Below is a list of some of our Term 1 activities:
• Information meetings conducted to provide parents the opportunity to meet teachers and to learn more about class, specialist and instrumental learning programs;
• P & C Welcome Sausage Sizzle was well attended by students, parents and staff members;
• Case conferences and planning meetings held with parents and specialist personnel to support students at risk and develop individual education plans;
• Student councilors, faction leaders and members of the Sustainability Committee were selected for Semester 1;
• Assessment programs were implemented and analysed across the school to identify students and areas of need;
• The On-entry assessment interviews were administered to all Pre-primary students;
• Phonemic Awareness program for Year 1 students commenced with parent helpers;
• Weekly drama lessons conducted with Year 1 – 7 students by National Institute of Dramatic Arts;
• 51 students participated in weekly instrumental music lessons and 52 students joined the choir for 2013;
• PEAC off-site and online extension programs commenced;
• Staff developed plans to address school priority areas and participated in relevant professional learning e.g. National Quality Standards in Early Childhood Education, You Can Do It program
• Students participated in activities to support their learning e.g. Ride to School Day, Suitcase Stories performance, North Perth Walking Tour (Rooms 6 and 1),

TERM 2 STAFFING At the beginning of the year I provided a Staff List which indicated that some teachers had been appointed for Term 1 while permanent staff members were on leave. At the time of publication, no information was available regarding the status of these teachers for Term 2.
ASSEMBLY At assembly last week the students in Room 14 performed items on cyber bullying and how to be safe online.
Congratulations boys and girls on your entertaining and informative performance.
ROAD SAFETY There have been three incidents during the past fortnight when children from our school have narrowly missed being hit by cars. Please consider the following:
 Young children walking, riding or using their scooters may be difficult to see, especially by vehicles reversing out of driveways. Please remind children to take care when walking to and from school and consider increasing their visibility e.g. tall flag on bike, fluro raincoat.
 Walking through the staff car park instead of using the footpath places children in a high risk situation as there is limited visibility in this area, especially when cars are reversing. Children sometimes take a short cut through the staff car park and are not visible until they suddenly emerge without warning from between the parked cars. Please do not walk through this area as it teaches children an unsafe practice which places them at risk.
 Taking a short-cut through the turning circle in Albert Street instead of walking on the footpath is a dangerous practice for children as drivers are not expecting them to step in front of their vehicle. Please remind your child to always use the footpath in this area.
Parents are requested to be vigilant when driving around the school so we can ensure our children remain safe.
SAFE TO SCHOOL It is recommended all parents talk regularly with their children about how to stay safe while walking to and from school. The following suggestions distributed by the North Metropolitan Education Regional Office may be helpful. Always travel in company. Walk on the footpath on the right side of the road so you face oncoming traffic. Wherever possible, leave space between you and the roadway. Stay in areas that are well lit. Stay in view – avoid going into areas that are hidden from view (such as parkland bush, or behind
shopping centres) and plan trips to avoid such locations. Be alert – earphones and headphones can reduce your awareness considerably. If you have a mobile phone, have it turned on and ready to dial an emergency number. If a passing car stops nearby, never get too close. Do not hesitate to run from a situation in which you feel at risk. Report suspicious behaviour to parents, school and the police (call 000 in an emergency or 1800
333 000 to reach Crime Stoppers), noting number plates of cars and/or clothing or distinguishing features of individuals.
SCHOOL WATCH The school sporting facilities are regularly used after-hours by students and members of the community. Generally it is felt that by allowing community members to access the basketball courts people with ill intentions will move to another location rather than be seen damaging the school.
Unfortunately, the school is regularly being misused by some people. They leave rubbish (e.g. take-away food containers, bottles and casks), break bottles on the bitumen, damage property (e.g. outdoor furniture, veggie gardens) and or break into the toilets. This is expensive and inconveniences students, staff members and local families.
We desperately need the support of our school community to help protect our school.
What to look for?
• The most important times for you to be vigilant are during weekends and school holidays as the school is unattended and therefore more vulnerable than usual to crime.
• Keep in mind that our school site is large with multiple "blind spots". If you hear unusual noises from within the school, such as glass breaking or banging noises, this might mean people are up to no good.
• Watch for groups "hanging around" on school grounds. This should not occur and can be one of the starting points for crime to occur.
• If you live near our school and see or hear suspicious behaviour, immediately telephone: School Watch Security on 1800 177 777
Police on 131 444 Your assistance in protecting our school is appreciated.
UNIFORM SHOP The Uniform Shop will be open on the following days in Term 2 Thursday 1 May – 2.30- 3.00pm Thursday 22 May – 8.30-9.00 am Thursday 12 June – 2.30- 3.00pm Thursday 3 July – 8.30-9.00am
EARLY CHILDHOOD BUSY BEE A big thank you to the wonderful early childhood parents who gave up their usual Sunday sleep-in or breakfast in bed last weekend to paint the cubby and work in the garden. The timing of the busy bee was very fortunate as we discovered some unwelcome visitors snacking on the cubby and will now treat it for termites to protect it from further
damage.

WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY
World Autism Day is a United Nations day celebrating the potential of people with Autism. There are tens of millions of people world-wide that have this, or other closely related disorders which are diagnostically categorised as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and share the same core symptoms. Autism is a complex, life-long developmental disability which is neurobiological in origin. Approximately one in every 160 children in Australia is diagnosed with an autistic disorder.
People with Autism have difficulties in three main areas; impaired social relating, impaired communication and restrictive and repetitive behaviours and interests. These difficulties may present as: ◊ Impaired social interaction eg a lack of spontaneous interest in sharing activities or interests with
others; or lack of appropriate social responsiveness. ◊ Lack of make-believe play. ◊ Absence of language; or echoing of language; or language used in a very literal way. ◊ Impaired ability to initiate or sustain a conversation. ◊ Distress, or difficulty, with change to a routine. ◊ Narrow and restricted range of interests e.g. may have a preoccupation with
an object; may only be interested in lining up objects or making collections of particular items; may only be interested in a single topic or amassing facts about a single interest.
Parent Nutrition Information Session You are invited to come along and share ideas, sample great tasting healthy snacks and take home some fantastic resources and a cookbook. Everyone attending will go in the draw to win a box of fresh fruit and vegetables. We will cover: The Traffic Light system of rating food and drinks for school canteens.
 Sharing tips on how to provide healthy lunch box items.
 Healthy lunch box snack ideas that kids will love. Easy after school snacks kids can make.
