The Ten Rules of Concert Etiquette

1. Refrain from talking. The first and greatest rule. It also includes whispering to or disciplining your other children.

2. Refrain from unwrapping noisy candy wrappers during the performance. If the composer wanted to include crinkle paper noises to the music, he/she would have written it into the parts.

3. Turn off pagers, cell phones and watch alarms. While many cell phones and pagers have symphonic-like rings, they don’t always fit into the musical score, nor do they provide pleasant sounds for your neighbors.

4. Do not wave to your children during the concert. After all, they do know who you are already, and they know you are there; you most likely brought them to the concert.

5. Do not take flash photography. You do not want your child to fall off the stage from blindness, do you?6. Do not walk down the center aisle with your video camera. Video cameras work just as well from the back

of the auditorium. (Besides; the light is usually not good enough for video taping anyway.)7. Do not leave as soon as your child’s portion of the concert is over. All of the students deserve a full audience

for their performances. Remember, next time your child’s song(s) could be last.8. Applaud at appropriate times. Some musical selections have several sections. Remember, it’s not over

until all of the sections of that selection have been performed.9. Do not leave the auditorium during the music. Wait for a break in the concert to visit the restroom,

unless you are carrying a screaming child, in which case you should leave quietly and quickly. PLEASE!10. Go to the concert expecting the best. You might just be surprised how good your student sounds when

the other students join in!

STUDENT ACTIVITIES . . . An Extension of the Curriculum

One focus of our athletic department is to stress the importance of student involvement in all activities offered by the Norfolk Public Schools. We want our kids to participate in band, vocal music, forensics, drama and other activities that complement our basic academic program.

There has been some feeling that too many students are specializing in one or two areas and excluding others. We are enlisting the support of parents and the community in our efforts to develop well-rounded stu-dents. Student development and long-term success can be traced to their involvement in extra-curricular activities.

Norfolk Public Schools,Prevention Pathways,Tobacco-Free Madison County Coalition

It is the intent of the Board of Education to create a smoke-free environment on all property of the Norfolk Public Schools. Our students and employees are our most valuable resources and in recognition of that, we promote the health, safety and well-being of each individual.

Since August 1996, nonsmoking has been the policy in all buildings and on all school grounds, as well as in all school vehicles. Employees and visitors are expected to honor the nonsmoking designations.

Violators will be asked to quit smoking and abide by this policy, or leave school property.Thank you for your cooperation!

No more ties in Nebraska high school football. The Nebraska School Activities Association has adopted the nationally recommended over-time procedure for tie-breaking during the 1980 football season. This is the 10-Yard Overtime Procedure. If a game ends in a tie, there will be a threee-minute rest period followed by a coin toss at the center of the field, and the visiting team will have the privilege of calling the coin. The winner of the toss has two choices: (1) go on offense or defense from the 10-yard line, or (2) designate the end of the field where the ball will be put into play. The basic rules of football are in effect. The first team on offense shall have a 4-down series from the 10. The idea is to score either by touchdown or by field goal and if a touchdown is scored, a team can attempt the extra points(s). any points scored are added to that recorded during the regular game. Next the team on defense gets the ball on the same 10-yard line for its own 4-down series. The team ahead after both teams have had an opportunity from the 10 will be declared the winner. If they are still tied, the procedure will be repeated until a team until a team outscores the other. (This sets up equal field conditions and will save some time, as opposed to going to the other end of the field for the second possession.

Norfolk Senior High School is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Plus rated AA by the Nebraska State Board of Education. The school system is proud of its academic standing and also its complete athletic program which includes interscholastic activities for both boys and girls.

Norfolk boys participate in the following sports: Football, Basketball, Track, Wrestling, Baseball, Tennis, Cross Country, Swimming, Soccer, and Golf. Girls participate in the following: Volleyball, Basketball, Track, Cross Country, Golf, Swimming, Soccer, Track, Softball and Tennis.

The Panthers compete in the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conferences which consists of Hastings, North Platte, Columbus, Kearney, Scottsbluff, Lexington and McCook.
