Important Immunization Requirement for

Middle School

The State of Iowa now requires a TDAP vaccination for

all students entering 7th grade. Tdap is a booster vac-

cine for older children, adolescents, and adults. It safely

protects against 3 dangerous diseases: tetanus, diph-

theria, and whooping cough (also called pertussis). This

requirement will help protect your child and others in

school and the community from whooping cough.

All 7th grade students will need to provide proof of re-

ceiving the Tdap vaccination before enrolling for school

in August 2017. Many students may have already re-

ceived this immunization. Please be sure to provide the

school with an updated immunization record if your stu-

dent has already received the immunization or if they

receive it during this school year. Records may be faxed

to North Middle at 277-5941.

News from the school

nurse, Julie Thiele:

Nutrition Tip: Kid-Friendly Veggies and Fruits

Delicious Dippers: Kids love to dip their foods. Whip up a quick dip for veggies with yogurt and seasonings such as herbs or garlic. Serve with raw vegetables like broccoli, carrots, or cauliflower. Fruit chunks go great with a yogurt and cinnamon or vanilla dip.

Personalized Pizzas: Set up a pizza-making station in the kitchen. Use whole-wheat English muffins, bagels, or pita bread as the crust. Have tomato sauce, low-fat cheese, and cut-up vegetables or fruits for toppings. Let kids choose their own favorites. Then pop the pizzas into the oven to warm.

Fruity Peanut Butterfly: Start with carrot sticks or celery for the body. Attach wings made of thinly sliced apples with peanut butter and decorate with halved grapes or dried fruit.

Homemade Trail Mix: Skip the pre-made trail mix and make your own. Use your favorite nuts and dried fruits, such as unsalted peanuts, cashews, walnuts, or sunflower seeds mixed with dried apples, pineapple, cherries, apricots, or raisins. Add whole-grain cereals to the mix too.

Potato Person: Decorate half a baked potato. Use sliced cherry tomatoes, peas, and low -fat cheese on the potato to make a funny face.

Any 8th Grade Athlete (Male/Female) that is interested in

weightlifting, after school, see Mr. Binder (Room 448).

Outreach, Understanding, Responsibility & Support (OURS) Parent Group

The Sioux City Community School District, Northwest Area Education Agency, the Local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will continue their collaboration with the Outreach, Understanding, Responsibility, and Support (OURS) parent group. The efforts are focused at empowering parents/guardians of African American/Black students who attend public schools K -12

th grades. The topics are in relation to the education of the Black student,

community awareness, and other suggested topics. The OURS parent group meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm at the Sanford Community Center, 1700 Geneva Street. For more information and to RSVP to the meetings, contact Lori Gentry, BSW, Educational Equity Student Liaison for the Sioux City Community Schools at 712.203.1107.

December 13 meeting topic is: Healthy Families

North Middle would like to invite parents of North Middle students to organize and facilitate a PTO here at NMS. We have,

in the past, had an active PTO and would like to see the organization alive again to help our students and staff.

At this time we would like to get an idea of how many are interested in actively joining. Please contact Monica, at North

Middle at 279-6804, if you would be willing to be a part of this important organization in our school. We are hoping for a

great response! Thank you!

Gifts for your musician

Looking for a special gift for your musician? A few good ideas include a music stand, a cleaning kit, or a tuner/metronome. Students would also enjoy a book of popular tunes for their instrument, to give them more variety of music to play. Don’t forget pencils…musicians can never have too many!

JAZZ Rehearsals

Jazz 1 rehearsals are Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3:05-3:55 Jazz Workshop is Wednesday after school from 3:05-3:55. Any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student interested in learning about jazz is welcome to come to the jazz workshop.

All band students should plan to bring instruments home to practice at the end of the week, either Thursday or Friday. Students are welcome to bring their instruments home every day! 8th grade is focusing on being accountable to each other in their band. 7th grade is focusing on improving every class and every lesson. Everyone plays a vital part in all of our bands! Be Proud! Play Proud!

Remember the Barnes & Noble Book Fair is December 3! It is also Educator Discount Day for those of you working in schools, so educators get a 25% discount (10% on Café Consumables & select Nook devices)! Book Bash members will be there part of the day to wrap your BN presents for a free will donation. NMS artwork will be on display and there will be a per-formance by The Patriot Choir at 3:30 pm! Just say you are supporting North Middle when you check out. For online shopping, please use our ID number 11868981 when you check out—the end date for online credit for us is December 8. The profit will be used to buy more books in the library!

Seventh graders are researching their favorite authors or another report topic and using databases such as Gale Biog-raphy in Context and Teachingbooks.net. They will write a report and start a visual project of their choice after their research. They will create a bibliography or works cited page using our database called NoodleTools and present their project to the class. In reading classes, many students are checking out non-fiction books. They love the series paperback books: Who Is, Who Was, What Was, and Where Is. Ask them about their books! Sixth graders just typed a paragraph in MLA style, ask about their topic! I have shared one digital citizenship lesson each for 6th and 7th grade English classes which remind students how to be-have online and we discuss the safe and responsible use of technology.

Please encourage your children to return or renew items on time and to pay or work off their late or lost book fees. Students may use BoxTops for Education to pay their fines, which are worth 10 cents each for the NMS SPED Dept.

The user name and password for our online databases (see www.siouxcity schools.org, find Schools -- North Middle – Academics -- Library) are posted at school. These cannot be posted online but bookmarks and small AEA cards are available with this info. Please encourage your children to visit the library website: www.northmiddlelib.weebly.com for great reference sources; some are provided by our Northwest Area Education Agency. Examples include Webpath Express in Destiny, Culture-grams, Rosen’s CyberSmarts, EBSCO, SIRS, Soundzabound, Gale Research, Visual Thesaurus, Teen Health and Wellness, Free-domFLIX and TrueFLIX. Again this year there are eBooks through MackinVIA! Students login with an “s” and their ID number for both username and password. Over 1,500 are available at https://siouxcity.mackinvia.com or on the library catalog site, Desti-ny: http://destiny.siouxcityschools.com.
