NORTH HAVEN WINS
UNSUNG HERO AWARD
Resident Comments
The Proessional Housing Management Associa-
tion (PHMA) recently presented North Haven with its2010 Army Residential Community Initiative, Unsung
Hero Award at its annual Proessional Development
Seminar in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Although the weather was extremely cold this winter,
the hearts o North Haven and Lend Lease employ-
ees warmed the Southern Cross neighborhood on
Fort Wainwright, AK and the real meaning o gener-
osity was very evident as team members displayed a
spontaneous act o proound kindness or one young
amily.
North Haven is ocused on making sure residents
have a smooth transition as they begin to work and
live at their new duty assignment in Alaska. North
Haven is not only concerned with providing quality
homes or their residents but also great communities
and other amenities and resident support services to
help make their living experience a sae, comortable
and memorable one.
North Haven and its Lend Lease contractor adopted
a young Fort Wainwright amily who lives next door
to the North Haven Administration oces. Through a
series o events spanning only a ew hours
this past November it became
known to North Haven and
Lend Lease employees
that we were in close
proximity to a amily
who did not pos-
sess urniture,
and were unable
to drive their ve-
hicle because they
could not aordto replace a fat
tire. Word spread
like lightening and
North Haven and Lend Lease employees o all sizes,
shapes and ages stepped up, providing beds, mat-tresses, linens, tables, chairs, toys, ull set o tires or
their vehicle and stocked their pantry. What made
the event unique was that it was not planned nor
orchestrated. As word o this young amily continued
to spread, more North Haven and Lend Lease em-
ployees showed up on their doorstep bearing gits.
Mike Kondus, North Haven Develop Manager, one o
the many good Samaritans commented, “To see my
co-workers respond in such a selfess and generous
ashion warms my heart and makes me proud to
work with a team o people such as these. We haddecided that we wanted to keep this just between us
employees, so that our reward was the happy amily,
but as the days have gone by it is clear that the more
we share this story, the more people are inspired to
help others in need.”
Don Brannon, Program Manager or the Chie o
Sta-Installation Management (Army Housing), hap-
pened to be on site or a eld visit in late November
was deeply moved to tears by the acts o kindness
shown toward this amily by the NHC and Lend
Lease employees. He immediately set out to makesure all those who were involved were
commended or their work. He
nominated NHC or the Unsung
Heroes Award at the annual
Proessional Housing
Management Associa-
tion (PHMA) that was
held in January,
where Janine Lind,
Executive Manager
or Winn Residential
Military HousingServices accepted
the award on NHC’s
behal.

Lend Lease Makes Deposit in Fairbanks Food BankHelping the Fairbanks Food Bank on Lend Lease Community Day wasn’t enough or the employees o
North Haven and Lend Lease. On February 18, 2011, employees spent their morning volunteering with
the Fairbanks Community Food Bank, continuing the community partnership established on Commu-
nity Day back in September 2010. Volunteers rom Community Day along with a ew new employees
expressed a strong desire to continue providing support to the Food Bank not only on Community Day, but
throughout the year. Volunteers were able to put together more than 75 ood orders which included meat,
bread, dairy products, resh ruit, vegetables, and canned ood items that would supply amilies o varying
sizes with meals or up to three days. Kristi Deskins, Lend Lease Foundation Representative, summarizedthe day, “It was a great opportunity to get away rom the oce and do something that makes you eel
good! I love having the chance to talk with the other volunteers and nd it very rewarding to take part in a
wonderul program that helps ght hunger within Fairbanks and its surrounding communities.” According
to Deskins the Lend Lease Foundation is planning on coordinating more volunteer opportunities with the
Fairbanks Food Bank throughout the year.Taking a break rom putting together ood boxes R-L: DannyTeston, Kristi Deskins, Judy Anderson, Mike Kondus
Sustainability in Siku BasinNorth Haven is responsible or what we take, what
we make and what we leave behind. We are dedi-
cated to ensuring that the buildings and homeswe build, maintain and occupy are environmentally
sound in design and refect best practices in
energy conservation design. We are committed
to promoting energy eciency and educating our
residents on living a green liestyle.
North Haven is in the nal stage o the Siku Basin
Mechanical Pilot Project which was ocused on
assessing the eciency perormance o new me-
chanical systems and controllers installed in three
buildings in the Siku Basin at Fort Wainwright.
In its original congurations, these mechanical
systems were ully capable o providing heat and
hot water to residents; however, they were very
energy inecient. Energy and water consump-
tion at Siku Basin is several times the consump-
tion o other, even older, residential buildings at
Fort Wainwright. The high natural gas and water
consumption can be attributed to the design o the
existing mechanical system and the energy and
water needed to unction optimally or residents.
The Siku Basin Pilot project consisted o 3 dier-
ent changes in 3 dierent buildings. One building
added controls to help moderate boiler unctions.
Another building added higher eciency boilersonly. The third building included both o these
changes, plus added an indirect red hot water
heater, which means the heated boiler water also
heats the water versus a direct gas burner. Initial
raw energy savings on the building with all the
changes were signicant rom the previous year.
North Haven is currently working with Siemens to
provide a more detailed analysis to help guide our
decision on which specic changes to implement
throughout the rest o Siku Basin.
The rst three weeks o March will encompass the
Siku Basin showerhead change out. In the rstthree weeks o March, all o the showerheads in
Siku Basin homes will be replaced with low fow
water conserving shower heads as a means o
reducing household water consumption. We have
launched a comprehensive resident education
campaign and the rst week o replacements
has been smooth, with no resident concerns or
complaints and one complement.
We hope to be able to apply the principles o
energy conservation to other neighborhoods
throughout Fort Wainwright and Fort Greely
including Green Retrot strategies in the uture.Energy conservation is one o the many acets
o North Haven’s sustainable business strategy
being implemented to ensure we are all being
good stewards o the environment or present and
uture generations o Soldiers and their amilies.
A $10,000 Actus Community Fund (ACF) Seed
Grant was recently awarded to the Polar BearChapter o the Association o the United States
Army to help und the nal phase o the Monterey
Lakes Fallen Warrior Memor ial. ACF is dedicated
to increasing our eorts by unding more events,
encouraging employee volunteerism and participa-
tion, creating diverse opportunities or undraising
and ultimately, sustaining our communities in
which Lend Lease employees live and work. This
phase will involve the development o the west
end o Monterey Lake so that the new memori-
als can be installed. Development will include
site clearing and grading, construction sidewalks,
placement o
monuments, andlandscaping.
This last phase
o the Memorial
will include granite
memorials or
World War II, the
Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Alaskan
Territorial Guard. The grant was made to advance
the memorial park into a truly special place or the
remembrance o Fallen Heroes. Monterey Lakes
Memorial Park is open to the public.
North Haven sponsored the 27th Annual Yukon
Quest International Sled Dog Race, one o thebiggest events in Fairbanks. The Yukon Quest is
a global event that draws thousands o people
rom all over the world. The 2011 Yukon Quest is
an epic two weeks o sled dog racing over 1,000
miles through arctic winter wilderness. The Yukon
quest commemorates the historic dependence
o humans on their sled dogs or mutual survival
in the Arctic environment and to perpetuate
humankind’s concern or our canine companions’
continued health, welare, and development.
Marti Steury, Yukon Quest Executive Director orAlaska said, “We are so excited to have North
Haven become part o our team and it’s such a
natural t because our trail runs right through Fort
Wainwright, on the Chena River. The sponsor-
ship is also a natural t as North Haven shares
with our residents that, “Your great Alaska journey
begins at home.” North Haven strives to ensure
that Alaska’s heritage is integrated through visual
representation and events whenever possible,
educating Soldiers and their amilies about the
rich and diverse heritage o their new home state.
The Yukon Quest gets its name rom the “highwayo the north,” the Yukon River and historic winter
land routes ollowed by prospectors, adventur-
ers and later mail and supply carriers traveling
between the gold elds o the Klondike and those
in the Alaska interior. The Yukon Quest trail traces
the route that the prospectors ollowed to reach
the Klondike during the 1898 Gold Rush and rom
there to the Alaskan interior or subsequent gold
rushes in the early years o the 1900’s.
