Mamasita’s gets new sign, new ice cream parlor opensDuring the last CCBA meeting, some membersvoiced a dislike of the homemade sign thatMama-Sita’s Restaurant had installed nearBurleson Street. Either coincidentally, or as aresponse, Mama-Sita’s had a sign maker createa colorful, professionally painted sign (above) totake the old one’s place. North Beach has its own ice cream parlor,Dot’z Dawgs & Drafts. In addition to delicioushand-dipped ice cream, it sells hot dogs, snacks, fruit cups and draft beer. Dot’z is the brain childof Mike Aston, owner of Pier 99.

Dot’z Dawgs & Drafts (above) on North Beach servesice cream and more. A North Beach resident, KaiMeyer (right), samples the new shop’s ice cream.

City installs new signsResidents who walk the Promenade have probably noticed the newwooden 4-inch by 4-inch posts placed alongside the sidewalk every100 yards or so. Each one will hold a new “Bay Beaches” sign (seephoto above). Some of the wording on the signs is not pertinent toNorth Beach (for example, we don’t have rip tides or dangerousundertows). However, mostly it states important rules. Unfortunately, the sign leaves off a few rules that are very perti-nent for our beach, such as “Harmful jellyfish might be present,” “Nocamping” and “No driving on the beach.” Many residents have no-ticed illegal campers and vehicles on the beach lately. The “No litter-ing” rule on the sign is an ordinance police can enforce to issueviolations to beach users for leaving their trash on the beach. Nowwe need increased police presence so the rules can be enforcedeffectively.

Beach, promenadeswamped this fall

Due to high tides this fall, water has been pooling regularly onthe beach. This makes it difficult for visitors and residents toreach the beach without wading through ankle-deep water.

Global warming? Let’s hope not. Whateverthe reason, much of North Beach has beenflooded with sea water this fall. Since the bigrains in October, the south end of the beachnear the Radisson has dried out only a fewtimes. At the north end, the vegetated areahas been underwater almost every day. Thenew Promenade has been flooded with waterin many places, which is both bad for theconcrete and leaves the sidewalk covered indebris. City crews cleaned the south half ofthe sidewalk but more than a week later thenorth end of the sidewalk is still strewn withdebris, especially near Surfside Park.
