The event included staff and others taking a turn at hitting a target, which resulted in Brian being dumped into a barrel of cold water, on behalf of the charity. On Monday, 17th August a team of volunteers led by community archaeologist, Christine Baker began a month-long community excavation at Swords Castle. Since then, there has been lots of hard work and lots of finds to wash, sort and examine. Swords Castle: Digging History, is the County Council’s first Community Archaeology project. It’s providing local people with a unique opportunity to take part in a real archaeological excavation for the first time. Working with a small team of profes- sional archaeologists, volunteers have been digging, discovering lots of artefacts and learning how to ‘do’ archaeology. Most of the artefacts found so far are from the nineteenth century like the clay pipes made by Downey Brothers of 8 Brunswick Street Dublin, but on only the second day of the dig volunteers found a piece of a medieval ridge tile – a very exciting find. The excavation programme is designed to answer specific questions which remain about the Castle. Although Swords Castle is one of the best surviving examples of an archbishop’s residence in the country, and was an important administrative centre, there are some questions that remain unanswered: Is there a graveyard underneath the Castle? Were there buildings within the Castle yard? How old are the different buildings in the complex? Through this project, we hope to answer at least some of these questions. The results will not only tell us more about the Castle’s 800 year history, it will also inform the future development of the Castle as the Council implements the Swords Castle Conservation Plan published in 2014. Excavation takes place each weekday until 11th September and the Council is looking for volunteers to come along and join the team. Excavation work takes place from 10am to 4.30 pm each day. Volunteers must be over 18 years and the Council asks that volunteers come along at 10am and commit to (at least) one full day. An exhibition called ‘My Castle’ also takes place in Swords Castle from now until Friday, September 4th (except for Sunday 30th August). The exhibi- tion explores what the Castle means to the people of Swords. Dublin Airport PreparingFor Super JumboDublin Airport Authority (DAA) is set to makemajor adjustments to facilitate Emirates Airlinesto begin operating the world’s largest passengerjet at the airport. The new Airbus 380 requires specialist equip-ment to handle it, such is its size. A speciallybuilt airbridge is needed at Terminal 2 to facili-tate the giant double decker aircraft, which canaccommodate 529 passengers and has a full barand lounge, as well as showers for its passen-gers. The DAA has sought clarification fromFingal County Council that the proposed newairbridge will be exempt from planning permis-sion. However it is expected that the airport willface a number of logistical challenges before thehuge airline can use the airport. DAA are in theprocess of making sure that all aircraft can beaccommodated at the airport, considering theincrease in demand and the importance ofensuring connectivity with international airports, where such aircrafts are located. This comes asEmirates are looking to increase capacity on itsDublin-Dubai route.

Aer Lingus Sidesteps Legal Action In UKAer Lingus hasnarrowly avoidedbeing taken to court inthe UK, after it wasfacing legal action overits handling of passen-gers who have hadtheir flights disrupted.Legal proceedings,

which were in theprocess of being takenby Britain’s CivilAviation Authority(CAA), were narrowlyavoided when thecarrier amended itsregulations over how itprovided information

to passengers ondelayed or cancelledflights. Aer Lingus areaccused of not

providing sufficientinformation to itscustomers duringdisruptions. UnderEuropean regulations, airlines are obliged toprovide adequateinformation to passen-gers about their rightsin the event of longdelays and cancella-tions. The heat wasturned down on AerLingus, when the regu-

lator said Aer Lingushad now “agreed toimprove the quality ofinformation theyprovide to passengersduring disruptions andhave signed legalu n d e r t a k i n g sconfirming this. “This move removes apotential headache oflitigation for IAG, as itenters the final furlongin acquiring AerLingus. Minister forTransport Tourism andSport, PaschalDonohoe said it was “avery important day inthe acquisition of AerLingus by IAG”.

O’Brien Wary Of“Monster” Airport Plan Local Green Party representative, Joe O’Brienhas hit out at comments fromDublin MEP, Brian Hayes onthe proposed expansion ofDublin Airport. Hayes previ-ously said that following theIAG takeover of Aer Lingus, that Dublin Airport couldexpand to provide a “thirdrunway for Heathrow,” hesaid. “Mr. Hayes has barelybeen a year in Europe andit’s already clear that he haslost touch with his constituency and is confusedabout the geography of Ireland. The people ofPortmarnock and St. Margaret’s in particular, will not be happy to hear of plans for an extrarunway at Dublin Airport. You have to live inthese communities to truly understand thenegative impact that the current level of airporttraffic already has. Potentially doubling thiswould be very bad for these communities,”O’Brien said. “In addition, what Hayes is proposing would beof very limited economic value to the region.Dublin Airport already handles in the region of600 flights a day, which is more than enough forany community to endure – do we really want amonster airport like Heathrow, whose tworunways handle over 1,300 flights a day?” hecontinued. “While there is planning permissionin place for this runway up to 2017, I predictsome serious opposition from local communi-ties if action is taken to turn Dublin Airport intothe next Heathrow,” he said.

When people speak about shopping in Swords, many think they are referring to the area stretchingfrom the Garda station down to Swords castle. However, the area south of this, from the Gardastation as far as Dublin Road, is full of hiddengems for keen shoppers to explore. There is agreat array of shops on both sides of this part ofMain Street.A few years ago, this was a neglected area, needing development, but now the story is verydifferent. It can be argued that this part of Swordsprovides the finest dining establishments in thetown, where discerning diners and revellers canenjoy some of the finest food, drink and entertain-ment anywhere in the town. This area is very

popular with families, where children can becatered for in a friendlyand safe environment. There is also a greatvariety of shops in thisarea, which provideshoppers with a widerange of products, providing choice andvalue for money.Indeed it is difficult to

walk from Dublin Road as far as the Garda station, without stopping at one of the shops here. Therange of products vary from essential householdgoods, to eateries, to shops offering novelty goodsat great prices. The popular expression ‘from aneedle to an anchor’ applies to this area of town, where nearly everything can be purchased here. The building of the petrol station on Dublin Roadhas brought new customers to this part of townand the subsequent opening of new businesseshere. Another advantage to shopping here, is thatample car parking is available for customers, thusproviding peace of mind, as you explore some ofthe great bargains on show. For those withoutcars, there is a reliable and frequent bus service, with stops right in the heart of this part of Mainstreet. Many regards this part of the town as the place togo for necessary services that are difficult to findelsewhere. It is here that you can get keys cut, enjoy a cup of coffee, or have a tasty lunch. Youcan also have domestic appliances repaired here,or traded in against something better, or you canhire machinery if you need to and you can also

have garments repaired or re-sized here. There arealso some excellent pubs here, which attract visi-tors from far and wide.Much of this part of Swords is steeped in historyand it houses St Colmcille’s Well, which is widelyregarded as the source of Swords, which is calledSórd, the ancient Irish name for Well. From here, the Round Tower and St Columba’s Church is veryconvenient and is well worth a visit. Perhaps nowis an appropriate time to take a fresh look at thispart of Main Street and Dublin Road and take timeout to explore some of the delights that are onoffer to shoppers in this part of Swords.

Last week, I suggestedthat fresh electionsmight be called inGreece. This week thatcampaign is underwayand for those of us elec-tion junkies it will be afascinating few weeks. The opposition is disor-ganised, and AlexTsipras faces defectionsfrom his Syriaparty due to theGovernment’sfailure todeliver ontheir electoralp r o m i s e s ,made onlysome months ago. Will the defectors andothers on the left gathertogether enough votesto be a strident opposi-tion and will Syriza beforced into forming agovernment with thecentre right? Shouldsuch a Governmentresult it will be a seriousdisappointment to thoseon the left across Europewho saw Alex Tsipras asthe trail blazer for a newpolitical direction acrossthe EU.Tsipras can claim he hasa bail out in place andthat he is directing aGovernment of reform.Such success comes atconsiderable cost to hisParty’s reputation. Yethis party seems likely tobe the leading force afterthe election. Many of hisprevious supporters willnot be voting for him onthis occasion believingthat the bail out termsare not sustainable.Voters will be aware thateven the IMF is notprepared to support thebail out saying its termsare too austere for theGreek economy to carry. It is rumoured that the

Is Change OnThe Way?

term of debt paybackmight be extended tosixty years in an effort tobring the IMF on side.Such a move may causeproblems for the GermanChancellor as sections ofher own party refused tosupport the current bail

out. Indeed thereare rumours

that the lady’sl e a d e r s h i pmay be forthe taking

should shecontinue with

her current posi-tions on Greece and

migration. The averagepolitical life on centrestage is circa twentyyears with those whomake it to the top jobserving for about twelveyears. Mrs Merkel hasten years done asChancellor. One of the challengesany leader faces is toknow when to go. I recallPatrick Lindsay, a FineGael heavyweight sayingback in the seventiesthat every politicianworth their salt wantedto be the leader of theirparty. Every party leaderought to alwaysremember that. Youngloyal politicians areprepared to wait but onlyfor so long. As they agethey find that youngermembers come frombehind and challengethem. So the experi-enced realise that if theyare to have their day theymust also challenge orbe part of history.Aspirant leaders particu-larly become uneasywhen an incumbentappears set on going onand on and on.

New Shop Open In Swords

Vapour Studio has opened a brandnew premises in Town Centre Mallin Swords, directly opposite RichiesBike Store. The shop specialises ine-cigarettes, which is providing asafe alternative to the harmfuleffects of cigarette smoking. The County Leader spoke to VapourStudio co-owners, Paul Clayton andLaurence Leonard, who were very upbeat about the kind ofservice they are providing to local residents.“This is all about finding a goodway to get people off harmfulsubstances, such as cigarettes andwe offer a solution to do that in avery cost effective way. We havealso found that recent healthstudies have shown that e-ciga-rettes are far less harmful for youthan traditional cigarettes.Basically, we are looking for a wayto save people a lot of money, aswell as saving them from very toxiccigarettes,” said Paul.He was very specific in his reasonsfor choosing Swords as a place toset up his business. He said, “In thefirst instance Swords is a beautifultown with a good population, aswell as a lot of smokers. We hopeto be in a position to cater for theirneeds along the way, so choosingto set up business here was aneasy decision for us,” he said.

Laurence explained that e-ciga-rettes are made up of nicotine, which satisfies the cravings ofsmokers, as well as flavourings andglycerine. The smoke is replaced bya vapour which dissipates in the air, leaving no odour behind – basicallylike steam. E-cigarettes are nowbecoming more and more accept-able and many pubs and restau-rants are coming around to theacceptance that they arecompletely different to traditionalcigarettes.”“The second hand vapour from e-cigarettes is not regarded as beingharmful to health, unlike secondhand smoke,” he said.CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber, TonyLambert congratulated Paul andLaurence on their new venture andsaid, “It is great to see such youngentrepreneurs, like Paul andLaurence who have opened VapourStudio in the Town Centre Mall inSwords. Their commitment todriving their business is infectiousand they deserve to succeed.Theirs is one of many new busi-nesses that have set up, or aresetting up in Swords and I hope thistrend will continue. The Chamberstrongly supports new start-upbusinesses who contribute greatlyto the economic development ofthe area,” he said.

Over the past number ofweeks, the County Leaderhas been giving you sometop tips to help you out onyour big day, and thisweek, we’re wrapping upour wedding guides bytalking about thosefinishing touches thatmake all the difference onyour big day:

Assign Someone ToThe Gifts

Have somebody there totake care of any cards orgifts you are given on theday. Ask a member of thebridal party to keep every-thing together for you,and if there’s any gifts, tojot down names of peopleon a notepad. This is agood way to make surenothing goes missing withall the hustle and bustleof the day.

Entertain The Kids

If you’re having children atyour wedding, you shouldthink about implementinga few structures to keepthem entertained. If youare having more than fourunder agers, hiring aprofessional to do theentertaining for you isimmediately going to takea whole heap off yourshoulders. You willabsolutely find one ofthese here in the NorthCounty. However if you’reonly having one or two, make up some goodiebags with little toys fromthe local shop a fewweeks before.

Prepare For TheWeather

Unfortunately, we live in amixed up country, weather wise and, tomake your day runsmoothly, you’ll have toprepare for the worst!Have somewhere indoorsthat you can take photosin case it rains, and makesure to get yourself apretty umbrella for gettingyou in and out of cars! Ifyou have the (nicer)complaint of too muchsun, maybe invest in abridal parasol, there aresome really pretty onesavailable in many bridalstores here in the NorthCounty. If it gets cold, maybe have a pair ofvintage gloves on hand tokeep warm.

Wedding Decorations

You can be as mad as youlike with this one! Just likewith wedding favours, there are a number ofvaried, beautiful decora-tions out there. Trypurchasing decorations

that are pastel blue, pinkor lavender. You couldalso put seasonal flowersup as centrepieces at thereception tables. Insteadof having wedding gueststhrow rice or bird seed, you could have themthrow rose petals. When itcomes to having a springthemed wedding, you areonly limited by your imag-ination!

Menu Ideas

The icing on the cake for aspring themed weddingcould be your menu. Tryserving fresh youngvegetables such as sugarsnap peas, baby carrots, baby asparagus or pota-toes. It’s often trickyenough trying to decidethe wedding menu, so ifyou’re unsure go for foodsthat you know generallypeople will eat. Get outthere and have a unique, special wedding usingsome of these ideas!Remember, you are onlylimited by your imagina-tion, so think of creativeways to make yourwedding special.

With summer drawing toa close, there’s still timeto get your garden inshape for the upcomingcooler season.A neatly kept garden isthe first impression avisitor gets of yourhouse. This first impres-sion is lasting and if yourgarden is not kept up toscratch, it’s unlikely thatyour home will be anybetter. Now is theperfect time to starttidying up your garden. If you need a majorclean-up, you will needto engage the servicesof a professional land-scaper. Luckily there are

many such companieshere in the NorthCounty, who will provideyou with a top classservice to make sureyour garden, theentrance to your homelooks at it’s best. Withsmaller gardens, youmay be in a position toundertake small jobs.Sowing a new lawn canbe undertaken now, withlocal garden centresready to provide youwith all your require-ments and to give excel-lent advice. Larger jobs, like paving and deckingwill give your house anadded dimension and

can provide that all-important outside room, which can be enjoyed inthe brighter evenings.

A Garden Pond

A water feature in yourgarden, such as a gardenpond, really adds alovely element to yoursurroundings. There areall kinds of differentways in which you caninclude a garden waterfeature in your garden. To decide which type ofgarden pond design, orwater feature suits yourown needs and your owngarden best, be sure to

call in some profes-sionals who will helpyou make the bestchoice. The NorthCounty boasts some ofthe most esteemedcompanies around, whowill come in and takecare of all your needs inthis regard. Some othertips to note whenchoosing your pond:take care if you’ve littleones running around, but as long as you do itdoesn’t mean you can’thave a pond or gardenwater feature - justchoose a water featurewith no standing wateror fit a pond with asturdy grille over thetop, for safety, or asecure fence all around. Choose a pond or waterfeature which suits thesize of your garden, andfits with your chosengarden theme. If you’reunsure of how you mightmaintain your pond, perhaps a smaller waterfeature is a good idea? These can be easier tomaintain, but still allowyou to enjoy water in

your garden. In terms ofpractical considerationsfor the pond, you should

try to site yours on alevel site, or at thebottom of a slopinggarden and away fromtrees (so that leavesdon’t fall into the water, and decay, and dirty thewater - use a net acrossyour pond if you can’tavoid trees).

Garden Fencing And Decking

The glory and versatilityof wood to create asuperior natural lookinggarden can be foundwhen constructingfencing, decking, lining,

panels, etc. All shapesand colours used go toproviding the specificmix of timber and woodfor that outdoor aspectof house and home toenjoy the summermonths to their fullest. Decking is incrediblyeffective in wet condi-tions as their designallows for maximumdrainage, meaning anend to boggy conditionsunder foot, meaningcleaner kids and no foot-prints through thehouse. Perfect forclimbing frames, tableand chairs for BBQevenings as well.Fencing can be cut toornate designs to setout a decorativeperimeter to any gardenwhich can also bestained to any shade ofteak, pine, etc. Professional deck layersand fence erectorsprovide a crucial profes-sional finish to a gardenor garden decking areafor BBQ’s, children’sswings, tables, chairsand more.

Henchy Wants MoreStaff For DonabateFacilityLocal councillor AdrianHenchy (FF), is keen tosee staffing levels atSophia Housing inDonabate increase. Sophia Housing providessupport for people who,for any number ofreasons, find themselvesout of their own home.Sophia Housing providesindividuals and familieswith support andhousing to meet theirown individual needs. The service is holistic in

nature, as Sophiasupport people to reachtheir own potential attheir own pace. SophiaHousing providesdifferent types of accom-modation and supportfor people who havedifferent housing andsupport needs. Henchy told the CountyLeader: “I had the oppor-tunity at this meeting tofind out for myself thesupport and service thestaff provide at Sophia

Housing in Donabate andto get their feedback onhow they are integrating

within the community. The meeting also gaveme the opportunity tovoice the concerns of thelocal community and theissues that have beenraised locally to me inregard to the SophiaHousing facility. The sizeof the facility is generallyat maximum capacitywith 21 families, all ofwhom are going througha very challenging andstressful times in theirlives. I would be stronglyof the view that thenature of the service andthe facility requires 24/7staffing cover, especiallyin the evenings and atweekends which can bea very vulnerable timefor individuals and fami-lies,” he explained.

“Following this meetingwith the staff of SophiaHousing, I have maderepresentation to boththe County Council andthe HSE requesting anurgent review of thestaffing levels at thisfacility and that thefacility is staffed 24/7and not just Monday-Friday 9-5,” saidHenchy. “I have no doubt that ifthe facility is staffed24/7 by properly trainedsocial care workers toprovide the help, support and rehabilita-tion for these vulnerableindividuals and families, the number of incidentsat evenings and week-ends will reduce,” heconcluded.

Reduced Commercial RatesFor Local Sports ClubsCertain sports clubs in the North County can now applyfor an exemption to commercial rates under a FiannaFáil plan that has been initiated in a new law.Local sports organisations which have a bar on theirpremises are now able to apply to have their commer-cial rates reduced, so that they would only apply to thelicensed premises, and not the full sports grounds.Applications are being accepted up to Tuesday,September 15th. Local Senator Darragh O’Brien (FF),has welcomed progress on the Fianna Fáil initiative andis urging all clubs in the North County to check if theycan avail of the reduced rates. “At the moment, clubswith licensed premises must pay commercial rates onall of their premises despite the fact that the vastmajority of their space is used for sporting and volun-tary purposes. This unfairly penalises clubs that havebars and I am delighted that the Government has seenthe merits in this common sense measure and includedit in the Valuation Act 2015,” O’Brien said. “In order toget the benefit of this partial exemption in commercialrates sports clubs need to be registered under theRegistration of Clubs Act, complete an application formand supply supporting documentation on or beforeSeptember 15th next,” he explained.“This is really positive initiative for clubs in the locality. Our sports clubs are part of the very fabric of our localcommunities and should continue to support them asbest we can. Legislative changes such as this can havea really positive impact and I’m pleased to see it beingimplemented,” concluded O’Brien.
