 2020) and the 2020 National Rugby League Premiership Season.

Stadium Roof Being InstalledThe stadium roof is nearing completion. Once complete, the pandanus-inspired roof will provide shade cover to 75% of the seats. The roof has been specifically designed for Townsville’s cyclonic conditions. The peaked sections of the roof are formed by 36 steel trusses that each have a

unique geometry. A durable fabric, which is weather-, fire- and UV-resistant, is fitted over the trusses. Flat metal infills sections are installed between each truss.

EOIs for Johnathan Thurston Statue ClosedA bronze statue immortalising NRL legend Johnathan Thurston will stand in the northern plaza of the stadium. It will honour his contribution to rugby league and acknowledge the significant role he plays in the North Queensland community.

A local sculptor, Jane Hawkins was announced as the winning artist chosen to sculpt the JT Statue. She will be working with a foundry in Brisbane to produce the final bronze statue to be installed in the northern entry plaza in February 2020.

Artwork ‘Warmth’ is ComingArtwork ‘Warmth’ will take pride of place at the stadium, on permanent display in the southern entry plaza. The durable outdoor sculpture will feature a 2-metre high piece of curved steel. The names of selected North Queensland places and traditional owner groups will be laser-cut to form a winding river design along the artwork. This fictitious river connects all North Queensland as people have always settled or gathered around water.

With its vibrant colour and circular wrap form, the sculpture aims to portray the embrace and continual warmth shown when the North Queensland people came together to help each other after the devastation of the early-2019 monsoonal event in Townsville.

Townsville’s own Alison McDonald has been commissioned to deliver the artwork in time for the stadium’s opening in February 2020.
