Sun Life Advisors Ron Kowalsky, Brent McKay Help kick off Delhi High School Breakfast Program“I first learned of this program when my daughter in law Susan (Kowalsky) mentioned it to me,” said Sun Life Advisor Ron Kowalsky of Simcoe. “I thought it sounded like a terrific idea.”
“Sun life is always promoting healthy lifestyles and living,” added Brent McKay of McKay Financial, the other Sun Life advisor helping to fund the kick off to the project.
“So when Ron approached me, I was happy to help out.” McKay Financial has offices in both Simcoe and Delhi.
“We are both life long residents of Norfolk,” Kowalsky said. “And supporting local schools especially with a program such as this, is important to Brent and I,” the Simcoe Sun Life advisor added.
“I know Susan and Judy Schonberger are very excited about it. It also shows that Delhi high school is a strong, thriving institution. McKay added.
“Our Financial Centre has been in Delhi since my grandfather ran it,” McKay said. “We believe very strongly in Delhi and a lot of people have fought to keep DDSS open over the years. Efforts like this from the teachers and department heads shows the hard work, dedication and desire of the staff is proof
positive of the vitality and spirit at DDSS,” McKay said.
Sun Life Financial is a leading Canadian Financial Institution, established in 1865 with more than 3,300 advisors across Canada.

By Dave ScottFor the past month my daughter has been sending letters to the Prime Minister… she wants to know why the government is not doing more about child soldiers around the world… she felt sending letters as often as she could, over and over might get her a response… so far… nothing.
Sunday, she prepared another bunch of letters to go out this week… I can tell her frustration is
mounting… she asked, ‘What else I can do?’
She joked around, mentioning that perhaps we should drive to Ottawa at some point and wait outside the PM’s house… ‘He has to come home sometime…’ she said.
I explained that these things take time… for the government to respond… then I thought to myself… huh, times are changing.
Today, society kinda expects
instant results… there is no wait… I mean communication is a prime example… cell phones, computers, Facebook, twitter… our kids view change as something that gets done… quickly… us older folks… well, we had to watch change occur in the world at a lot slower pace. A prime example is Egypt’s Facebook Revolution… one women started it and it is believed to be one of the main sparks of the revolution. Unfortunately, it was not without violence… but in the end, the government stepped down.
Now I don’t think that would happen in Canada, for the most part out demonstrations are peaceful… but listening to my daughter made me realize… governments around the world need to start remembering they work for the people… the up and coming generations are not going to settle for the status quo. For them, they want results and action… so to the Prime Minster… perhaps you could send a letter back… because I don’t think I want to drive to Ottawa and wait on your doorstep for you!

Congratulations to the Norfolk HERicanes Red Peewee HL team for becoming the champions of the Hamilton Hawkey Tournament this past weekend.
The girls had an excellent round robin, winning 2 of 3 games to put them into the final. They faced the only team they had lost to in the tournament and the girls
gave this game everything they had. Goaltender Nicole Samborski, pulled up from the Atom team, played stellar in net to keep the girls in the game. At the end of 3 periods, it was tied 0-0. Overtime still produced no score and so it was on to a shoot out. Nicole managed
to shut the other team down, while Emily Shuttleworth fired in the only goal for the HERicane side! What a game… what a team! Congratulations girls and congratulations coaches on an excellent tournament and an excellent season!
Back row, left to right: Coach Ron Loucks, Trainer Nora McCulla, Assistant Coach Ed Samborski, Assistant Coach John Cook, (missing Trainer Shellie Millson).
Middle row: Marissa Eikelboom, Emily Shuttleworth, Erin Benko, Madison Loucks, Julia Samborski, and Nicole Samborski. Front row: Riley Awalt,
Bianca Bowen, Marissa McDonnell, Jamie Millson, Lauren Moore, Lexi Cook, and Tegan Giles.

By Dave ScottThe Norfolk Harvesters Rugby Club hosted a Rugby skills clinic Saturday afternoon in Waterford. The one day clinic was an introduction to the sport for high school students… players from Delhi, Waterford, and both Simcoe schools partook in the day’s training.
Ron Brookshaw, president for the Harvesters, stated that the clinic was teaching the fundamentals of the sport… tackling, passing, line-outs, and rucking. The goal of the clinic was to encourage enough players to come out so that two (under 18) teams could be formed (one girls and one boys). By the looks of the turnout… the Harvesters may be well on their way to having a couple of junior clubs. Ron explained that anyone over the age of fourteen can play and that more players are welcome to come out. The senior team acts as mentors; helping to train
and coach the younger players… and with the senior team being around since the year 2000, these men and women have a very good grasp of the game.
Speaking of the senior team… the men and women I met really enjoy their sport… and are willing to put the time in to teach others and nurture the students of the game along.
You can definitely see the bond among the group… besides the camaraderie the sport offers great physical training, strength, endurance, quickness and good old physical contact.
If you are interested in playing (young or old) call Ron at 519-443-0743 for more details… or better yet, stop by Waterford high school April 21st and watch the Harvesters play against Highland (game time is 1pm).

By Claire SenkoSarah Slean and Emily Carr, oh my! Two, count 'em, TWO Canadian icons are appearing on The Old Town Hall stage this month!
First up, "one of Canada's most compelling acts" (Time Magazine), singer-songwriter Sarah Slean performs in Waterford on Saturday April 21. And dear Nor-Folks: This show is almost sold out; if you haven't purchased your tickets yet, now is the time to do so. We have a lot of city folk coming... and each time I sell a ticket to a Torontonian I'm all mixed up happy and sad... Happy that people from afar are discovering our beautiful town and venue, but sad there's another ticket that *POOF!* won't be available to a last-minute local! If you want to experience a rare, up close and personal concert featuring one of Canada's finest performing artists at a fantastic price right in your own backyard, act quickly!
Next up, Emily Carr! And (smile) there's a little story behind Ms. Carr's upcoming "appearance" on The Old Town Hall stage:
Last fall, I stumbled onto a book that was sitting in a box in the basement of the Old Town Hall. There are hundreds of books down there, waiting to be sorted and then shelved in the Hall's used bookstore. This particular volume, The Magnificent Voyage of Emily Carr, grabbed my attention, as I had JUST returned from a spontaneous visit to the Art Gallery of Ontario... where I had unexpectedly, sweetly and thoroughly renewed my love of Emily Carr's paintings. I picked up the book and flipped it open only to discover it was a SCRIPT! A three-act play by Governor General's Award winning playwright Jovette Marchessault. Of course, it was meant to be...
Thanks to a hard working cast, some key behind-the-scenes volunteers, and the guidance of local theatre professional Elana Post, The Old Town Hall is bringing this exquisite work of literary art to life in two weeks. The Magnificent Voyage of Emily Carr explores the inner life of Canada's most beloved female artist; the world of her imagination, perceptions, and projections; and her physical, emotional and spiritual interactions
with the important beings in her life: her prim sister Lizzie; Sophie, her wise and long-suffering Amerindian friend; the fascinating Lawren Harris from the Group of Seven; and lastly, The Soul Tuner and The Goddess D'Sonoqua, who bring her wisdom and compassion from another realm.
The Magnificent Voyage of Emily Carr runs April 27, 28, and 29th.
Before I sign off, I want to leave you with a little bit of Emily and a little bit of Sarah to tuck into your hearts until we meet again.
"Look at the earth crowded with growth, new and old bursting from their strong roots hidden in the silent, live ground, each seed according to its own kind... each one knowing what to do, each one demanding its own rights on the earth... So, artist, you too from the deeps of your soul... let your roots creep forth, gaining strength." (Emily Carr)
"Love, the only alchemy / Love, the killer of despair / Love, the patient samurai / Love, the armour angels wear / Love. / Love will make your eyes clear / the order of the universe / the only reason we are here." (Sarah Slean)
The Waterford Old Town Hall is a community funded, nonprofit venue. For information on the Sarah Slean concert, The
Magnificent Voyage of Emily Carr play, the Old Town Hall Bookstore, or any other program/event at the Hall, call 519.443.0113/ visit www.oldtownhall.org.

Both ladies explained that the breakfast program was already in its second week and that it has been a big success… noting that the students in rural schools tend to have longer days with busing… so the breakfast program helps those students who
may have missed breakfast… plus, during the day in certain locations of the school, kids can pick up an apple to snack on.
Also helping out with the breakfast program is Dave’s Variety, Gunn Cheese and a number of parents who have made food donations as well.
The breakfast program at Delhi is part of the Child Nutrition Network.
The Costigan family would like to thank Trevor Frankling and Boston Pizza for their support of our very successful fundraiser for our niece, Tara Bourque. It was truly appreciated.Photo, left to right: Mike, Kevin, Gary, and Marlene Costigan with Trevor Frankling and the $2000 donation.
Process Provides an Opportunity to Map out Future Improvements Courtesy of Norfolk General HospitalOn March 26 – 29 four surveyors from Accreditation Canada were on-site at Norfolk General Hospital meeting with teams of staff and physicians as the hospital seeks to renew its accreditation award. The Accreditation Survey is part of the hospital’s ongoing commitment to providing high quality patient care. NGH last participated in the accreditation survey in 2009 and received a three year award at that time.
Although Accreditation Canada’s final report recommendations will not be available for another few weeks, early feedback from the surveyor’s shows that NGH has made significant progress on many
of its priorities such as:
• Developing effective partnerships with a wide variety of community partners to ensure that our patients receive the right care in the right place at the right time.
• The Infection Prevention and Control team has made significant progress, particularly in increasing hand hygiene awareness, education, and compliance.
• Staff members across the hospital were recognized for their commitment to ensuring safe patient care. The surveyors particularly noted the falls prevention strategy as a successful initiative.
Conclusions presented by the surveyors to hospital personnel suggest that staff is very positive about their work environment. John Ruetz, lead accreditation surveyor, noted that “everyone was easy to speak with, transparent,
open, and excited to give answers. There was also a willingness to listen and ask questions too. That’s always a good sign of an engaged organization.”
“The accreditation process is about celebrating your successes, but also about learning about where you can invest your efforts to continue to do better,” said Kelly Isfan, NGH president & CEO. “I’m very excited about upcoming strategic planning and focusing on the things we are going to improve on, not only for accreditation, but for our patients and our staff members.” said Isfan.
Accreditation Canada is the major national accrediting body for health service organizations across Canada. The accreditation program is designed to assist health service providers to drive improvements in health care through self-assessment and evaluation.
During the on-site visit, surveyors met with a broad spectrum of people from different areas of the hospital and the community, including board members and administrative staff, physicians, caregivers, human resources people, information management specialists, patients and family members, as well as community partners, to discuss their experiences, perceptions and expectations.
The accreditation process reviewed NGH performance on 1676 applicable criteria across eight dimensions of quality. NGH met 96% of these criteria. “Participation in accreditation enables the hospital to keep ‘raising the bar’ and improve services. I’m really eager to get on with the work at hand,” said Isfan. The hospital will soon receive the final accreditation report and have the opportunity to map out future improvements.

By MARG WERDEN Green Living ShowAs an alternative to staying around for this month’s Friday the 13th extravaganza, the sixth annual Green Living Show in Toronto makes a great destination. Running from April 13 to 15 at the Direct Energy Centre at Exhibition Place, the Green Living Show is a consumer show dedicated to educating the public about easy and workable solutions for leading a sustainable lifestyle. Anyone interested in lightening his or her environmental footprint will be able to learn about products and get inspiration to help save the planet and money from more than 400 “green-screened” exhibitors. The three-day event offers innovative products, demonstrations and ideas in the areas of health, home, automotive, décor, fashion and food.
One of the attractions at this year’s show is DAS HAUS, a traveling pavilion here for a limited time from Germany. DAS HAUS demonstrates advanced technologies for home construction and solar energy and shares German innovations
that achieve sustainable home construction and operational energy savings. It’s about the future of sustainable building and the resources and integration needed to reach that future.
For the first time, the Green Living Show will include a Farmers’ Market, in which vendors will be selling organic and sustainable produce. Among these products will be some from the Norfolk area including Texas longhorn beef from YU Ranch near Courtland and peanuts from Kernal Peanuts in Vittoria. A number of chefs will be on hand to present cooking demonstrations using a wide variety of these products.
The show will also feature nature exhibits, wildlife species-saving ideas, eco vehicles, and off-the-grid technologies.
Admission to the show is $15, but entry is free if you bring in a piece of e-waste for recycling, courtesy of Samsung Canada. In 2011, show visitors brought in 40,000 lbs of e-waste. A free ticket is also available through Bird Studies Canada at http://www.bsc-eoc.

Paying for our mild winter and early springNot having to shovel a lot of snow was nice. The balmy weather in March was fantastic. Being able to
get out early to get the gardens in shape was wonderful. Now we have to pay for all those privileges.
The mosquitoes and black flies are already out in full force and it may be a long itchy summer for some of us. Mosquito control experts are already warning about the onslaught of biting mosquitoes that is sure to follow the unusually warm weather we experienced. According to one expert, Jonathan Cohen, mosquito control expert and president of Summit Responsible Solutions which makes Mosquito Dunks, a biological mosquito control product, “Mosquito breeding season typically begins with the onset of warmer temperatures and because of this year's early spring, mosquito populations will be increasing sooner and faster. This summer could become the worst mosquito summer ever in the U.S. and Canada.”
More mosquitoes will mean more bites, as well as increasing the chances of transmitting mosquito-borne diseases such as West Nile virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis and canine heartworm disease.
To reduce mosquito breeding areas, homeowners are advised to be vigilant in eliminating places where water can collect and stand in their yards and gardens. "Mosquitoes can breed in a coffee cup of standing water in less than a week," says Cohen.
Dispose of tin cans, plastic containers, old tires and other items that can collect water. Turn over wheelbarrows and empty children's wading pools. Clean clogged roof gutters, which can become prime mosquito-breeding pools. Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers that are left outdoors. Periodically empty the saucers under ceramic pots to make sure they are not harbouring mosquito larvae.
To reduce the chances of getting mosquito bites, limit your outdoor activities during the times of day when mosquitoes are most active - an hour before and after dawn and an hour before and after dusk. Also, don't forget that clothing is an excellent barrier between you and a mosquito. Wear clothing that will protect more of your body, such as long-sleeved shirts and long pants, especially during the evening hours.

By Dave ScottWe really need to stand up and take notice of the wonderful athletes in our local Special Olympics program. They are preparing for the Provincial Championships again this year. Last week, I caught up with Shirley Shaw, Kim Deelen and a group of athletes; grabbed a photo and chatted about this year’s team.
This year nine athletes will be participating from May 31st to June 3rd in Kingston Ontario and are planning on taking the train from Brantford.
The team consists of four swimmers, Aimee Buckborough, Aleigha Garrard, Kristy Long and Laura White. Coaches are Linda Bell, Kim Deelen, Gary Haskett and Shirley Shaw.
Over on the five-pin bowling team, are Susan Burke, Justin Hayward, Jason Gordy and Stephen Parkes; their coach is Karen Hayward. Junior Chiasson will represent the ten-pin category.
Shirley reminded me that these athletes train up to three times a week to prepare for the games and that the dedication of the coaches is outstanding. The games themselves are an awesome, overwhelming experience for the athletes as they participate with other athletes from all over the province.
This year you can follow the games from right here at home. Just log onto www.SPECIALOLYMPICS2012GAMES.com and cheer on the athletes that make Norfolk proud.
To the team good luck and enjoy!
PS. Watch for McHappy Day on May 2nd! This year’s Simcoe Special Olympics Torch Run will be Wednesday May16th. If you are interested in volunteering for the event or participating please contact Kim Deelen at 519-426-3561 ext 252 or at [email protected].

Newly renovated Doctor’s office located adjacent to Roulston’s Port DoverCourtesy of Roulston’s PharmacyRoulston’s Pharmacy, an independently owned and operated pharmacy group in Norfolk County, and a part of the I.D.A. banner program, today announced a new addition to their Main Street Port Dover location. Dr. Harold Hynscht, who has served his patients well for many years out of the St. George Street Medical Centre, will relocate to a newly created Doctor’s office in the space adjacent to Roulston’s.
The new office will allow Dr. Hynscht to continue to practice medicine in Port Dover, in a large and modern office space. Roulston’s ownership
feels that the office will be an asset to Port Dover’s downtown area, and that patients will appreciate the convenient location and ample parking.
“We are very pleased to announce our plans to create a new Doctor’s office in downtown Port Dover,” said Blair Snow, Co-Owner, Roulston’s Pharmacy. “The office that we are renovating for Dr. Hynscht will be designed to his specifications, and will be very patient friendly. Roulston’s is happy to be a long standing provider of quality patient care in Norfolk County, and our partnership with Dr. Hynscht will allow us to continue that tradition.” Snow noted, “Port Dover’s downtown is experiencing new development, and we are excited to be a
part of that.”
If the development progresses on schedule, it is anticipated that Dr. Hynscht’s new office will be completed by June this year.
About Roulston’s PharmacyRoulston’s Pharmacy is a fully independent four store pharmacy chain located in Norfolk County. Established in 1933, Roulston’s is owned and operated by four local pharmacists, all practicing within the company.
