North Moreton News Issue 110 September 2015 2015 Air Pageant Peter and Polly Vacher generously hosted their fourth Air Pageant and Pig Roast on 5th July. It was a huge success. A large crowd welcomed back some old friends. Gerry Sturgess flew his glider to the sound of Bach as gracefully as ever - and his family have made a delightful YouTube video of the day. Stu Goldspink thrilled us in his Pitts Special, and Carl Schofield displayed the Hurricane impressively. Peter Teichman provided a contrast with his very special Spitfire, which is the last airworthy photo reconnaissance version and so is very fast indeed. We were all glad that the weather was good enough to see Mark Miller flying his DH Rapide, which has a spruce and plywood frame and has been lovingly restored over very many years. Andy Jarvis and his colleagues flew a great variety of model aircraft with much skill; and we were enter- tained by a splendid group of young Dixieland musicians from the County Music Service. There was some stunning flying of a solo Tiger Moth by Robin Russell, and the climax of the day was the dramatic display by eight Tiger Moths from the Tiger Nine team. The Air Ambulance joined us and we were reminded yet again of its im- portance when it was called out to deal with an incident. Since 2009 the four Air Pageants have raised very nearly £60,000, split between the Air Ambulance and much needed support for building work at the parish church. The Air Cadets and many volunteers have contributed to the success of the occasions, but we all owe a huge debt to Peter and Polly Vacher, not only for sharing the Hurricane with us but for their remarkable commitment to making all four events happen. 2015 Air Pageant

Peter and Polly Vacher generously hosted their fourth Air Pageant and Pig

Roast on 5th July. It was a huge success.

A large crowd welcomed back some old friends. Gerry Sturgess flew his

glider to the sound of Bach as gracefully as ever - and his family have

made a delightful YouTube video of the day. Stu Goldspink thrilled us in

his Pitts Special, and Carl Schofield displayed the Hurricane impressively.

Peter Teichman provided a contrast with his very special Spitfire, which is

the last airworthy photo reconnaissance version and so is very fast indeed.

We were all glad that the weather was good enough to see Mark Miller

flying his DH Rapide, which has a spruce and plywood frame and has been

lovingly restored over very many years. Andy Jarvis and his colleagues

flew a great variety of model aircraft with much skill; and we were enter-

tained by a splendid group of young Dixieland musicians from the County

Music Service.

There was some stunning flying of a solo Tiger Moth by Robin Russell,

and the climax of the day was the dramatic display by eight Tiger Moths

from the Tiger Nine team.

The Air Ambulance joined us and we were reminded yet again of its im-

portance when it was called out to deal with an incident.

Since 2009 the four Air Pageants have raised very nearly £60,000, split

between the Air Ambulance and much needed support for building work at

the parish church. The Air Cadets and many volunteers have contributed to

the success of the occasions, but we all owe a huge debt to Peter and Polly

Vacher, not only for sharing the Hurricane with us but for their remarkable

commitment to making all four events happen.

North Moreton Parish Council

Well-kept village

It has been a pleasure over the summer to sit in the Rec., watching the cricket and hearing the compliments of visitors, who think we’re lucky to have such an idyllic scene on our doorsteps. Credit for this must go to our contractors, Azalea Landscapes (Jonny Yaxley and Will Macdonald), and our voluntary recreation ground and paths warden, Iain Craigie.

As a team with strong connections to the village and the Cricket Club, Jonny and Will take personal pride in making the Rec. and the Rushcroft as attractive as possible, and looking after the patches of wildflowers and trees the PC incon-siderately place in the path of the mowers. This summer they have widened the entrance to the Rec. from the Bear car park, to make it more pushchair- and wheelchair- friendly. Iain has been strimming verges, keeping the paths clear of nettles and overhanging hedges, and, at his own expense, has made a replace-ment pedestrian gate for the Bear Lane entrance.

The Parish Council is very grateful for all their efforts.

Incidentally, the Bear Lane vehicle gate should be locked at all times when the Rec. isn’t in use. If you find it open at other times, please report this to the Cricket Club or Parish Council.

Dog poo – again!

Unfortunately, yet again, the idyllic scene is being spoilt by the large number of large dog poos on paths, pavements, and the Rec., so please don’t let your hound roam unattended through the village, and keep an eye on its movements, in all senses, whilst out walking!

Millennium Wood

At the top of Dunsomer Hill, near the railway bridge, is an area of woodland planted by children from South Moreton School to mark the Millennium. The wood is now within North Moreton parish, but is still owned and looked after by South Moreton Parish Council. Over the years, it has become an attractive nature reserve, with a footpath round the edge. Public access is allowed.

Consultation on proposed changes to subsidised bus services

Oxfordshire County Council would like your views on service change proposals for subsidised bus services (including our 95 service) and Dial-a-Ride, and have set up an online consultation which can be accessed at www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/stconsultation. Feedback forms and consultation documents are also available at libraries, or from the Parish Council. .

The council needs to save more than £6 million on supported transport services. They can save money by running existing services more efficiently, but that is not enough. Savings will also have to come from reducing the current £4 mil-lion a year the council pays in bus subsidies and to run the Dial-a-Ride service.

Proposals for saving money include:

Subsidised buses - Withdrawing bus subsidies altogether

Subsidised buses - Reducing funding to subsidised bus services - and adopting the principle of prioritising, where possible, services most likely to be used by the elderly and disabled

Dial-a-Ride - Ending direct funding of the Dial-a-Ride service - encourag-ing community transport groups across the county to deliver a replacement ser-vice.

The council would like to know whether you agree or not with each proposal, including what you think the likely impact will be and how they might be able to minimise this. They would also welcome your suggestions for improving community travel in Oxfordshire.

The public consultation closes at midnight on 14 September.

Buses to Wallingford

The bus to Wallingford now runs twice a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays, stopping at the bus shelter at 11.02 and returning from Wallingford at 13.30 (reaching North Moreton at 13.46). This service is operated by the ITU fleet of Oxfordshire County Council. Ros Templeman, Chairman, NMPC

Applications are invited from young persons aged be-tween 17 and 21 whose family has been resident in North Moreton for a minimum of one year and who has not already received a book grant. The grants will be for £75 per person, subject to the number of applications received in any one year.

North & South Moreton WI

At the meeting in June, Clive Holmes entertained us with a very amusing ac-count of his life entitled “From Pauper to Priest’. Also in June, members joined other WI members at the Corn Exchange, Wallingford, for a live screening of the Centenary AGM. This was at the Royal Albert Hall and was attended by the Queen and other members of the Royal Family. Lucy Worsley gave an excellent talk on the history of the WI, and Tanni Grey-Thompson’s account on her life as an extremely successful disabled sportswoman and now as a politician in the House of Lords, was awe-inspiring.

The July Garden Meeting was held in Wendy Murray’s lovely garden. The weather was kind and members were given the chance to view the progress of the banner being made in time for the service in Oxford in September. The ban-ner committee have worked extremely hard and have managed to incorporate contributions from all members. It will be paraded at the special service marking the centenary at Christchurch Cathedral on September 15th. Also at this meeting, Linda Brown told us about her visit the NFWI Centenary Garden Party at Buck-ingham Palace, which she enjoyed immensely!

The outing in August was a visit to Longstock Water Gardens. Members and guests had a very enjoyable day exploring these beautiful gardens. The weather was good too, always an added bonus!

There have been several events attended by members this summer, including a talk by Isla St Claire at Didcot Civic Hall, a jam making course and also an OFWI Weekend, both at Denman College.

Kate Beswick will be demonstrating how to make Corn Dollies at our September meeting and the Harvest Supper in October will be a special occasion as we are inviting as many former members as we can get hold of to share not only the supper, but hopefully some of the memories they have of their time as members of our WI. This will be our way of celebrating this special centenary year. Bar-bara Hately will be the speaker at the November meeting. Her talk is about the History of Nursery Rhymes. She has visited us before and we look forward to hearing her again.

New members and guests are always welcome to come and join us. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month, usually at North Moreton Village Hall. Please telephone Liz Elliot on 812562 for more information.

CONCERT AND DINNER

Friday 23th October and Saturday 24th October 2015

Come and join us for an evening of fun and entertainment! Patricia Love-land and Polly Vacher extend a warm invitation to join them for an even-ing of music for two pianos. This will culminate with a performance of Saint-Saens 'Carnival of the Animals' when they will be joined by Rosie Bruce, violin; Tom Bruce, percussion; Sarah Loveland, clarinet; Tirke Lin-nemann, 'cello and our own Heather McGregor (Mrs Moneypenny), narra-tor.

The concert starts at 7.30 p.m. with the dinner starter being served in the interval. After the concert the main course and desserts will be served.

This is a 'soiree' in the true sense of the word, and how music used to be made before the days of recording studios.

Patricia and Polly have played together for over thirty years, but this con-cert will be very special as it is their 'Swan Song' and entirely appropriate as the penultimate piece in the Carnival is the famous 'Swan'!

The evening will raise funds for a charity called 'My Cancer, My Choices' which is a charity started by Patricia's daughter Lizzie and has now been adopted by the NHS in Reading. The Charity offers people with cancer the chance to experience alternative medicines such as acupuncture and mas-sage, but more importantly gives a lot of support through what is often a very difficult time in someone's life. The funds will be equally divided be-tween this and our own Church Amenities Fund. The alterations and im-provements to our church fabric have been a long process but are now nearing completion so this will help towards the final few thousand still needed.

What better way to raise funds – by having a fun evening out. DON'T MISS IT! For details and tickets please contact Polly Vacher at [email protected].

Playground Action Group

The PAG are looking forward to the installation of new playground equip-ment, currently planned to commence on 14th September 2015. New equipment will include a multi-play climbing frame, basket swing, toddlers tower, seesaw, tractor & trailer, parrot's walk, climbing net, tunnel and a zip wire. It is hoped that this work will be completed by early to mid October. There will clearly be much disruption to the playground area, so please remain clear of the building works to ensure the contractors com-plete their work in the shortest possible timeframe.

The PAG will once again be presenting the very popular Circus Berzer-cus (Part 2 - Funny Business - comedy & chaos for ALL the family) at 3 p.m. on Sunday 13th September. The limited tickets are selling FAST so don't miss out.... For more information see the advert or email [email protected].

Many thanks again to everyone who has supported the PAG over the past two years. We have managed to secure over £40,000 from both grant fund-ing and fundraising, which will hopefully benefit the village children for many years to come. David Powell

Moreton Cricket Club

It's September already and the end of the cricket season is approaching fast. However, we can look back on a very successful season with a record number of members enabling us to consistently get full sides out through-out the season; something that we have struggled with in the past. The ladies’ and junior teams have been a great success again thanks to chair-man Tim and the junior coaching team lead by Ed and Rowan.

The weather managed to disrupt the highlight of the season, the Beer and Cricket Festival, but both the Corporate Day on Thursday and the 6-a-side competition on Saturday went ahead and proved to be very successful and enjoyable days. The 6-a-side competition was eventually won by Moreton 'A', so the trophy remains in the village.

The club dinner is due to be held in The Bear on the 2nd October and the club Open Evening on the 11th September at 6 p.m. when the MCC wel-comes members and supporters to a complimentary BBQ on The Croft..... If you want to know more about the club, please come and join us.

Conservation of Gorillas in the Gabon

Conservation of gorillas in The Gabon is an unusual subject for any village I would think, but at North Moreton, I am sure there will be a lot of you who would like to hear more. Kate Abernethy has worked with her husband in The Gabon for some years and has kindly offered to talk to us about their work. The evening will begin with drinks and light supper and will be fol-lowed by her talk. I am sure Kate will answer any questions you may have.

The date is North Moreton village hall on Friday 11th September, begin-ning at 7.30 p.m. Tickets to include food and drink £10 each. There will be a raffle.

Ride and Stride

On Saturday 12th September All Saints at North Moreton will be welcom-ing anyone who wants to visit. It is the annual cycle ride (you may walk if you prefer) organised by the Oxfordshire Historic Church’s Trust. Many churches in the area and beyond take part in this event, to raise funds for their local churches.

It is a great day out anyway. For sponsorship forms and more information, including a list of participating churches, please contact Beryl Jones, 01235 510035 Email: [email protected].

Pump Hunt for Private Sewage Station Owners

Thames Water is appealing to customers to help identify privately owned sewage pumping stations.

New legislation means sewage pumping stations, which power wastewater away from properties and out into the public sewer pipe network, currently owned and maintained by customers will become legally owned and oper-ated by the local water company.

The pumping stations are found in all shapes and sizes, and can be in plac-es where there are a number of properties needing to connect to the public sewer network. Customers will know they have one as they’ll be paying to maintain and power them.

Anyone with a private pumping station can make Thames Water aware at thameswater.co.uk/pumphunt.

Proposed Changes to Household Recycling Centres

Oxfordshire County Council has launched a public consultation into their proposals to reduce household recycling centres in the county from seven to three or four and to reduce opening hours, in a bid to save £350,000 from the budget by 2017/18.

You can find out more and express your views by visiting the County Council website. The consultation runs until 5th October.
