    GENERAL INFORMATION

  • 3

INTRODUCTION This report provides information on degree and certificate programs offered and student program completions for fiscal year 2006-2007 in North Dakota's public and private postsecondary educational institutions. Institutional programs are coded in accordance with the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP Code) system provided by the National Center for Education Statistics branch of the United States Department of Education. To assist readers, programs have been organized by level of offering: certificate, diploma, associate, bachelor, and graduate. The registrars at each institution provided the information included in the book. Individuals desiring additional program information about vocational-technical programs should check the directory published by the Department of Career and Technical Education. Students desiring information about institutional tuition, fees, room and board rates, and financial aid should contact the institution's admissions office directly. Information on North Dakota University System institutions is available through the System web site: http://www.ndus.edu DEFINITIONS Program Completed: A completed program is one in which the individual has met all of the requirements to obtain a degree or certificate (16 or more credit hours at the undergraduate level or 9 or more credit hours at the graduate level) in that field of study. This number may vary slightly from other publications that report degrees granted since one person may complete two programs yet receive only one degree. This publication reports all programs completed. Information on certificates of completion (less than 16 credit hours at the undergraduate level or 9 hours at the graduate level, or non-credit activities) is not included in this report. Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP): The CIP is a taxonomic coding scheme that contains titles and descriptions of primarily postsecondary instructional programs. It was developed to facilitate National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) collection and reporting of postsecondary degree completions by major field of study using standard classifications that capture the majority of reportable program activity. The first two digits of a CIP code identify the CIP family; for instance, in the code 13.1202, 13 indicates programs in education. The second four numbers identify the specific program, 13.1202 is Elementary Education. The six-digit CIP title is generic and may differ from actual system institution program titles. The CIP is the accepted federal government statistical standard on instructional program classifications. Standard Occupational Classification (SOS): The 2000 SOC system is used by federal statistical agencies to classify workers into occupational categories for the purpose of collecting, calculating, or disseminating data. All workers are classified into one of over 820 occupations according to their occupational definition. To facilitate

  • 4

classification, occupations are combined to form 23 major groups, 96 minor groups, and 449 broad occupations. Each broad occupation included detailed occupation(s) requiring similar job duties, skills, education or experience. In the Programs Offered by CIP Code section, an “X” indicates that program is offered. In the Student Program Completions sections, a “0” indicates the program is offered, but had no graduates that year. Delivery Method Multiple delivery options are available through NDUS campuses. A list of delivery options and their codes follows: C=Correspondence I=IVN O=Online OC=Off-Campus/In Person T=Traditional V=Videotape Courses/programs may be offered by more than one delivery method. If a course/ program is offered through more than one delivery method, it will be designated by delivery code, separated by a comma. For example, “O,T” means the course is offered both online and in the traditional classroom. Some courses/programs are offered through a combination of delivery methods. These courses/programs will be designated by delivery codes in parenthesis. For example, “(OC,O)” means the course/program is offered through a combination of off-campus, in-person and online instruction.

For the first time, the Programs Offered and Completed Report provides readers with a tool for linking academic programs to occupations. This report correlates 2006-07 program completion data collected from North Dakota institutions of higher education with data published by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). The completion data were analyzed to extract the number of reported completions for each program of study as defined by the U.S. Government’s Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) code. These programs of study include: • Programs completed with a diploma or certificate. • Programs completed with a two-year academic or applied science associate

degree. • Programs completed with a four-year bachelors degree. • Programs completed with a graduate degree. • Programs completed with a professional degree. U.S. Department of Labor data were analyzed to extract specific Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes applicable to each CIP defined program of study. CIP programs are described in terms of family (2 digit level) and specific program of study (6 digit level). SOC defined occupations are described in terms of occupational family, occupational code description, and a more detailed description defined by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The report is aggregated by CIP program of study family and then sub-aggregated by specific CIP codes that are correlated with possible related occupations as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor. Finally, the number of 2006-07 completions aggregated for each CIP defined program of study is listed. The following pages align academic programs to occupations in the workforce.
