“Values” by Ruth Maples, Executive Director of LDC 9/99Would I want my child to live on this residence?

Do clothing & grooming reflect how I would want my family to look?

Do I make a difference in this person’s quality of life?

Would I or my child enjoy this meal?

Do I need to improve people’s safety?

Do I treat and expect others to treat people with dignity & respect?

Is the recreation, work, school experience providing opportunities for fun, choice, learning, pay?

By whatever means a person communicates, do I listen & hear what they are telling me?

Do I give positive and constructive feedback to clients?

Normal Respect

Respect & consideration:– choices, wishes, and desires – & to their right to self-determination

Sensitivity when they cannot communicate Consideration of their belongings –

– Allow them to buy their own clothing and furniture at stores* Participate in committees & planning

– (Empowerment) People First Avoid the “Batch” process
