School-Based Team Meetings: What are They? Why Do We Have them?

The purpose of a School-Based Team Meeting is an opportunity to discuss issues that arise for a student and, as a team, brainstorm solutions.

When the school observes academic, behavioural or social issues that continue to be a concern for a student, a decision is often made to schedule a School-Based Team meeting to further support that student. The parents are included as a part of the team and are invited to join the meeting (parents are generally contacted by phone by the classroom teacher.) The school team consists of the class-room teacher, the Learning Assistance Teacher (who is usually the facilitator), one or two members of the school administration, the school counsellor and any other support services involved with the student, such as the Speech and Language Pathologist.

Our goal, as a team, is to help the student become more successful. Support strategies are identified and an Action Plan is developed. A further meeting may be scheduled to review the plan.

This is an important partnership process that helps students understand that home and school are working together to support them in their education.

Winter Reminders…..

Parents please discuss these matters with your child(ren):

1. The “no snowball” rule is in effect. While throwing snow seems like a perfectly natural activity, the potential exists for injury to others. We continue to remind students that throwing snow at school, or to and from school may lead to suspension.

2. Students should be dressed warmly so they can fully participate in the fresh outdoors. It is a good idea to send along some extra clothing during the wet/slushy season.

**Please label your child’s clothes**

3. When the weather warms then returns to cold, we find a lot of ice on our fields! We continually caution students (and parents) to stay away from icy patches and walk along the cleared pathways.

4. Sliding is permitted on the mid-field hill only. Only “soft sliders” are permitted. It is quite a gentle slope, but the children seem to enjoy it all the same!

5. During particularly icy days, both sliding and use of the Adventure Playground equipment will be cancelled. A reminder that running on the Adventure Playground is NOT safe at any time and is not allowed.

6. Snow “tunnelling” is not allowed due to the possibility of “cave-ins.”

Traffic and Parking Reminders

With a new year upon us, we’d like to remind everyone about some important traffic and parking reminders.

Traffic/Driving: (1) Please be sure to drive 30km/hr when in our school zone and be aware of all pedestrians. Children

sometimes forget the road safety rules and your diligence around the school is greatly appreciated. (2) When using our morning Kiss & Drop (i.e. Drop Zone), be sure to pull up to the end of the zone and

wait for a middle school student or parent volunteer to let your child/children out of your vehicle.

Parking: (1) Both the upper and lower parking lots are staff only. With our significant increase in enrollment over

the years, we now have more staff than parking spaces available. Parents can park all along Snowsell in areas that are marked for permitted parking.

(2) There are only 3 permitted parking spaces on the right curb on Snowsell just before the parking lot entrance. By-law came by our school in December to remind us all that parking behind these 3 permitted spots is both unsafe and illegal (see image to the right).

We thank you for your diligence, patience and care when driving and parking around our school.

We are looking forward to the start-up of our grade 6 boys and girls basketball teams in the coming months. Our schedule will in-

clude both home and away games. If you are able to help with the transportation of students to and from away games, please check in with the office to ensure that the proper paperwork is in order. Thank you in advance for your support, it is very much appreciated. Notices will be coming home soon!

Go Gators!

Welcome to 2017!

This month we will be starting our regular weekly meetings for the Battle of the Books. Participants should listen for announcements about their lunchtime meetings. New participants are wel-come to attend!!

Our second Scholastic Book Fair will take place during the week of February 1 – February 3. As always, it will occur at the same time as our parent conferences to allow parents a chance to shop with their children. This time, we are planning to use the money earned to purchase new furniture for our reading area. Thanks in advance for your sup-port of our book fairs!

Our Winter Reading Club will continue until Spring Break, so keep on reading! We have already had one student in grade one who completed her read-ing log over the Christmas break and received a special prize! There are weekly draw prizes as well as prizes for completing reading logs, so keep on reading!!

Our birthday book draw winners for December were: Kenton W. (primary) & Mackenna B. (Intermediate). Remember to enter your name in the draw if you have a January birthday!

Off the Shelf

PAC Meeting

The next PAC meeting will be held at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, Jan. 17th, in the

library. All parents/guardians are invited to attend. Babysitting available at the school.

Winter Weather Is Here!!!

Slippery winter sidewalks create a hazard for children making their way to and from school.

This is one of the reasons that our local municipalities have bylaws and policies requiring residents to clear snow and ice from sidewalks, walkways, and stairways bordering their property after each snowfall. We would ask that all community members that live in are-as where students travel to and from

school be on the lookout for slip hazards, and help make the commute to school a safe one.

CELL PHONES & ELECTRONIC DEVICES

Students should NOT bring electronic devices, games, IPods, cell phones to school - they are known to be the cause of great distraction, and there is always the concern that such costly items may go missing. Students have been asked to leave them at home. The school can-not take responsibility for the safety of these items or any inappropriate actions that may occur with their use. Due to privacy concerns, these items should never be used to take pictures at school. If your family has a special rea-son that your child must have a phone available, please contact Mr. Birkeland or Mrs. Voros directly.

To School Principals and PAC Presidents Free Parent Evening Session January 16, 2017 Hollywood Road Educational Services - Room 1 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm E-reg link will be provided in January for this event

Social Media Awareness The parent presentation will focus on all things digital. Your child has now entered into their digital media lives, where cell phone ownership doubles, video game use explodes and they dive into the world of social media and hypertexting. Your child is rapidly developing their personal identity with cell phone in hand and you need to be prepared. Family rules, parental controls and developing a family tech plan will be outlined as well as recommendations for monitoring your child's digital life. As a parent, you must lead the charge as a digital role model and help your child develop a strong digital citizenship foundation while reminding them that their digital footprint is a reflection of their real and online selves. At this age, they will encounter situations that will challenge their independence, including cyberbullying (and more commonly – cyberexclusion), the dangers of anonymity, privacy, sharing inti-mate images, and inappropriate websites, and you need to be there to provide support and guidance during this critical period. Finally, to better equip you for your digital parenting strategy, a snapshot of the current trends and concerning apps will be provided.
