Aspheric Optics: Design, Fabrication, and TestThis course will provide attendees with a broad and useful understanding ofaspheric surfaces and components. Aspheric or non-spherical surfaces in alens or mirror system can bring significant benefits to the optical perfor-mance. This is not without the liabilities of added cost, delivery time, andeven producibility. The course will begin with lens design, and specificallyhow and when to incorporate aspherics into a variety of lens design forms. We discuss what aspherics will do for a design, and also what they will notdo. We then will discuss how aspheric surfaces are manufactured along withrecommendations on how to specify aspherics. Several methods for pre-dicting performance for systems with asphere induced wavefront irregulari-ties will be shown. We also will discuss the testing of aspherics.

Understanding Scratch and Dig SpecificationsSurface imperfection specifications (i.e. Scratch-Dig) are among the mostmisunderstood, misinterpreted, and ambiguous of all optics componentspecifications. This course provides attendees with an understanding ofthe source of ambiguity in surface imperfection specifications, and providesthe context needed to properly specify surface imperfections using a vari-ety of specification standards, and to evaluate a given optic to a particularlevel of surface imperfection specification. The course will focus on the dif-ferences and application of the Mil-PRF-13830, ISO 10110-7, and BSR/OP1.002. Many practical and useful specification examples are includedthroughout, as well as a hands-on demonstration on visual comparison evalu-ation techniques.LEARNING OUTCOMESThis course will enable you to:• describe the various surface imperfection specifications that exist today• compose a meaningful surface imperfection specification for cosmetic

imperfections using ISO, ANSI, or Mil standards• identify the different illumination methods and comparison standards

for evaluation• demonstrate a surface imperfection visual inspection• understand the options available for controlling surface imperfections in

a vendor/supplier relationshipINTENDED AUDIENCEThis material is intended for anyone who needs specify, quote, or evaluateoptics for surface imperfections. Those who either design their own optics orwho are responsible for optics quality control will find this course valuable.INSTRUCTORDavid Aikens is the Director of Metrology Operations at Zygo Corporation, and has been designing and specifying optics for more than 20 years. Hehas been active in the development of surface imperfection standards since1996, and is currently serving as Chairman of the Board for the ANSI accred-ited Optics and Electro-Optics Standards Council, and is a technical advisorfor the American delegation to ISO TAG TC172.

The course price includes a copy of the latest ANSI approved surface imper-fections specification standard.

THE AMERICAN PRECISION OPTICS MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION

Join APOMA Today!OUR MISSION STATEMENTAPOMA represents a broad constituency of precision optics manufacturers, and the supporting industry along with academic associates, whose mutualinterest is the advancement and expansion of optics manufacturing andtechnology. APOMA is pledged to act on behalf of its members, whosecommon interests are far more important than the small differences that havefor too long fragmented the industry. Common concern and cooperation arethe essential foundation of sustaining a viable technology base.

INDUSTRY ADVOCATEIn 1988, APOMA wrote a comprehensive industrial modernization proposaladvocating the effective cooperation of industry, academia and government.A key element of the proposal was the foundation of the Center for OpticsManufacturing (COM), located at the University of Rochester, whichfacilitates modernization and provides continuing assistance for the opticalindustry. Other areas that receive APOMA support are: Optical Standards,Optical Fabrication Training and Student Travel to Optical Fabrication andTesting seminars.

MEETINGSAPOMA schedules at least two national meetings each year. Meeting datesand times conveniently coincide with the major conferences of the SPIE andOSA. Members are advised of the meeting day and time.

PUBLICATIONSMembers receive a newsletter discussing issues, activities, meeting dates anditems of critical interest.

OBJECTIVES• Provide a forum for

In the Beginning

On 1 July 1955, fiftyinnovative people met at arestaurant in Studio City,California, to discuss theneed for a professionalsociety dedicated to theadvancement of opticallybased test andmeasurement equipment.

Dynamic technological advancements hadcreated a need for equipment to test andmeasure aircraft, missile, and rocketflights. In August of 1955, seventy-fourattendees participated in the first formalmeeting of “SPIE-Society of Photo-OpticalInstrumentation Engineers” at the OldCarolina Pines Restaurant on Melrose inHollywood. Richard Councilman waselected President; Robert Minter, VicePresident; Robert Betty, Secretary;Stanley Baker, Treasurer; and RobertWoltz, Program Chairman.

This small pioneering group, along withother volunteers, met once or twicemonthly to organize the details of thisnew Society, which would one daybecome the repository of the work ofmore than 154,000 authors from 122countries around the world.

Five decades after its inception, thoughthe technologies and their applicationshave continued to evolve, the Society’smission has remained much the same.SPIE continues to serve the scientific andengineering community with enthusiasmand commitment.

SPIE has become the largestinternational force for the exchange, collection and dissemination ofknowledge in optics, photonics andimaging. Today, SPIE is the growinglegacy of all those who seek to learn, discover and innovate.

We celebrate this Golden Anniversaryyear with memories of our past thatgive power to our future.
