PRESIDENT’S REPORT by Jim Hahn

Our major joint fundraiser with LSCO, “Old Favourites” at the Yates is not being planned for this February. Our cast and crew would like to take a break for one year due to job commitments. The performers – Jeff Carlson, Jordana Kohn, Andre Royer, Erica Hunt, Scott Carpenter, Arlene Bedster and Kelly Roberts are our “favourites”. We started with a one time show and due to popular demand we had 4 good runs. It’s hard to believe that almost a year has past since our last AGM! This year five Board positions are open for election. I encourage you to consider letting your name stand for nomination; or encourage someone else you think would be an asset to our Board of Directors to stand for elec-tion. It is a great volunteer experience! Nomination forms are available at the Front Desk or talk to Harry Fischer. I have reviewed my succession plan and have decided to let my name stand for a third and final year as your President. It is also time for our annual Miners Memorial Raffle. I send spe-cial “Thanks!” to all the donors. Leister’s Home Care has given us the grand prize, a “Pride” lift chair with heat and massage. There are five more prizes to be awarded and you can see them on the poster within this News-letter! Tickets are available at Nord-Bridge Centre. Harry Fischer has volun-teered to manage the ticket sales for us. See him for a book(s) of tickets and let’s have a sellout this year! Thanks for your help and support of our Raffle(s)! In December, our Board passed a resolution to support the City of Lethbridge position to oppose a plan by the Province to centralize ambu-lance dispatch service. At the time of writing, we still have not received a response from Minister Horne’s office. Our consolidated system has been tried by many emergency crises in recent years with great success. We are told that our system is the envy of many cities not just in Alberta, but in North America! Our senior citizens are very dependent on an emergency system that works and are fearful of any changes at this time. To better understand how our consolidated emergency system works, we were pleased to have Mayor Chris Spearman and Fire Chief Brian Cornforth come to Nord-Bridge Centre on January 10. Thanks to the Mayor and Fire Chief for taking the time to visit with us and answer our questions. I want to congratulate Bob Tarleck who has just been appointed to the Seniors Advisory Council for Alberta. Bob will represent the South Region, one of six regions. Members of this Council report to the Minister of Health, Hon. Fred Horne, and the Associate Minister of Seniors, Dave Quest. Bob is a member of Nord-Bridge and understands senior’s issues. Good Luck, Bob; we look forward to working with you!

Remember – Keep Active and Stay Connected!

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Greetings Members; We had 45 new members join Nord-Bridge in January 2014. WOW … welcome to “The Friendly Centre”!!! Actually there were even a few more new members in January, but because of space, some names will appear in next month’s Newsletter. To our long-time members, please invite these new faces to join your table for coffee or lunch. You might also suggest some programs, services, and activities that will make them feel right at home. A friendly smile, helpful directions within the building, and a welcoming hand will also do lots to help our Centre continue to grow. I am pleased to report in 2013, membership totaled 1,322 individuals. This represented a net increase of 2.2% for the year. Our annual increase might even be viewed as more significant, except each year we loose members to health factors and moving into care facilities (percentage not available at time of preparing this report), and regrettably to death (4.8% in 2013). Our practice is to honour these individuals at the March 5, 2014 Annual General Membership Meeting. Other 2013 year-end statistics that might interest members include 48,649 sign-ins at the Front Desk. This number does not include those who used the South West rear entrance and did not proceed to sign-in at the Front Desk; and it does not include members and other visitors that used the Centre during evening hours. For your info, both the Multi-Purpose Hall and Community Room spaces are generally booked 5 – 6 evenings per week (many for Nord-Bridge programming), so our ac-tual Centre visitation is much higher. We also report that 79 Nord-Bridge members used the Go Friendly Shuttle service in 2013. Total person trips were 4,172 (rides), representing an increased volume of 7.9%. We thank City Council, Lethbridge Transit, and Access-A-Ride staff for supporting this program that keeps seniors engaged in the community, and facilitates safe travel and good health for seniors. In terms of our building, you will notice we are replacing the light fixtures salvaged from the prior structure when we purchased and ren-ovated our facility in 2000. New lighting is being installed in the Dun-ford Diner and Annex, and in some corridors. These new fixtures will double illumination, while also reducing our energy consumption by one third in the affected areas. Our new digital signage system is also saving trees. We hope you are happy that Nord-Bridge is environmen-tally conscious. On the building, we will also be making some parking lot and access improvements in the spring. More details on these pro-jects will be available at the March AGM. Finally, you will notice we are adding some color to this month’s Newsletter. I thank Kathy for spearheading this initiative. Thanks also to Shirley for her involvements. These enhancements will evolve over the next few issues. Respectfully yours,

Randy Smith

SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE BUFFET AT NORD-BRIDGE ON TUESDAY, MARCH 4 Shrove Tuesday, Apocreas, Fashnacht, Mardi Gras - what do these words mean? In plain English they mean “Pancake Day”. Shrove Tuesday is a day of celebration as well as penitence, because it’s the last day before lent. On this day, in many countries people indulge themselves on foods that traditionally weren’t allowed during Lent. Pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent. In March our regular “First Wednesday Breakfast Buffet” will be changed to Tuesday, March 4 in recognition of SHROVE TUESDAY. Available from 8:30 to 10:00 in the Dunford Diner.

NORD-BRIDGE MEMBER APPOINTED TO SACA

After a lengthy recruitment pro-cess, former Mayor and Nord-Bridge member Robert Tarleck has been ap-pointed by Order in Council to repre-sent the South Zone on the Seniors Advisory Council of Alberta (SACA), with a term to expire on December 17, 2016. We congratulate Bob on this important appointment. The Seniors Advisory Council of Alberta (SACA) is responsible for ad-vising the Province on matters relating to Alberta’s sen-iors. It is a government appointed body that reports through the Minister of Health, the Hon. Fred Horne. The Council gathers information on issues important to seniors by consulting with older Albertans and seniors’ organizations in communities across the province. The suggestions and feedback gathered are used to develop advice on legislation, policies, funding and coordination of programs and services for seniors. Their vision is “to increase the recognition of seniors as one of Alberta’s most respected and valuable resources”. Tarleck was nominated by Nord-Bridge, and we are confident that he will be an exemplary representative on the Council. He has proven to be a tireless volunteer and pubic servant over many years. He has also demonstrated a genuine commitment to senior citizens and has supported many organizations that provide pro-grams and services to seniors, including Nord-Bridge and LSCO. With his skills, knowledge and public expe-riences, he will provide meaningful contributions to the Seniors Advisory Council for Alberta, with objectivity and fairness.

Programmer’s Report by David Ng From the Desk of Val January was a busy month at the

Front Desk. We processed numerous mem-bership renewals and signed up 45 NEW members. That’s quite a lot and we extend a warm, friendly welcome to all of them. May-be sometime you’ll let us take your pictures for our “Rogue’s Gallery”. We are also missing a lot of renewing members so you too should drop by and we will take your picture. It helps us get to know you better. I warmly welcome Dianne Nemeth as a NEW Front Desk volunteer who works on Tuesday afternoons. Dianne brings us valued office skills, some of which she honed while working for the City of Lethbridge.

February can be a blue month because it is winter, and the days are still quite short. But that is no excuse to stay at home. You can phone the Centre and arrange for our Go Friendly Shuttle to pick you up and bring you to the Centre (so you can participate in your favourite activities) and then take you back home safely. Check out the travel board along with the NEW information monitors mounted throughout the Centre. There are some NEW exciting trav-el outings planned that may suit you if you have the urge to get out of town and see beyond the horizon.

We wish Pat Santa, our V.P. and Friday afternoon Front Desk volunteer, a speedy recovery from a seriously broken ankle sustained when she fell on ice. Please be careful everyone! Valerie Arkinstall

BOTTOMS! By Gloria Johnson Have you ever paid attention to bottoms? They come in dif-ferent sizes such as small, large and in between. Some are low, some are higher, some wiggle, some bounce, some even flop! Some are rather flat, others rather round. They are something we cannot be without or leave behind. They look different on a ‘him’ or a ‘her’, in tight pants, or in baggy, sloppy pants or even in shorts. This is not a topic we discuss in general con-versation. We look, we see, but quietly. So many things are held within. Sometimes that’s good, sometimes not so good. If you pay attention to bottoms as you walk down the street, just smile and without a word spoken, you will find it very interesting, perhaps amusing, and wonder what others see or think about your bottom. It still is not a topic to discuss with others, but to just watch and see in silence.

The Mind Joggers: Edward (Ted) Sillito, Jack Simmons, Judy Knox and Melvin Horn are conveners for “The Mind Joggers Writing Group”. The Mind Joggers recognize that each of us has memories that are im-portant to record for future generations. They are here to offer encour-agement and support as you get started writing. Drop-in to our Dunford Diner Annex any Thursday morning at 9:30 to see if this program is for you. You are most welcome to share stories and discussions with them.

David

Groundhog day is February 2nd. According to folklore, if the groundhog does not see its shadow then spring will come early. If the groundhog sees its shadow then winter will con-tinue for 6 more weeks. I really hope that shad-ow is nowhere to be seen on February 2nd! February will be filled with presentations and FREE neck and back massages starting with the Lethbridge College Mas-sage Therapy students on Monday, February 10th from 10 am - 12 pm in the Craft Room. On Wednesday, February 12th at 10:30 am in the Dunford Diner Annex, Dr. Aaron Bridge from Bridge Chiropractic will present “Positive Stress: How to maximize your exercise efforts for weight loss and healthy aging”. On Wednesday, February 26th , also in the Annex at 10:30, Servus Credit Union will talk about financial fraud and how seniors can protect themselves. Be sure to attend because Servus will have coffee and goodies for everyone plus a door prize for one lucky participant. On Friday, February 28th from 10:30 am - 12 pm in the South View Meeting Room, students from the Southern Al-berta Institute of Massage will be here to give FREE neck and back massages. The massages are on a first come first served basis, so be sure to make your way down the hall on the mas-sage dates. 2014 will be our 9th year of participating in Canada Reve-nue Agency’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Program. Nord-Bridge volunteers will once again help file your 2013 basic income tax return. The program starts on Monday, March 3rd. However, you can leave your name at the Front Desk now, and Sheila will contact you in late February to arrange a convenient appointment.

LOGO HISTORY The Nord-Bridge Seniors logo represents three people linked to-gether, after the fashion of the Leth-bridge Canadian Pacific High Level Bridge. Just as the crisscrossing of the support beams within the trestle adds strength to a bridge, seniors linked together in friendship, activity and unity receive strength from one anoth-er. The colours of the logo represent the diversity of individu-al members within Nord-Bridge. Nord-Bridge prides itself as being “the Friendly Centre”. We hope you remember this message each time you look at our logo.

CONDOLENCES The month of January was not a good month. We lost members Ruth Olsen, wife of Butch Olsen; Lou Burton; Richard Zuback; Velta Wish-newski; and Lillian Lastuka. Wally and Joyce Ellingson lost a son; Frank & Justine Sera lost

a daughter-in-law; and Edward Schnurr lost his wife. Several members suffered falls due to icy roads and pathways. PLEASE BE CAREFUL. Pat Santa, our VP broke her ankle due to icy conditions. Get well wishes to Andy Alm who is in hospital.

Thanks again to Lydia Prokop, our Nord-Bridge angel. Her visits to our sick and elderly do so much to lift their spirits. Her efforts on behalf of ill mem-bers are invaluable.

Wonderland” was attended by 106 guests, and 20 volunteers. As usual, everyone greatly en-joyed the musical entertainment of “Oscar & Yvonne”. We also enjoyed a few games of Card Bingo. Door prizes were won by Tyler of Dacapo, and Marion of Quest. Our February 10

th so-

cial “Hearts & Roses” will feature musical en-tertainment by the ever popular “Tom & Curt”. Please register early as seating is limited and this event will “sell out”.
