Happy August Nor-Cal Woodturners. Are you all ready for our Ice Cream Social this month? I know I am. As you know from last month’s meeting, we are doing a Spinning Top Turn-Off competition. Mr. Tony and I have got all the supplies ready to go. If you would like to use your own tools you are more than welcome to bring them with you. I don’t really know when the last time Nor-Cal has had a friendly competition. Mr. Tony or I will give a simple demonstration on how we turn the tops. My plan is to have two or three stations set up to turn your top. Once you’re finished with your top, there will be a place to test it. My hope is to get 20 or 30 tops going at the same time. So let’s have a good time, eat some ice cream and turn some tops. This is a family event, so please remember to bring your families.
Mr. Shann Galuza found an interesting article on alternative methods of drying green bowl blanks from Woodworker’s Journal. I have had the opportunity to read this article and found it extremely helpful. I’ve tried waxing my bowl blanks and somehow they still cracked due to the conditions in my garage. I am definitely going to be trying this new technique. I have attached a link so you can view the article. Thanks Mr. Shann for doing the research. http://www.woodworkersjournal.com/options-for-drying-green-bowl-blanks/

Next month at our September‘s meeting our demonstrator will be Mr. Ted Young. I believe he’s demonstrating his new boxes that he’s been working really hard on. They have a magnetically attached swivel lid. This should be a really good demonstration. He’s been working on these for a little while and I think they are going to start making these boxes as a class project in the school classroom as well. I’m really looking forward to his demonstration. I want to see how he gets the lid to work.
Lastly, our Fourth Annual Tool Swap will be happening in October. My wife and I will be bringing chili and cornbread, so make sure you bring an appetite. Let’s all gather up our used tools that we are no longer using and try and make some money to go and buy more tools. I look forward to this event every year. Mr. Tony seems to have anything a woodturner might need. It’s fun just to sit back and watch him wheel and deal.
Hope to see you all at our Ice Cream Social. Thanks for allowing me to be your president of Nor-cal Woodturners.
I hope to see you all at our meeting. Jimmy Corbin

Share Your Knowledge
One of the great things about Nor-Cal is the wealth of knowledge our members have. Another is that everyone is willing to share that knowledge. If you have a "specialty" or even just a turning project that has "turned out" well, please consider sharing that by demonstrating at one of our club meetings. It can be a ½ hour demo (and we'll combine it with someone else) or a one hour demo. For those who haven't demonstrated before, we have added a page to our website titled "How To for Demonstrators”. It's under the Members Only section at the bottom. Please consider helping the club by sharing your knowledge. Just let Tony or Jimmy know and they will get you on the schedule.

Go/No-Go for Chucks
In the February 2010 AW, Lee Sky presented a tip for easy tenon measuring, which I thought was great. I tried this method for the standard jaws on my Oneway Stronghold. Laying a pencil flat on the tailstock gave me a good mark for smallest diameter, but not for largest diameter of a tenon.
I cut a piece of wood ½" × 9" (13 mm × 23 cm), and glued a pencil to the side. When this piece is placed on the tailstock, it gives the correct diameter for the largest tenon. I can now scribe two quick "go/no-go" marks where I need to turn a tenon.
I also use the #4 jaws, which require slightly different-size go/no-go marks. For scribing these marks, I glued a piece of wood, ⅝" (16 mm) wide on one side of a pencil and 11⁄16" (27 mm) on the other. All I need to do is cut a recess just a little larger than the big circle and the size is perfect for expansion chucking in the bottom of a plate.
I made the pieces of wood long enough so that as the pencil wears down, the jig will still rest horizontal on the tailstock. When the pencil becomes too short I will just glue in a new one.
I also glued a magnet on the side of the jigs so I can put them on the headstock or at the end of the ways, depending on what I am making. With the jigs attached magnetically to the lathe, they don’t fall into the shavings. — Dan Burleson, Troy, MO
