PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Last Saturday the board members met to discuss and plan the Turn Around event. I want to take this opportunity to tell you a bit about what we have planned for the day as I hope you will be able to attend. It is shaping up to be a fun-filled day with plenty of different woodturning techniques to learn and possibly get some hands-on experience with. The event will be held at Don and Kathy’s workshop on Saturday, October 26th and will run from 10 am to 4 pm. A huge thank you to Don and Kathy for offering to host the event!! They do so much for our club and for woodturning, and their generosity and hospitality is appreciated. The basic idea behind the Turn Around is an opportunity for club members to get together in an informal setting and share some fellowship along with the chance to see and get some hands-on experience with various woodturning techniques. We will have various stations set up in the workshop and each station will be manned by one or more of the experienced club members. The various stations we have planned are as follows: Sharpening. With the number of new woodturners we have, I’m sure this will be a popular station. Sharpening tools is an essential part of woodturning and an important skill in itself. This station will be led by Don Geiger. Don will have a grinder set up along with his sharpening system. He will demonstrate the sharpening of various tools. He also suggests that you bring some of your tools that you need assistance with and he will show you how to sharpen them. Hollowing. Mark, Daniel, and Paul will lead this station and be showing off a number of different hollowing systems including hand hollowing, the Jamieson system, and Trent Bosch system with the Visualizer. If you’ve been thinking about getting into hollowing this will be a great opportunity to see and possibly try out a couple of different systems. This selection covers the full spectrum of hollowing - hand tools, captured bar system, articulated system, laser guide and monitor guided. Coring. Looking to get a coring system or just curious as to how it is done? Don will be showing how to use the different coring systems. The McNaughton, the Woodcut and possibly the Oneway. Embellishing off the lathe. Painting, carving, liming, pyrography, zentangle … the list goes on. There are a huge variety of embellishment techniques and Kathy will lead a station showing some of these techniques and giving you an opportunity to try some of them out yourself. Embellishing on the lathe. Chatter tool, decorating elf, spiral tool, Merlin chainsaw/grinder, Wagner texturing tool are all North East Florida Woodturners Volume 19 Issue 8 August 2019 An Affiliate of the American Association of Woodturners – Club Number 130 - jaxturners.org

tools which allow you to quickly add embellishment to your work on the lathe. I will be showing these tools along with giving you a chance to try them out. Chainsaw. I know there are some club members that don’t have the ability to process large pieces of wood into a size they are able to put on the lathe. If you have a log, perhaps that you won in the wood raffle, and don’t have the means to cut it down, bring it to the event and get in touch with either myself, Don or Mark. We will have our chainsaws there and can help you cut your log up. Also, if you have some extra wood or logs, bring them along with you. We will have an area set up where you can exchange your wood with other club members or just clear some room in your woodpile by giving a piece to another club member. Lunch. Moving on to the important stuff!! The club will provide burgers and hot dogs along with water and soda to drink. We like to ask anyone attending the event to bring along a side dish to put on the table for everyone to share. Also, please bring a folding chair with you. As you can see, there will be no shortage of things to see and do. I think it has the potential to be a great day and I hope that you are able to join us on Saturday, October 26th. See you at the meeting on Monday evening! Regards Keith PS: Don and Kathy are located at 5032 Nathan Hale Road Jacksonville FL 32221

Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts By Don Penny I just returned from a two-week trip to Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tn. I was invited to assist Beth

Ireland and Keunho Peter Park for their Making Sculptural Stringed Instruments class. Arrowmont offers

classes in special topics. Clay, 2-D arts (drawing, painting, paper, books, printmaking and photography), Fibers, textiles, metals, glass, enamels and wood all set in the mountains of Gatlinburg, Tn. The school was founded in 1912 as a settlement

school and has grown into a national contemporary arts and crafts education center supporting

learning opportunities for individuals of all skill levels and ages. The setting is beautiful hosting classes, galleries, exhibitions, symposia and

conferences. There were nine two-week classes being taught. Ours, Robert Ebendorf, Lost and Found

Personal Adornment, Erin Anfinson, Wax, Paper, Scissors, Exploring Encaustic And Paper, Wendy Osterweil, Pattern In Process: From Silkscreen Printed Fabric To Wearable Art,

Steve Loar and Dixie Biggs, Techniques For Developing Original Surfaces, Josh Copus, Wood Fired Works, Richard James, The Ceramic Figure Dissected and Jana Pullman,

Making Books and Boxes. Being able to interact daily with the instructors, 65 students, resident artists and the 20 work study students fired my imagination and opened my eyes to techniques and embellishments. We took 7 students and taught them to make 2

stringed instruments, a dulcimer and a tenor guitar. 2 students had never worked with wood,

none had ever made an instrument and only 2 knew how to play. We explored guitar making techniques, sound enhancement and unleashing your ideas into a functional instrument. If you are interested in furthering your skills Arrowmont offers a class for your needs and wants https://www.arrowmont.org.

The Georgia Association of Woodturners will be holding its 2019 Turning Southern Style symposium this Sept. 20-22 in Dalton, GA. The symposium will feature demonstrations by David

Ellsworth (YES!! You read that correctly!!!), Hans Weissflog, & Stuart Batty, along with 3 local club members - Steve Mellott, Dan Douthart, & Bill Lynch. You can get more information and register at the Symposium page (www.gawoodturner.org/symposium). Elisabeth Ross Symposium Chair Georgia Association of Woodturners Wood of the month - Camphor

Cinnamomum camphora is native to China south of the Yangtze River, Taiwan, southern Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, and has been introduced to many other countries. It was introduced to the contiguous United States around 1875. C. camphora has become naturalized in portions of Alabama, California,

Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Texas, and South Carolina. It has been declared a category I invasive species in Florida. It grows up to 66–98 ft tall. In Japan, where the tree is called kusunoki, five camphor trees are known with a trunk circumference above 66 ft, with the largest individual, Kamō no Ōkusu, "Great camphor of Kamō"), reaching 79 ft.

The leaves have a glossy, waxy appearance and smell of camphor when crushed. In spring, it produces bright green foliage with masses of small white flowers. It produces clusters of black, berry-like fruit around 1 cm (0.39 in) in diameter. Its pale bark is very rough and fissured vertically.

C. camphora is cultivated for camphor and timber production. The production and shipment of camphor, in a solid, waxy form, was a major industry in Taiwan prior to and during the Japanese colonial era (1895–1945). It was used medicinally and was also an important ingredient in the production of smokeless gunpowder and celluloid. Primitive stills were set up in the mountainous areas in which the tree

is usually found. The wood was chipped; these chips were steamed in a retort, allowing the camphor to crystallize on the inside of a crystallization box after the vapor had passed through a cooling chamber. It was then scraped off and packed out to government-run factories for processing and sale. Camphor was one of the most lucrative of several important government monopolies under the Japanese.

Camphor’s moderate density makes it easy to shape and machine with minimal effort. Areas of interlocked grain may cause tearout issues, but complications are usually minimal. Glues and finishes well. Camphor has a very characteristic odor, for which the tree is named. The most recognizable product that contains the

extracts of camphor are medicated chest rubs, which have the same distinct scent. Camphor has been reported to cause skin and respiratory irritation, as well as a number of other effects, such as headaches, giddiness, and asthma-like symptoms. It is also an insect repellent and a flea-killing substance.

Did you know we have a celebrity in our midst? Maybe you noticed the article in the September issue of American Woodturner. Our very own Merlin Conrad was featured. See more from Merlin in the Show and Tell section below.

Merlin Conrad, Florida A couple years ago, my wife and I were in an antique shop, where I saw a complete silver tea set for $30. In visiting other shops, I found the same general pricing for similar sets. It dawned on me that relatively few people do “tea” anymore and that all those silver sets we gave our parents for their silver anniversaries are coming back to us as an inheritance. I bought the set, thinking there had to be something I could do with it. I decided to dismantle the silver parts and replace the body of the pieces with turned wood. By using a fine-tooth band saw blade, I removed spouts, legs, handles, etc. After a little experimentation, the first pitcher came into being, followed by many more. At craft shows, my silver-enhanced pieces are the first to sell.

Untitled Pitcher, 2016, Rosewood, recycled silver, 9" × 6" (23cm × 15cm) Untitled Bowl, 2018, Camphor, recycled silver, 6" × 17" (15cm × 43)

The server and chalice were the first pieces I made using silver enhancement. Since then, I have made

twelve sets for clergy and church. Untitled Server and Chalice, 2016, Rosewood, recycled silver, pitcher: 12½" × 8½" × 6" (32cm × 22cm

July Meeting Show and Tell

Merlin Conrad made 3 cutting boards/platters from glued up blanks. Merlin likes to work with silver and added silver feet to the bottom of this one shown in the lower picture.

John Catches made this bowl from glued up maple, walnut and cherry. Very nicely done John! So far it’s unfinished.

Barbara Hahn made a shoe horn and a magnifying glass from kits. Pretty cool Barb.

Jim Shelby made this pair of small boxes from birch.

Bernard Ross made this unusual putter. He’s looking for a real putter shaft if anyone has one to give him.

Keith Larrett made this pair of bowls, one from pear and the other from red elm. He donated them for giveaway at the AAW symposium in Raleigh last month.

Keith also brought in an assortment of small bird houses on a stand. There’s a close-up on one of them in the next photo.

Oops, there might be something wrong with this one. Can you tell what the problem is? Keith said this went from a bird house to a bat house.

Mark Wood brought this beautiful hollow form made of monkey pod wood that he got from the Florida symposium a couple of years ago. Another exquisitely finished piece by Mark. Mark said the wood caused him respiratory problems so beware if you turn this wood and make sure to wear your respirator.

Keith and Colleen Larsen made a couple of bowls for Beads of Courage. Keith made the one Colleen is holding above and Colleen made the one below.

Ed Malesky made this gorgeous platter out of poplar. He said he shaped the inside first then drill partway through to create the hole pattern. He then turned the back and wasted away the bottom of the holes from the back side. He then sanded around and through each hole and painted it. Wow, that’s really something Ed.
