SPECIALISTAWJC - Working Principle
The high pressure pump (diesel powered) supplies water <45 , 95> ltr/min @ typically <600 ,1400> bar to the “mixer”.
Inside the mixer the HP flow is directed via a pressure vessel containing the abrasives (copper slag). The water and solids (two phase flow) leaving the mixer is directed to the cutting tool, in this case via an umbilical (slurry cutting).
There is typically 1 hour worth of abrasives inside a pressure vessel. When emptied it will be de -pressurized and refilled from the storage on top of the container.
There is a series of AWJC systems on the market and NCA has its own as well as off-the-shelf-systems.
NCA uses it’s heavy duty system for sub sea cutting (inhouse design) .

SPECIALISTWorking Principle
The cutting technology
Abrasive Water Jet Cutting is well developed and used by numerous companies all over the world. The cutting technique can be compared to sand blasting with two fundamental differences:
-The carrier fluid is water
- The jet (particle flow) is concentrated
Testing and design
NCA spends significant resources each year for testing and design of AWJC technology including improvements of the basic spread, the tooling packages and cutting techniques. NCA’s results from internal cutting of multistring conductors using AWJ is unmatched in the industry.

SPECIALISTChip cutting - Working Principle
Guillotine saw cutting or rotating steel based
tools.
Remove the material by removing fragments or
lengths (chip or swarf).
Whilst the rotating cutting steel principle has a
limitation in wall thickness and material, the
guillotine saw will cut string and contents
simultaneously.
Chip cutting tools are normally equipped with a
feeding mechanism and is often suitable for
remote operation.
NCA has a in-house patented guillotine saw
design. Other chip type cutting tools is readily
available off the shelf .

Diamond Wire Cutting
• 2 main principles of tools:
– 1. Variable loop system with wire tensioning
– 2. Fixed loop system with hydraulic feeding
• Advantages
– Works well on both single string, multistring, composite or solid materials
– Flexible with respect to different shapes to be cut
• Disadvantages
– Vulnerable to compression
– Not cold cutting – creates sparks
• Fixed loop systems are available for ROV installation.

Hydraulic shear
• Available in sizes up to 48”
• Advantages
– Powerful
– Works on cement and steel
• Disadvantages
– Vulnerable to collapse in pipe (small wall thickness)
– Very heavy
– Operational limitations offshore (installation heave)
– Large power pack required
• Cutting time
– Typically < 90 sec
