A 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit, North House Folk School welcomes charitable contributions that support its educational mission and vision. Gift types include annual support, memorials, in-kind donations and planned giving. For more information on giving, please contact us at 888.387.9762.

North House Folk School is supported in part by hundreds of contributing members as well as the Lloyd K Johnson Foundation, Cook County Community Fund/Duluth-Superior Area Community Foundation, the IRRRB and the McKnight Foundation.

This activity is funded, in part, by the Minnesota State Arts Board through the arts and cultural heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the Legacy Amendment vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.

The North House story is one of generations–the craft of past generations being carried into the present, and then passed onward to future generations by people inspired to create and work with their hands.

generations

While hands-on anything seems to become more and more rare in the world, North House is honored to be a place where people meet to share their stories: the stories of handcraft, the stories of tradition, and how it all fits into today’s world.

Thank you for helping to make North House possible and stepping forward to become part of a community and generation preserving and reviving timeless traditions.

Every day in the cooler season, my day begins by the woodstove. Four well-dried birch logs stacked just so inside the woodstove. Layered in-

between, a handful of white bark – magic it seems, as its presence provides a sure promise of the much anticipated ignition and forthcoming warmth. A

flame and then a popping affirmation. Over how many centuries and generations has this morning ritual been

repeated? Imagining the North without birch, without its elegant beauty standing tall, without its crackling presence starting a fire, seems impossible. And, as if

one miracle is not enough, we can sit down near the fire with another piece of carefully harvested birch bark, its feel much like smooth leather, to weave, fold and bend. Baskets, knife sheaths, canoes, beads. Resources for a

life in the North. One such creation – a birch bark necklace, created by

Siberian artisan Vladimir Yarish – graces the cover and inner pages of this year’s annual report. The pictures hint of its elemental beauty. More difficult to sense, its lightness and warmth in your hand, the individual beauty of each hand-woven bead, the balanced connectivity of the beads linked together. Holding the necklace, its story seems to speak across time. Each bead is perfect in its own way, and yet, a new beauty emerges when a threaded strand pulls them together. Bead to bead, like generations connected by the thread of time, each separate and yet unquestionably linked together, just as we are.

Within this elegant beauty, the striking importance of the North House mission “to enrich lives and build community through the teaching of traditional northern craft” radiates profoundly. Shaping beads, baking wood-fired loaves, chopping greenwood bowls, spinning fibers – in each craft is much more than simply a new life-time skill. As we each

build, shape, knit and bend, we also pull forward the thread of time that links us all together, celebrating the vibrant story and rich understanding of the North.

Our 2013 Annual Report celebrates this journey. To the donors, supporters, volunteers, staff and students who have made the year so successful, North House extends its deepest thanks.

-Greg Wright, Executive Director

How do we invest in the future of craft? One great way - our intern program - ten months, three interns, in the thick of it all, and immersing in craft! Last year they took 36 classes, baking to boatbuilding.

Every season sings at North House, winter included! A great example - 107 students attended the third annual Northern Fibers Retreat (Feb. 2013) for a weekend full of warm fuzzies by the woodstoves.

We hosted our first In-structor Retreat in April 2013, welcoming 32 instructors. Of these, five courageously strutted the runway in the “fiber fashion show.”

“My spirit is filled...My

time here was very fulfilling in every aspect! ”

- North House Student

Craft is the story of past generations, and although the integrity of a final product may no longer determine a person’s physical well-being, it’s hard to deny the effect that hands-on learning has on the spirit. It’s an awakening of sorts, and it’s affirmed daily by student feedback.

of past generations, applying those skills today and carrying them into the future.

Looking back on 2013 this becomes more evident than ever. Whether Lake Superior is sparkling with a summer breeze, or resting quiet beneath a layer of ice, students come because the story of craft is alive in every season. Indeed, more students attended classes in February than August. The concept of an “off-season” has faded as students join us year round in celebration

of craft and hands-on learning.

preserving

North House has become one of the few places in the world that fosters a community of people

invested in remembering and honoring the skills

A successful spring fundrais-ing campaign raised a record $51,245–clearly members stepped forward generously to help make North House shine!

generationThe knowledge of traditional

craft is currently held in the minds and hands of few, but the few are growing in number. A key to the preservation of craft is getting our youth interested and involved.

Last year we tried something new: woodworking instructor Paul Linden proposed a class for kids only. Co-instructed with his 12-year old son, Avery, the class covered simple woodworking skills with hand tools. The kids left with wonderful projects they had made themselves—enthusiastic success! Will they continue practicing what they learned? Only time will tell, but we’re honored to be a part of laying the groundwork.

“I sincerely hope that

children...will begin a lifelong

relationship with tangible creativity, and realize a direct connection to their physical environments

by creating useful objects themselves.”- Paul Linden, instructor

Understanding the landscape has always been part of the world of craft.

In 2013, 14 youth groups from near and far came to North House for custom programs. Pictured here is a pizza bake with the Northrop Urban Environmental School in Minneapolis.

14

Helping hands! During April’s Volunteer & Service Learning Weekend, a crew of over 50 split and stacked 4 cords of wood for the wood-fired oven, put up 2 timbered entryways on the red build-ing, and built 1 woodshed for all that wood.

Preserving craft in-cludes the craft of preservation. During the May Sustainability Symposium students canned 32 jars of fruit, jam and veggie pickles to fill their winter stores.

Our inaugural Boat Friends program welcomed 6 vol-unteer families, exchanging light boat maintenance for access to our small craft & rowing on the harbor.

It’s a primary source of fuel on campus: we brewed 120 POUNDS of coffee in 2013–that makes right around 5400 mugs full...imagine the conversations that were shared over those steaming mugs!

generations“Those

who guide us, who inspire us,

having gone our way before,

are now partners with us in building a better world. Any success we have is theirs as

well as ours.”

– William Coperthwaite

The past year reminded us why building and celebrating community and preserving craft truly matters—we said our final goodbyes to folks who shaped and inspired North House from the beginning.

Kristi Downing, raku instructor and beloved Grand Marais artist, passed away in December 2013 after a brief reoccurrence of cancer. Kristi taught raku courses in her home studio on the shore

of Lake Superior for over a decade. Kristi’s laughter,

passing

spunk and creativity will be sorely missed. North House is honored to accept donations as part of a new Kristi Downing Memorial Fund.

Last year we also received the sad news that longtime friend, guest instructor and inspiring pillar of the handcraft movement, William Coperthwaite died in a car accident near his home in Maine. His book, The Handmade Life: In Search of Simplicity, has served as an inspiration for North House and the traditional craft movement for many years.

Many hands have made North House a reality, inspiring the school’s founders, instructors and students. As North House matures, the goodbyes will only continue—they are a reminder to honor each other always and continue in the inspiring footsteps left by members of our community.

Magic happens on campus, and 2013 included a new outreach effort from beneath a small timber frame on the campus commons last summer.

The initiative was part of our new Instructor in Residence program, and eight instructors took part throughout the summer, sharing their craft four days a week including birch bark canoe building, flintknapping, and bowl turning. Countless people stopped in their tracks to watch in wonder as they saw objects take shape before their eyes.

future

“I think it gave people a greater appreciation & understanding of craft–they saw it, and it may have

sparked their interest in

wanting to do it.”- Jim Sannerud,

2013 instructor in residenceSeeing these artisans at work

was a first contact with handcraft for many who simply stumbled upon campus asking the question, “What is this place?” We were uniquely positioned to answer in true North House style—observers could see the North House story take shape before their eyes. Our hope - curious visitors one day return in the future to create things themselves.

Celebrating craft and community comes to life during Unplugged each September. In addition to craft demos, mini-courses and music jams, a total of 13 acts performed during

three nights of music. Our thanks to Jon Vezner, NPR’s Mountain Stage Radio Show crew and all the performers.

13

Page 11: North House Folk School Annual report 2013

Staff got in on the fun promot-ing Minnesota’s biggest giving day of the year, Give to the Max Day, Nov 14. We shared 7 reasons to give, and give you did! In a single day 205 people donated a total of $34,395 to North House.

205

We sold 119 bags of popcorn during November’s Winterer’s Gathering and Arctic Film Festi-val. There was plenty of time to eat it during 11 speakers and 15 films, (including an outdoor film screening pictured here).

119

Connecting generations. During October’s Family & Intergenerational Learn-ing Weekend students took part in 9 classes, including a felting class where 14 wooly critters took shape!

14

Huge thanks to the 94 area businesses that donated items to the Points North Online Auction. A total of 164 bidders took part helping to raise $34,000 for North House.

Building community never tasted better! We didn’t actually count, but by our estimation we baked around 2227 pizzas in the wood-fired oven last year during student potlucks, group programs and events. Photo by Layne Kennedy
