Challenging start point
• Year 1965 built 17 floor ”Patient Tower” in the main hospital campus in Finland
• Strong moisture and wind load/stress fromsea - window seats are molded
• No cooling or decentheat recovery
• Poor air tightness

Challenges
• How to turn a concrete hospital ”bunker”,built in 1965, into a highly energy efficient pilot site
• 3 meter floor height to be used for all technical installations – 1,5 meter less than in a new building construction
• How to enhance IEQ at the same time
• Would have been cheaper to build new than renovate this building – conserved façade by building authority – new building is not an option

• Double façade made of glass – ”raincover” and air tightness - the consumption of space heating energy will be significantly reduced
IEQ and comfort:• The air flow rates will be more than doubled, but the
heat recovery system boosted with heat pumps will have a significant effect on the energy consumption
• Comfort floor heating in the bathrooms is a newelement – energy by solar panels
• Cooling is added – by ground energy
Devices and systems using electricity:• Improved lighting controls and efficient lamp types
• Energy efficient equipment such as pumps, fans, etc.
