Local Area Information

Hampton Roads Profile

Norfolk ATCT is located in and controls the

airspace for Hampton Roads, the name for the

southeastern region of Virginia. Hampton Roads

is ranked the 31st largest Metropolitan Statistical

Area (MSA) in the United States. Recently

recognized by a University of Wisconsin study as

the nation’s most diverse region, the region is

home to 1.6 million people and includes the cities

of Chesapeake, Franklin, Hampton, Newport

News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Suffolk,

Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg; and the

counties of Gloucester, Isle of Wight, James City,

Mathews, Southampton, Surry and York; and

Currituck in North Carolina.

Hampton Roads is the birthplace of Colonial America. It

is home to Jamestown, the first permanent English

settlement, and to Colonial Williamsburg. Its rich

history, thriving maritime industry, and beautiful

waterfront landscapes merge with livable communities,

modern technology, economic prosperity, and a strong

military presence to create a unique and welcoming

place in which to live and do business.

Hampton Roads has it all:

from 29 miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches, to historic early

American culture; from visual and performing arts to world-class

museums celebrating soaring achievements in air and space,

maritime leadership, and the marine environment; from the many

rivers, inlets, and streams, to the Ocean, the Chesapeake Bay, and

the picturesque and serene Great Dismal Swamp, and all the varied

communities and places within and between.

Hampton Roads Attractions

Looking for something to do on the week-end?

From the Azalea Festival, to the tall ships of

Harborfest, to the Oceana Air Show and Neptune

Festival, excitement is always close by. Hungry?

The Pungo Strawberry Festival and Suffolk Peanut

Fest are a treat. Are you an angler? The Striped

Bass World Champions and Rockfish Shootout

should keep you hooked.

Do you like to take a more active role? Well Virginia Beach is

also home to the East Coast Surfing Championships, an annual

contest of more than 100 of the world's top professional

surfers and an estimated 400 amateur surfers. This is North

America's oldest surfing contest

Norfolk also serves as home to two professional

franchises, the Norfolk Tides of the International

League and the Norfolk Admirals of the American

Hockey League.

Is history your passion? Jamestown, Yorktown and

Colonial Williamsburg aren’t just places on a map;

they’re where our nation was born. The restored

areas are brought to life with tradesmen and

historical interpreters in full period costume. Re-

creations and exhibits tell the story from the

beginning of colonial unrest to the emergence of a

free nation.

And don’t forget about Nauticus. The

National Maritime Center, features hands-on

exhibits, interactive theaters, aquaria, digital

high-definition films and an extensive variety

of educational programs. It is also home to

the battleship USS Wisconsin, the last

battleship to be built in the United States.

If you take a delight in the

arts, look no further than

The Chrysler Museum of

Art. Located in the Ghent

district, it is the region's

foremost art museum and is

considered by the New York

Times to be the finest in the

state.

Or lend your patronage al fresco

If just plain fun is where your at, then Busch Gardens,

and the numerous water parks should fit the bill.

Action-packed, adventure parks with top-rated roller

coasters, rides, shows, a wide variety

of culinary experiences and shops

should keep you entertained and

leave you happily exhausted.

And to wrap it up, tickle your senses and soak up

the peace that the unique marine environment of

Hampton Roads has to offer. Habitats include

beach, dunes, woodland, farm fields, and marsh.

The majority of refuge marshlands are on islands

contained within the waters of Back Bay.

Approximately 10,000 snow geese and a large

variety of ducks visit Back Bay Refuge during the

peak of fall migration. The refuge also provides

habitat for a wide assortment of other wildlife,

including threatened and endangered species such

as loggerhead sea turtles, piping plovers,

peregrine falcons, bald eagles, and even wild

ponies.

One of the few remaining American wildernesses is the Great

Dismal Swamp. Many tales have been told about the Great

Dismal and its mysterious circular lake, a biological wonder few

have ever experienced. Several poets and history writers viewed

this place in different ways: both a paradise and a place of

foreboding unknown; rich and desolate; sweet smelling and

pungent; a place where a person may find peace, or if lost, may

never find the way out.
