Welcome to the 2013 Spring and Summer Leisure Guide. This publication has been in existence for over 30 years! The information on the pages inside continues to be valued resource to families in our community. The Guide provides one-stop shopping for leisure activities for everyone, young and old, to be active and healthy.

Last summer the Civic Square was completed. Located next to the Discovery Museum at the intersection of Oak and Ferguson Streets, the Civic Square is part of a multi-phase waterfront development encompassing a 33-acre park. This latest work also involved preparations for the expansion of the mini-train, lighting, trees and expanded parking lots. A new clock tower is a focal point in the Square which includes a large digital sign that can be programmed to advertise activities. The messaging is programmed through Heritage North Bay. If you’re interested contact the museum at 705-476-2323 for details.

The Square’s location at the center of Downtown and connected to the Waterfront underpass makes this new public space a hub of activity. It provides a beautiful setting for events, engaging residents on a daily basis, and distinguishing the city for visitors. The Square is part of a concept that connects the waterfront to the downtown and vice versa through the Pedestrian Underpass; provides easy access to the Discovery North Bay Museum; supports the creation of a downtown arts and entertainment district through the events and activities in the Square; and is accessible through its proximity to the North Bay Transit Terminal and new expanded parking lots. People at the square are only a few steps from food, the Capitol Centre’s music and theatre presentations, art galleries and unique shopping; and banking; all located in North Bay’s downtown.

Last summer North Bay’s Summer in the Park event relocated its concert venue next to the Civic Square for the first time. Feedback from those who attended was very positive and supported the move to the new space. The location provided a sloped venue with a great view of the stage. Located adjacent to the Civic Square and the Pedestrian Underpass it provided an open space where people attending the concerts could congregate and meet friends. The organizing committee is well underway to planning this summer’s event. Keep posted for ongoing entertainment and program announcements which are sure to please!

This summer the Farmers’ Market is moving to parking lot #10 which is located behind the new transit terminal and beside the Civic Square on Oak Street. From May long weekend to Thanksgiving, the popular Saturday morning market features fresh locally grown products, food producers, artisans and crafters. In the past the Market has been able to accommodate up to 30 booths. The new location will allow for the expansion of this number as well as lots of convenient parking in lot #2 beside the Museum.

The Civic Square is already living up to expectations that it will be a flexible open space that can accommodate a range of community and cultural events and a fun place for people. I hope to see you at one of the events happening in North Bay’s newest people place.

The Steve Omischl Sport Field Complex completed its first season of operation last summer. It was host to OFSSA Soccer which attracted teams representing schools from across the province. The provincial Ultimate Frisbee Championships were held at Omischl; the first time they have been held outside of the greater Toronto area. All in all the events hosted at the Complex resulted in 2500 visitors to North Bay. These types of events bring additional visitors and spending to local restaurants, malls and hotels which supports the local economy. We are looking for another great season this year, building on last year’s success.

For more information about these events or how you can use the Civic Square or the Steve Omischl Complex for your next event refer to the pages of this Guide or contact the Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services Department at 705-474-0626 ext. 2329.

Know what to do before disaster strikesEmergencies and disasters can happen at any time. This could mean utilities are out, roads are closed and we can’t get the crucial supplies we need. Local, provincial and federal officials prepare for emergencies and so should you!

In the event of an emergency or disaster, everyone should be prepared to take care of themselves and their families for up to three days.

Here’s how...• Post emergency telephone numbers• Check your home insurance• Prepare a 3-day emergency survival kit (including food and medications)• Choose an out of town emergency contact• Train family members in emergency procedures and have a plan

(including a designated meeting place to reunite with family)• Learn about your community’s emergency plan

Camp FrieNdsHello. My name is Bella. I am in grade 6 and this coming summer will be my 13th summer going to camp (Wabikon)! I have been going to camp for a LONG time, and people always ask me questions like “what’s the very best thing about camp?”. In all my camp years, the answer has always been the same. The people! Life-long friends from all around the world. Now you might be confused, you might say that you have friends everywhere too, so why are camp friends so special? Because camp brings out the best in you. It makes you look past everyone’s fancy cloths, and the brands, and where they’re from, and leaves behind the real them. That’s why camp friends are best!

My mom says “you are the best version of yourself at camp” and it’s true. I love how the people at camp aren’t only from Canada. They are from all over. And I mean ALL over! This year, I had friends from Australia, California, Israel, Mexico, and the United States! I also had counsellors from Spain, USA, Italy and Australia.

At school this year I had to do a test of about 28 countries around the world, and I found myself re-membering cabin 5’s fun rest hours where we would play cards. Except two of us spoke Spanish, two of us English and two of us French! All in all camp is an amazing experience where you can meet the most amazing people, and learn the most important life lessons. I hope I never stop going to camp.

CAMp WABIKON

Branch 23 has much to offer. Our fun side is we have donated over $43,000 during our last fiscal year to Big Brothers and Sisters, the VON, to Habitat for Humanity, to the Salvation Army, youth sports programs, bursaries and contests for youth education. We have organized cards (euchre, cribbage), various dart competitions, dart nights, ongoing track and field programs for the children, meat draws, Friday night suppers and dances, full course meals for lunches from Monday to Friday, New Year’s Eve dances. Our Ladies Auxiliary is constantly holding penny sales, bake sales and garage sales. We also provide meeting space to non-profit organizations free of charge.

Most of this is done with the hard work of volunteers, (our gold), but we are always looking for more volunteers who are wanting to give back to the community, espe-cially YOU with your new ideas and your vast experience.

The serious side of Branch 23 includes Remembrance Day, November 11. This is where we honour our new and old Veterans who fought for our freedom.

We do good work, it is extremely rewarding. If you share this with us, come out and JOIN THE LEGION.

Does the frosty winter weather have you yearning for those warm days in your garden? Or are you new to gardening and want to learn more? You may want to meet the friendly gardeners of the North Bay Horticultural Society. Join us at our monthly meetings where a wide range of interesting speakers and fellow gardeners share their knowledge. Have your gardening questions answered by one of the local Master Gardeners during the question and answer segment of the meeting. Participate in workshops, garden tours or learn about local gardening events or bus tours to horticultural shows.

As part of Ontario’s more than 250 Horticultural Societies our mission has been to promote civic beau-tification, education in all areas of gardening, and the conservation & preservation of the environment. Last year the North Bay Horticultural Society members celebrated their 50th anniversary.

For the youth we offer a ‘Seedling’ program in concert with the North Bay Public Library, where eager young gardeners can enjoy stories, learn about gardening, plant hanging salad baskets & gardens in the Sweetman Garden. Half of the time is spent at the library and the other half in the garden. Children between the ages of 6 and 12 will be able to register at the Children’s area in the North Bay Public Library during the month of April and enjoy weekly activities from early May to the beginning of September.

Our popular Plant Sale will be held on May 25th at Christ Church on Vimy Street.

Our civic beautification projects have included tree plantings at the North Bay & District Hospital, Canadore & Nipissing gardens by the pond, the Upper Algonquin Avenue Garden and the Chamber of Commerce flower pots.

We meet the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:00 at Christ Church on Vimy Street. Meetings are not held in July, August, December & January. Attend an executive meeting prior to the General Meeting, and see firsthand what goes on in planning events. By “getting your feet wet”, your help would be greatly welcomed. It’s fun, you learn and you feel like you have “gotten your hands dirty” all before planting season. Members of the Society also receive our Green Thumb newsletter with timely local gardening tips and news.

Membership in the Society is just $10 per person or $15.00 for families.

Guests are always welcome to our meetings, so why don’t you give us a try!

Summer Camp – A Sound Investment in Youth By: Mari-Beth Crysler Assistant Director, Camp Wabikon Having spent over 30 summers at camp, as a camper, counsellor and director, I was pleased to read the findings of a recent study called The Canadian Summer Camp Research Project (link below). This study, a collaborative project by the University of Waterloo and the Canadian Camping Association, confirms what camp directors like myself have been proudly telling parents for years. Participation in provincially accredited camps promotes positive change in five key areas of development.

1. Social  integration  and  citizenship  2. Environmental  awareness  3. Attitudes  towards  physical  activity  4. Emotional  intelligence  5. Self-‐confidence  and  personal  development

I  have  seen  the  surprise  on  a  parent’s  face  as  they  research  summer  camp  options  and  calculate  the  per  day  price  of  their  child’s  stay  at  camp.  However,  keeping  an  open  mind,  I  ask  you  to  consider  the  following.  Your  camp  fees  are  an  investment  in  your  child,  and  the  ROI  is  very  promising!    As  director  of  a  camp  with  international  clientele,  social  integration  and  citizenship  are  an  important  aspect  of  each  summer.  Opinions,  attitudes  and  perceptions,  barriers  which  would  otherwise  act  as  hurdles  for  campers  from  different  backgrounds,  are  significantly  diminished  by  the  level  playing  field  of  camp’s  social  scene.  Campers  feel  comfortable  to  interact,  connect,  befriend  and  learn  about  peers  from  around  the  world.  They  experience  the  benefits  of  camp  together.    The  mental  and  physical  well  being  of  our  campers  is  enhanced  by  their  participation  in  an  active,  outdoor  program.  Camp’s  location  on  an  island  in  northern  Ontario,  often  remarked  on  by  parents  as  breath-‐taking  and  serene,  does  not  go  unnoticed  by  campers  both  young  and  old.  Exposure  to  and  appreciation  of  the  beauty  around  them  and  the  program  within  which  they  choose  to  participate,  promotes  both  environmental  awareness  as  well  as  a  positive  attitude  toward  physical  activity.      Children  who  attend  summer  camp  are  given  a  unique  opportunity  to  thrive  in  a  safe  and  nurturing  environment.  Campers  feel  a  sense  of  ownership  of  “their  camp”.  They  experience  an  unsurpassed  sense  of  personal  freedom  and  empowerment.  In  turn,  this  comfort  and  trust  facilitates  an  increase  in  self-‐confidence,  independence  and  emotional  intelligence.  I  have  witnessed  this  growth  in  countless  campers,  including  my  own  children.  Confidence  and  enthusiasm  combine  and  empower  campers  to  undertake  new  challenges,  explore  their  interests  and  expand  their  abilities.  Finding  success  in  these  endeavors,  or  just  having  had  the  courage  to  try,  further  fosters  their  self-‐worth  and  personal  development.    Viewed  through  the  lens  of  these  five  key  areas,  sending  a  child  to  camp  becomes  an  enticing  and  promising  investment  with  rich  potential.  In  truth,  the  return  on  investment  is  priceless;  a  flourish  of  developmental  growth  that  continues  to  strengthen  the  confidence  and  capabilities  in  youth  long  after  the  final  campfire  and  bus  ride  home.       Link to The Canadian Summer Camp Research Project http://www.ccamping.org/_customelements/uploadedResources/CSCRPReportreduced.pdf
