Voices. In this world of ours, sometimes there seems to be no short-age. Often loud, always insistent, rarely helpful. Buy this and think that, believe this and do that. The cacophony of noise seems to suggest the age-old skills of personal reflection and thoughtful exchange have been left behind. Thankfully, as any day at North House underscores, there is a better way.

Voices. Sometimes quiet, often warm, always engaging. Somehow, with hands and mind focused, discovery and curiosity filling the moment, we find a shared voice. “Great! Can you show me again? Where did you say you are from?” In the workshop, there is no rush, learning works best together, we begin to open.

For me, the richness of the world, the wonder of discovery, the joy of friendship all come to life in the dynamic Voices shared at North House. Knowing this, I try my best to remember the classic saying: we were giv-en one mouth and two ears for a reason. The 2015 Annual Report shares a few of these Voices. Reflective, appreciative, engaged. Perspectives on the power of learning, the value of community, the importance of having dreams that change the world.

We have much to celebrate at North House. Our mission is thriving. Craft’s story and beauty are touching the world.

“I would not change a thing! The setting of the school on the lake is so beautiful, the staff feel like family and the memories will last a lifetime! Thank you so much for providing a place where dreams come true!” (Student, 2015)

Many helping hands and generous hearts helped make 2015 a reality. North House is honored. Our deepest thanks to all. And just ahead, the promise of the coming year!

New ideas and innovative projects. Enter the Fresh Cut Woodturning Symposium! Our newest thematic weekend, shaped in partnership with the American Association of Wood-turners, featured three instruc-tors from across the world; rich conversation about the differences and intersections of contemporary and traditional turning techniques; empowered by investments in equipment for traditional and contemporary turning techniques. Participants described their experiences:

“Thank you and your leader-ship team for pushing the power lathe ‘envelope’ in the Sympo-sium. Across our cultural land-scape the issue of ‘us’ vs ‘them’ is driving people into their like-minded bubble rather than real conversation with each other. Like a civil community would be, what a novel idea!”

Fresh Perspective at Fresh CutAnd: “The absolute highlight

was something I never imagined I would see: artists observing, learning, being inspired, creat-ing something entirely new because of their experience at North House. I’ll admit, at the opening session I was a little skeptical that we could learn to be creative, but learn I did...I’ve changed the way I think–I really didn’t expect that.”

Up 12% in 2015Participant involvement was

on the rise in 2015. A total of 2,340 students were part of cata-log courses (a 12% increase over 2014), arriving from 42 states and 3 foreign countries.

On the membership roll, we welcomed support from 1035 in-dividuals, families and businesses.

If there’s one thing that has consistently surprised (and delighted) me about being an intern here at North House, it’s the incredible generosity of the staff, instructors, neighbors, and students who walk through our

campus every day. On the one hand, it makes sense. We live in a small town, and the commu-nity around campus is tight knit. People look out for each other and do favors for one another, and you get into cycles of shar-

ing. Most gifts I’ve received have come out of nowhere. For me, as a young person here for less than a year, it is never some-thing I would have felt was due to me. But the strawberries and rhubarb and baked goods and birch bark and a whole ham (so much meat!) just appear. My little friend whose family grows some of our Community Supported Agriculture produce walks through the pick up line each Tuesday with me to make sure I get the biggest, best veg-etables (and usually sneaks in a couple extra into my bags). An instructor from the other side of the world spends evenings giving us lessons in birch bark weaving and Russian pancake recipes. A student sits down and shares a story while carving a little bird that now hangs in my window. Someone else offers a ride, or a meal, or a lesson. These moments of receiving are among the most vivid memories I will take home with me.

Being able to give, then, is a gift in itself, because just being here is a gift. To stop and share some time and a conversation with a curious visitor to campus, to take a work study volunteer out for a row, to make dinner for someone who has made my life richer in some small or large way. Sure, an intern’s life here is busy. Yes, an intern’s budget is not big. But to be wrapped into a world of sharing time, this beau-tiful place, and the gifts that I’ve received (I rarely cook a meal for someone else without an

THE NEXT GENERATION298 Youth Learners

North House invites many adult students onto campus each year, but equally important is the work we do connecting with what many may call “the younger generation.” While these efforts come in many flavors, from Fam-ily Weekend to targeted special events offerngs, we also use partnerships with schools and homeschool groups to engage lo-cal youth.

Indeed, in 2015 North House served 298 students in elemen-tary, middle and high school. The new Anderson Charitable Trust fully underwrites these efforts, opening the door to the next gen-eration!

Programs with Purpose

Instructor Retreat #32015 marked our third Instruc-

tor Retreat. Held in April, the weekend gives instructors time to meet and learn from each other.

New during the 2015 retreat, frequent students and craft en-thusiasts Erin Strauss and Liesl Chatman of the Science Museum of Minnesota, offered education sessions allowing instructors to sharpen one of their most impor-tant tools: their teaching skills.

Each year we hope to expand the opportunities at the Instructor Retreat, and last year’s progress highlighted that there is much to share and much to learn as we bring Craft’s story to life.

by the numbers

We came to the work study program hoping to learn new skills, spend time in a beauti-ful place, and give back in some way. What we didn’t know was that we’d leave with a sense of belonging and connection that would last long after our visit was done.

We traded sweat and dust for laughter and pizza, dirty clothes for generous sharing of skills and craft, and tired bodies for heart-felt conversations and genuine appreciation for our work.

The people who come togeth-er at North House are those who take time to listen to each other and learn from each other, who care about our communities and planet and want to contribute in a meaningful way, and who know how to have a whole lot of fun doing it all. This doesn’t always happen when people gather around craft, but it does naturally and abundantly at North House.

The friendships we’ve made, skills we’ve learned, and ways we’ve been able to contribute all make us feel that we’re a part of something special, and that we belong, even between visits, from hundreds of miles away.

Interesting times. This centu-ry continues a rapid technologi-cal change, and start-up indus-tries like Uber, Google, Amazon and Facebook are transforming America. Raw numbers of airline flights mushroom world-wide while natural resources dwin-dle. The world has never been

smaller, more vulnerable, and yet, with Internet, Wi-fi and cell phones, it’s never been more “connected”.

Maybe this works out for the 7.3 billion people of Earth. Maybe. Or maybe we need to commit to ensuring it does.

Our Splendid Mission

Page 11: North House Folk School Annual Report 2015

My wife and I live in Wiscon-sin, where a heritage of farm-land, small rivers and woodlots conspire to make us feel mostly unaffected by busy places. Our enduring passion is to keep this place whole. Hundred-year-old farmsteads and timber frame barns, sloping pastures grazed by happy flocks of sheep, land healthy enough to sustain hard-working bees and tena-cious badgers. And from which, young families make a living on 40-acres, growing organic food and being clever in the face of punishing weather: in the root cellar in early March hauling out potatoes, cabbage and squash as a new season’s seedlings sprout next door in the greenhouse.

Call us old-fashioned but we embrace the premise that life lived simply, strong hands shaping something beautiful, is the best response to mo-dernity. And that getting in a canoe every summer, paddling northern lakes and sleeping under star-filled skies, brings us closer to home than a lifetime of frequent-flyer miles.

Our splendid mission is to keep today’s world from oblit-erating a single sentence: I grew up on a small farm in Wisconsin. And traveling to North House in Grand Marais, the joy we find there in people doing profound things with hands, is confirma-tion we are on the right track. That, come what may, this is the part of the world we want to celebrate, support and return-to, knowing its answer to “What

should we do with this one wild and precious life?” always feels right.

Secret Recipe RequestsIt was once said “The world

needs more folk schools,” and that sentiment certainly rings true. Folk schools are springing up across the nation, and many of the folks involved with them come to North House for advice, asking, “How do you start a folk school?”

In 2015 we coordinated with at least a dozen fledgling schools to share a bit about how all the pieces fit together. While we’re happy to share the basics, we’re also careful to acknowledge that the way it all works can be a bit of a mystery–which is why we call these interactions “Secret Recipe Requests.”

Check out this seldom-seen view of the Red Building from above! The lofts on the North and South ends of the building are used for equipment storage, and this year the space got an upgrade. An electric lift allows movement of equipment like power lathes, and gone are the tippy stepladders–now a permanent staircase and catwalk provide easy access. A step forward indeed!
