Everystudentintheclassof2018andthereaftermustdemonstrateproficiencyineachlearningexpectation,atleastonceduringher/hisjunioryear.Studentswillhavemultipleopportunitiesacrossdepartmentstomeet each learning expectation during the year. Each department has identified at least one majorassessmentpermarkingperiodthatmeetsthecriteriatodemonstratingproficiency.BelowaretheNorthHavenHighSchoollearningexpectations:

NorthHavenHighSchoolestablishesacommonunderstandingofourcorevaluesandbehavioralexpectations.Wehaveidentifiedthreefundamentalexpectationswithintheschoolandourcommunityatlarge:Respect,Responsibility,andEngagement.Studentswillalsopositivelyandactivelycontributetotheschoolcommunity'ssocialandcivicexpectationsthroughcommunityserviceandschoolinvolvement.Studentswillmeetthisgoalthroughadvisoryactivitiesthroughouttheyear.

4.CommunityServiceRequirement

Therequirementforcommunityservicehasbothvocationalandsocialbenefits.Itallowsstudentstogivesomething back to the community at large and it also fosters personal growth. The community servicerequirement is40hoursandmustbe completedbyMay1of thesenioryear.Completionofcommunityservicehoursisrequiredforastudenttoattendtheseniorpicnicandprom.

Withinthistimeframe,therequiredhourscanbecompletedatanytimethatsuitstheserviceselectedbythestudent.ApplicationformsandalistofapprovedagenciescanbefoundontheNHHSwebsiteorguidanceoffice.Studentsshouldplantocompletetherequirementearlyintheirhighschoolcareerbeforeworkandotherobligationsmakeitmoredifficulttoschedule.Approvalformsshouldbesubmittedwithinonecalendaryearuponcompletionofservice.

ItisalsopossibleforastudenttoearncommunityservicecreditbyparticipatinginserviceactivitieswhileenrolledinaparticularcourseasidentifiedintheProgramofStudies.

COURSESELECTIONTheprocessofselectingcoursesbeginsshortlyaftermid-yearwiththeon-linepublicationoftheProgramofStudiesforthenextacademicyear.Schoolcounselorswillconductanorientationprogramandpresentinformationaboutcourses.ACourseInformationEveningwillalsobeheldforstudentsandparents.

ShortlythereafterCourseSelectionFormswillbedistributedtostudents(asampleGrade9formisincludedinthebackofthisbook).Bythistimeitisassumedthateachstudentwillhavetakentheopportunitytodiscusscourseselectionwithparents,teachers,andcounselorsandispreparedtolistthecoursetitlesontheCourseSelectionForm.AlternateCoursesmustalsobelisted.ThesecourseswillbeusedonlyifthestudentisunabletobescheduledforthecoursesthatwerelistedonthemainsectionoftheCourseSelectionForm.

TheCourseSelectionFormisbroughttoeachteacherwhowillfillintheappropriatecoursenumberandlevelandinitialtheform.Studentswillcompleteonlineregistrationandreturnformsbytheduedate.(Studentswhodonotreturntheirformspromptlyjeopardizetheirchancesforbeingscheduledforthecoursestheywant!)

L1–GeneralStudiesL2–CollegePreparatoryL3–HonorsL4–AdvancedPlacement/CollegeandUniversityclasses

Level1 (L1) –This level is intended for studentswhoseacademicabilityandperformancearedeveloping for thestudent’sgradelevel.

Level2(L2)–Thislevelisintendedforstudentswhoseacademicabilityandperformancearewhatisexpectedforthestudent’sgradelevel.

Level 3 (L3) – This level is intended for studentswhose academic ability and performance are advanced for thestudent’sgradelevel.Studentsinadvancedlevel(L3)courseswillbeexpectedto:

• doaminimumoffourhoursofhomeworkeveryweekforeachL3course;• workindependentlyoutsideoftheclassroomonshortandlong-termassignmentswithaminimumofteacher

direction;• complete writing assignments on a regular basis, which will be evaluated according to established

departmentalstandards;• beresponsibleforallassignments,includingmaterialsnotdiscussedinclass;• haveamasteryofacademicskillsandknowledgefrompreviouscourseswithinthatdiscipline;• use a variety of sources in their studies, including sources that they must identify, locate, and use

independently;• demonstrate critical thinking skills, such as analysis, synthesis, evaluation and the internalization of new

concepts;• demonstratesuperiorcommunicationskills,bothoralandwritten,accordingtodepartmentalstandards.

Level4(L4)–ThislevelisappliedtoallAdvancedPlacementcoursesandapprovedclassessuccessfullycompletedatlocalcollegesanduniversities.

CriteriaandProceduresUsedinStudentLevelPlacement:Thestudent’scurrentteacherrecommendsthecourselevelthestudentwillbeplacedinforthenextschoolyear.Thisrecommendationisbasedonthefollowing:

1. Academicachievementasreflectedinthestudent’sgrades2. Aptitude3. Motivation4. Diagnosticandachievementtestresultswhenavailable5. Portfoliosandsamplesofstudentwork

Inthecourseselectionprocess,teacherswillindicatetheirlevelrecommendationforthefollowingyearontheCourseSelectionForm.Beforeateachermakesarecommendationthatrepresentsachangeinastudent’scourselevel(higherorlowerthanthestudent’spresentlevel),theteacherwillconferwiththestudentandparentand

notifythestudent’sschoolcounselorofthefinalrecommendationusingtheRequestforProgram/ScheduleChangeForm.

ADVANCEDPLACEMENTCOURSES

Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered in English Language & Composition, English Literature,Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, Calculus, Computer Science (Java), Statistics, UnitedStatesHistory,U.S.Government,Psychology,StudioArtandPhotography.Thesecoursesaredesignedtostimulatesecondarystudents,promotehighachievement,andprovideameansofobtainingcollegecreditandappropriateplacementincollege.

Each course prepares students to take the Advanced Placement examination. These examinations,administered nationally each spring by the College Board, offer college placement and/or credit to anystudentwhoachievesthescoredesignatedbythecollegehe/sheisentering.AnystudenttakinganAPcourseisencouragedtotaketheAPexamination.Thecostoftheexaminationisbornebythestudent.Studentswithfinancialneedshouldspeaktoaschoolcounselororadministrator.

Students electing an Advanced Placement course will have a required summer reading list and/orassignment for the course. It is expected that students will return to school with the summer readingassignment completed. It shouldbenoted that anAP coursemaynotbe scheduled if fewer than fifteenstudentselecttotakeit.

STUDENTSCHEDULECHANGESWhenchoosingcourses,studentsareadvisedtodosowithcare,thoughtandtheadviceofteachers,schoolcounselors,parentsandschoolofficials.Theauthorityformakingchangesrestswiththeadministrationandschoolcounselors.Changesincourserequestsduetopreferenceofsubjectaftertheregistrationperiodshouldbemadepriortothelastdayofthecurrentschoolyear.Coursechangesafterthestartofthenewschoolyear(andnewsemester)maybelimiteddue toavailability.Thedeadline foraddingacourseis4 schooldaysafter thefirstdayof school.Thedeadline fordroppingacoursewithoutpenaltyorchanginglevelsis8schooldaysafterthefirstdayofschool.

Forchangesinlevel,theteacherwillconferwiththestudentconcerningarecommendedlevelchange.Thisinformationwill be sharedby the teacherwith the programcoordinator and the student’s counselor. The teacherwill contactparentstoindicatetherecommendedchangeandtherationalefortherecommendation.Requestsforchangesbyfacultyfordisciplinaryreasonswillbehandledbytheadministration.
