Dance classes are designed for all levels of dancers. Basics class introduces basic dance practices while teaching body mechanics and skills helpful for all levels of dancers. Swedish and Norwegian classes feature traditional regional dances. Special additional classes may review dances taught in previous years or enrich the offerings. You don’t need to attend camp with a dance partner. We change partners frequently during classes and the dance parties. Evening parties include mixers, gammaldans (old-time dances), bygdedans (specific village dances), dances taught, and requests. Live music for all classes and dance parties! Music classes are offered at three levels for fiddle, hardingfele, and nyckelharpa. Levels 2 and 3 presume previous playing experience. Singing classes include singing for dance and traditional songs. Classes are generally taught "by ear" but a music syllabus may be pre-ordered to supplement the classes. A limited number of Hardanger fiddles and nyckelharpas are available for loan at camp. Make a note of your interest on your registration. Gammaldans Band is open to all instruments and voices. Housing There are two types of housing: (1) open “Adirondack” cabins (with roll-down tarps for rain and privacy), which house 2-3 people, with shared bathrooms nearby; and (2) “Premium” cabins with four walls and more convenient bath facilities. Premium rooms range from dorm style to lovely cottages with living rooms and separate bedrooms. Apply early for those options, as there are a limited number available and will be assigned to full-time campers first. All units have beds with mattresses (not cots) and electric lights. Ogontz also has a few rental houses at extra cost. Contact Ogontz directly and go to www.campogontz.com for information and pictures. Camp starts at 4 pm on Sunday, June 26, and ends with breakfast on Sunday, July 3. Part-time option: Campers may attend part of camp, preferably starting on June 26 if possible. New! Young adults (19-30 years old) may attend camp for a reduced rate. Children are welcome with an adult who is responsible for them. Children under 5 years old come for free. If there is sufficient interest, we may be able to offer a children’s program for an hour or two a day. Contact Byron [email protected] for more information and to connect

with other parents for playgroup and other options. PayPal: Please contact Theresa for information on this option at [email protected]. Payment deadline dates: Full payment must be received by May 15 for the discounted rate. Registrations received after May 15 will be charged the full rate. The $200 deposit required with registration is refundable until May 15, and the balance minus the deposit is refundable until June 15. Camp Ogontz is on 350 acres in the New Hampshire White Mountains, SW of Littleton off Route 10. It is on a lake surrounded by woods and sunny open spaces. The camp amenities include a large dining hall, swings, tennis and volleyball courts, lovely paths through the woods, swimming, canoeing, and, of course, dance halls, and rehearsal spaces. Food: Ogontz bakes its own bread and desserts, and offers tasty meals with vegetarian (not vegan) options. The kitchen cannot cater to special diets, but a list of ingredients is available at all meals. If you have special needs, you will need to come prepared. Refrigerators for camper use are stocked with items such as yogurt, carrots, celery, bread, cheese, peanut butter, hummus, tofu, and soy and rice milk. Scholarships: For more information, or to apply, please email Marilyn at [email protected] Bruce Sagan & Judy Barlas Scholarship is a $600 award given to campers based on need. Recipients may be currently active in the music and dance community or may be newly interested in Scandinavian music or dance. Young Dancer Scholarship helps young dancers (up to 35 years old) currently active or becoming interested in Scandinavian dance and who may need financial assistance to attend. Scholarships of $600 will be granted. Recipients may also apply for additional travel funds. Carolyn Pulis Memorial Scholarship is a $500 award given to musicians attending for the first time. Work Scholarships reduce the fee to $550 and involve about three hours of work daily, arranged to accommodate class schedules.

Knut Arne Jacobsen and Brit B. Totland are a dynamic team who are frequently sought-after for dance workshops across the U.S. Knut Arne is from Øystre Slidre, Valdres and studied Valdresspringar with tradition-bearers Knut and Berit Steinsrud, Harald Røine and Ingar Ranheim, among others. When living in Bø in Telemark, he studied with Agnes Buen Garnås. His singing teachers in the Valdres tradition include the Fuglesteg/Lie family, Ingvar Hegge, and Marit Karlberg. He will also share his joy of singing and storytelling. He has a particular interest in lullabies, and also has some songs for dancing. Brit teaches and works with Valdreslaget and children's dance groups in Oslo. Tommy and Ewa Englund are beloved and respected dance teachers, known for their clarity of presentation and personal warmth. They teach many popular dances, including those of their native Hälsingland and Gästrikland. Both have earned numerous awards including Big Silver for polska dancing in 1983, the Hälsingehambo contest 1983-86, the World Cup Swedish Schottis Championship, and the Swedish Folkdansringen Silver merit medal. Tommy is a judge for many dance contests including the Hälsingehambo. Ewa is a member of the Board for the Polska Medal Testing for dances from Jämtland, Härjedalen, and Medelpad and received the gold medal in 2012. Ewa and Tommy worked with the dance-researchers Göran and Inger Karlholm on an old village dance, Storhurveln and contributed the dance description in Old Dances from Jämtland and Härjedalen. Stefhan Ohlström, currently a resident of Ithaca, NY, is originally from Uppland, Sweden. An experienced dance fiddler, he has played for the Hörkens Bygededansare in Västmanland, Norrlandia Camp in Hälsingland, numerous other workshops, and most notably for Uppdansning competitions. In 1983 he was awarded rikspelman for music of Västmanland. We are very fortunate to welcome back this wonderful fiddler to play for the Swedish dance teachers this year. Sunniva Abelli is a nyckelharpa player, singer, and a composer of contemporary folk music with roots in Swedish traditional music. She also plays traditional music from Västerbotten. She graduated from the Nordic Master program in folk music in 2015, after two years of studies at academies in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway.

Sunniva is known for her dynamic and danceable playing. Her first cd, Framåt! was released in 2014. Caroline Eriksson is a fiddler and member of the group Tradpunkt with Sunniva Abelli. She has a degree from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm in folk music and is now taking the supplementary course in pedagogy. She works as a music teacher and a musician. Caroline has a broad repertoire, but specializes in the folk music of Södermanland, Dalarna, and Uppland. Loretta Kelley is a well-known performer on the Hardanger fiddle. In Norway, she is regarded with tremendous respect for her talent, skill, and devotion to their national instrument. She places well in fiddle contests, and accompanies top Norwegian dancers in competitions. She is much sought- after and respected at Scandinavian music and dance events across the US and is president of the Hardanger Fiddle Association of America. In addition to many public performances, she has released four recordings: Dansekveld, AmerikaSpel, Hambo in the Barn (1996) and Hambo in the Snow (2006), (with Andrea Hoag and Charlie Pilzer). She has made over 25 study trips to Norway in the last 20 years Roo Lester and Larry Harding are a knowledgeable and fun team who facilitate and welcome all to Scandinavian turning dances. Roo has studied and participated in dance and music events in Scandinavia since 1983. She received the Big Silver medal in Swedish polska dancing and continues testing additional dances. Larry is an accomplished athlete and dancer and has taught with Roo for many years. Their clear, positive teaching style blends background information, styling and technique to present the basics to dancers of all levels in a fun and lighthearted manner. Andrea Larson is delighted to be back at NFF this summer. She will teach the beginning fiddle class and Swedish fiddle technique and share work developed since her sabbatical at the Eric Sahlström Institute in Sweden in 2012-13. With a focus on exercises that link music to the dance (and back again!) she looks forward to making music with students of all ages and levels.

More to come!
