WelcomeI have lived in North Devon since the age of 4. Back then, the variable

landscape offered opportunities to explore every space. After climbing

trees, swimming in the sea and making dens in the woods, I am now

able to appreciate the bliss of North Devon in a different way, such as

indulging in a delicious cream tea and walking along the coast.

North Devon holds a special place for anyone, young and old, because

of its versatility. Whether you’re seeking golden sandy beaches or

quaint country walks, exciting activities or a spot of retail therapy,

explore everything the area has to offer and immerse yourself in the

relaxing Devon lifestyle.

The steep Cliff Railway is a marvel of North Devon, remaining a must-do for all visitors.

Travel back in time when dinosaurs walked our earth. Lurking amongst the tropical trees in the depth of the valley are some of the latest in dinosaur animatronics new to the park this year.

Come face to face with ferocious Spinosaurus, a family of Triceratops and our very own British dinosaur, the vicious Neovenator.

Watch out for the young T-Rex lurking round the corner, his mother is close behind. Watch the UK’s most realistic full sized animatronic T-Rex come to life, but don’t stand too close to Dilophosaurus, you may get wet! Visit the park’s Dinosaur Museum where you can see fantastic and rare exhibits including a complete Allosaurus skeleton and one of the largest nest of fossilised eggs ever discovered.

Wandering through this stunning park set within a beautiful valley you will be amazed to uncover natural cascading streams and waterfalls, various strains of Bamboo, tropical trees and plants as well as an abundance of indigenous wildlife. The park is home to a variety of exotic animals including African Lions, Primates, Otters, Sea lions, Penguins, Meerkats and rare White Hudson Bay Wolves. The park is one of only two collections in the UK where you can see these beautiful animals. There are daily Sea Lion Shows, talks and animal encounters throughout the day for the whole family to enjoy.

Take a ride on the Dino Express and scream as seven and a half thousand gallons of water hurtle towards you and your fellow passengers! Or be brave enough to enter the park’s underground tomb for a fascinating insight into Egypt. Decipher the ancient art of picture writing with the exact replication of Egyptian hieroglyphics - but watch out for the mummy! If you love creepy crawlies you will enjoy the Bug World exhibit, the kingdom of Insects and other invertebrates!

Victorian buildings create an imposing high street, which is home to a wealth of local shops and restaurants. Attractions in the town include an aquarium, the Landmark Theatre, a cinema and boat trips from the harbour for activities such as diving and sightseeing.

There is also an opportunity to tour the coast of Ilfracombe in an old lifeboat, The Hampshire Rose.

Ilfracombe Aquarium This all-weather attraction provides a unique insight into the seas of North Devon. The aquarium is home to a vast range of local aquatic life in recreated natural habitats. Exhibits provide visitors with a journey from the source of an Exmoor stream, down river to an estuary, local rock pool, harbour, coast to Lundy and its marine reserve.

Watermouth CastleA Victorian Castle full of treasures, a theme park and stunning gardens feature at Watermouth Castle in Berrynarbor. Overlooking the beautiful Watermouth Cove, the castle offers wonderful entertainment for all ages.

The Landmark TheatreHome to a beautiful theatre with seating for 480 people, the renowned Landmark Theatre is a hub for entertainment. Catch shows including Private Lives, Talon- The Best Of The Eagles, The Supersonic 70s Show and The Sooty Show.

The areas feature plenty of opportunities for rock pooling and several public footpaths extend around the village, including walks to Baggy Point.

Croyde is perfect for activities including swimming, surfing, fishing and surfboard/canoe hire, while in the village, a good range of popular local pubs and restaurants can be found.

Why not sample local cuisine at the famous eatery The Thatch, which frequently hosts a fantastic range of musicians.

The area has a relaxed atmosphere and a friendly surfing community, with its many shops and campsites, there is a pleasant vibe to the village.

Putsborough Beach also offers further surfing opportunities, known as one of the cleanest and most attractive beaches in the South West.

Now in its 19th year, the UK National Sandcastle Competition at Croyde Beach takes place on Sunday, August 31. This spectacular event sees teams create masterful sandcastles in North Devon to win the coveted title of ‘King or Queen of the Castle’, in aid of the North Devon Hospice.

Located in the centre of the North Devon Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Braunton is a popular community.Incorporating Braunton Burrows, the largest sand dune system In England, Braunton is home to a number of independent shops, restaurants and cafes and occupies a perfect location close to the beach.

Exploring North Devon on a bicycle is an excellent way to enjoy everything the region has to offer.

With routes through historic market towns, gorgeous coastal villages and stunning views on every ride, discover where your bike can take you this summer.

The 108-mile route is taken by its namesake in the novel Tarka The Otter, published by Henry Williamson in 1927. With both footpaths and cycle paths available, there

are plenty of places to hire a bike for this splendid journey through Devon.

Route distance: 6 milesFor a flat, off-road route suitable for

families, this picturesque track runs along the banks of the River Taw.

This is a good section for spotting wildlife such as curlew, redshank, dunlin,

golden plover and Brent geese,or perhaps even a rare spoonbill.

Route distance: 9 milesYou can join this section at Barnstaple Railway

Station and head out westwards on this pleasant traffic free path towards Bideford.

Outstanding views can be discovered across the mouth of the Taw Estuary before

reaching Fremington Quay. This routeis also part of the South WestCoast Path before heading to

Bideford (East the Water)via Instow.

Route distance: 11 milesThis is the least well known but most

peaceful and tranquil part of the Tarka Trail. It is a beautiful and scenic stretch that heads south on the old railway path

through East Yarde towards Petrockstowe and Meeth. Ahead are great views of

Dartmoor National Park.

With a variety of shopping opportunities, including major high street brands such as Topshop, River Island, The Body Shop, New Look, Burton, Dorothy Perkins, Costa Coffee, Café Nero and Boston Tea Party, Barnstaple is also home to wonderful independent shops and boutiques.

Whether you’re seeking vintage furniture, handmade trinkets, lovely soaps or delicious edible treats, Barnstaple is North Devon’s hub for shopping.

The historic pannier market is also open all week, offering local foods, clothing and homeware. Opposite the market is the famous Butchers Row, home to local butchers, bakers, fishmongers and quaint delicatessens where you can pick up mouth-watering meats, cheeses and tasty baked goods.

The beautiful and bustling town centre is perfect for retail therapy, with a mixture of Medieval, Georgian and Victorian architecture providing a pleasant backdrop for your day out.

There are endless options for lunch or dinner out, from Italian restaurants to rustic cafes, classic pubs to local fish and chip eateries.

If you are interested in arts and culture, The White Moose gallery showcases outstanding local talent, while the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon offers the chance to discover the history of North Devon. Highlights of the museum include the Tarka Gallery, the Story of North Devon and the Regimental Collection of the Royal Devon Yeomanry.

As the oldest borough in the country, Barnstaple has a wealth of history merged with outstanding shops and restaurants.

THE WALKof a lifetimeVoted Britain’s Best Walking Route by the readers of Walk magazine, the South West Coast Path offers a unique perspective of North Devon.

North Devon’s coastline provides a variety of extensive beaches, such as Saunton Sands and Woolacombe, and dune systems such as Braunton Burrows.

Due to the frequent villages and facilities, the length to the east of the Taw-Torridge estuary is a popular routefor walkers.

Lynton and the Valley of Rocks2.7 miles

This is a calm walk along a level section of high cliffs between Lynton and the impressive Valley of Rocks. The rock formations and local feral goats create picturesque walking experience.

Westward Ho! to Cornborough Cliff2.1 miles

This walk offers excellent views over North Devon. Leading along the outskirts of Westward Ho! along an old railway line, to a viewing point on Cornborough Cliffs,the views extend across Bideford Bay towards Clovelly and Hartland Point.

Baggy Point:2.7 miles

A short and easy walk out to the tip of Baggy Point and back again, with stunning sea views. A great family walk with unique sightings such as whale bones and an old wreck post, as well as breathtaking rocks and cliffs.

Heddon’s Mouth:2.1 miles

A peaceful walk through ancient woodland follows a stream to a secluded beach. Strewn with boulders and shadowed by steep hillsides and dramatic cliffs, this is a stunning walk suitable for families.

Putsborough Marine Drive2.6 miles

With unrivalled views from Baggy Point to Morte Point and to Lundy, this pleasant walk includes passing the beach which extends for over two miles.

Braunton Burrows6.1 miles

This route is a long walk, but over easy ground. Starting at Velator, the route passes through Braunton Burrows, one of the UK’s largest sand dune systems, with a unique diversity of species. Heading inland around Braunton Marshes, the walk also passed the Braunton Great Field.

Croyde & Saunton Down4.5 miles

For a refreshing walk, this stretch of the coast path weaves through a network of old lanes, leading to a vantage point above three miles of golden sand at Saunton. Views extend across Bideford Bay and the Taw and Torridge Estuary.

Bull Point & Lee Bay4.5 miles

First passing through ancient woodland and coastal farmland, this route passes through prehistoric standing stones and drops to another small valley, before emerging on a large exposed heath with views towards the Bristol Channel.

Combe Martin3.6 miles

This round-trip route goes from sea level at Combe Martin’s beach to the hills up high behind the village. Unbeatable panoramic views extend down the valley to the sea.

Clovelly and Mouth Mill5 miles

A walk through woodland, also passing through the Brownsham Moors and Culm Grasslands, offers an optional detour into the village of Clovelly. The famous thatched and cobbled village is home to donkeys and offers a beautiful walk.

With views of Dartmoor to the South, Iddesleigh is home to Parsonage Farm, otherwise known as War Horse Valley.

The land has been farmed by the same family for nearly 100 years and is renowned for its connections to War Horse by Michael Morpurgo.

The farm includes a chance to browse a First World War and War Horse exhibition, including historical artefacts and information about the role of horses in the war.

Parsonage Farm is also home to some furry residents in the form of Devon Longwool sheep and the tiny Soay breed. A farm trail offers another opportunity to take advantage of the stunning valley and the chance to spot some local wildlife.
