A Record of Excellence North American Stainless, founded in 1990, is fulfilling its promise to be the finest stainless steel mill in the Western Hemisphere.
Situated on 1400 acres in Carroll County, Kentucky, NAS is owned by Acerinox, SA. The initial facility and the carefully planned expansion phases that have followed are all part of a coordinated and comprehensive plan to create the premier facility of its kind. The expansions have broadened the capabili-ties of the operation and greatly increased capacity. Because each phase was envisioned before the first phase construction began, the expansion plan has been efficient and cost-effective.

the waterways.
Two buildi ng expansions took place in 1995. Over 130,000 square feet were added to the facility. This new space accommodated two major equipment purchases - our second cold rolling mill and a second slitter and packaging line.
This new Sendzimir mill is also 60” wide and is rated to cold roll material from .014 to .250” thick. The mill features outstanding shape and thickness controls, as well as a robotic roll changer.
Consistent Improvement 1995 saw a significant expansion at North American Stainless. This expansion included construction of a barge

A Triumphant Start In 1990, a 1000 acre piece of land in Carroll County, Kentucky was purchased by Acerinox, SA and Armco Advanced Materials. This site would soon become the home of North American Stainless, the most advanced stainless steel facility in North America.
Construction began quickly and material began rolling off the mill in 1993. The original equipment at NAS included two annealing and pickling lines, a 60” wide Sendzimir mill, a grind/polish line and a slitter.
One of the annealing lines features an in-line skin pass mill and edge trimmers that enable NAS to ship material directly from this line, saving processing and handling time. The 60” Sendzimir mill offers production speeds that surpass any other line in the country. The uniform deflection of the housing under

load, across the mill width, results in exceptional flatness control. Mathematical rolling models are used to enable us to repeat with remarkable consistency the tolerances that our customers demand.
The polishing line has eight polishing heads and is a wet polishing unit. This allows us to offer our cus-tomers an exceptionally high quality polished finish that is consistent from coil to coil.

Meeting High Expectations The aggressive growth plan continued in 1996, when the decision was made to invest $264 million in a hot rolling facility. The major pieces of equipment in this facility are the slab grinder, reheating furnace, roughing mill, Steckel mill and downcoiler.
The hot rolling facility gives NAS much greater flexibility in the production of stainless sheet. NAS begins the production process by grinding the slab, as needed, to remove surface defects. The reheat furnace heats incoming slabs to temperatures up to 2370° F. The roughing mill is a reversing mill that reduces the product. The Steckel mill then reduces the hot band to final hot rolled gauge. The mill can
process 220 tons per hour, producing coils weighing up to 38 tons, widths up to 5 feet, and thicknesses from .078 to .500 inches in coiles and up to 2 inches in discrete plate.

The Plate Shop-Discrete Plate During the second quarter of 2001 North American Stainless introduced a new Plate Shop. The Plate Shop is responsible for process-ing hot rolled plate directly from the Steckel Mill. The length of the plates vary from 6.5 to 41 ft. (2 to 12.5 m) and range in thickness from 0.48 to 2.0 in. (12 to 50 mm). The process begins by annealing the plates in the furnace, which operates at 2,000º F (1100ºC). After the annealing process the plates are water cooled. The plates are leveled to state of art tolerances, then cut to length using our dividing shear for plate up to 1 inch (26 mm) in thickness. The 600 amp plasma cutter is used for cutting all widths and the lengths, when the gauge exceeds 1 inch (26mm).
The sized plates are then taken to the verti-cal pickling line. The pickling line begins with the shot blast equipment where the plates are descaled. From the shot blaster the plates enter the acid pickling section. The pickling section utilizes both Hydrofluoric and Nitric acids. The pickled plates then travel through the inspection tables on to packaging and shipping.
Phase V Expansions Phase VI ExpansionsThe Melt Shop On February 2, 2002 NAS started production of the Melt Shop. The melt shop includes the follow process equipment: electric arc furnace(EAF), argon oxygen decarburization(AOD) converter, ladle stir and treatment station (LSS) and the con-tinuous casting machine(CCM). The process starts by charging the scrap & ferroalloy additions
into the EAF. The EAF then melts the heat with a 135/155 MVA transformer. The heat is then tapped at around 140MT and transferred to the AOD converter. In the AOD process the carbon is reduced with a combination of side tuyeres and top lance O2 blowing. During and after carbon removal the necessary alloy additions are made to meet the final chemistry

specification. The heat is then tapped with at around 150MT and transfer to the LSS. At the LSS the heat is bottom and/or top stirred with Argon to homogenize and reach the desired temperature. Alloy additions can also

and 7-14 m (23-45 ft.) in length. The caster utilizes a vertical mold with a hydraulic oscillator. These features along with a metallurgical length of 24.6m allows the CCM to produce a good quality slab at high speeds. 1.6 m/min top speed in Austenitic grades and 1.5 m/min in Ferritic grades.
With the above equipment the rated melt shop capacity is 800,000 tons/year. This is possible due to the EAF tap-tap times of 60 minutes, the AOD tap-tap times of 60 minutes and the possibility of turning around the caster in less than 30 minutes.

technology to ensure that it meets all customer requirements. Our idea of quality is not just the surface quality of the steel. We also consider gauge, width, steel type, mechanical properties, fin-ish, weight, ID, delivery date, and any customer requirement as we evaluate the quality of our output. The laboratory itself is primarily concerned with verification of mechanical and chemical properties of the steel.

Multiple samples from each coil, taken after each annealing process and after dividing/slitting operations, are tested for ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, percent elongation, bend, corrosion and chemistry. Results from testing are com-pared to ASTM, ASME, customer and NAS specifications to determine fitness for particular applications. Other tests such as grain size, reduction of area, and surface roughness are performed at the request of the customer. Chemical composition of the steel is checked using a Siemens x-ray spectrometer, Leco carbon/sulfur analyzer, and Leco nitrogen/oxygen analyzer. Carbon, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, nitrogen, niobium, nickel, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, tin, titanium, and vanadium content are analyzed to allow positive product identification and traceability. The laboratory complies with all requirements of the North American quality system and helps to ensure continued customer satisfaction as well as compliance to the ISO 9001:2000 standard.
