Brief Introduction
Well since the technologies of personal computer devices move on, more and more advanced
hardware devices come to the public; but the operating system and software going fatter and
fatter. Besides the operating system, the software takes more and more hard disk space to
store and, requires huge amount of computer hardware resource for work. It looks like that a
fat guy who need pay more energy to walk/run steadily; similar to software in current days, the
software requires more hardware resources to work properly.
Hardware and software is just two elements which combine d to build computer devices. We
are not able to know how often users update their computer hardware, although there isMoores Law state us the upgrade period of hardware. But we can know the software upgrade
period through information within Internet and, measure software taking how much hardware
resource for working properly.
Recently, we are analyzing the process of booting up Windows operating system. Within the
analysis, we find out there some processes can drive computer bootup speed slow. The reasons
can be concluded in three aspects: Hardware, Operating System, and the Software installed on
computer.
Since we are only software provider, here we could not do any support on hardware but some
effective suggestions. As software provider, we run an analysis on software which would drive
computer bootup slow and; here we have the primary research result on which kind of
software drive a slow bootup.
Within this report, we shall introduce you how about the hardware perform and, how about
the software perform, during the process of booting up computer, in a simple way.

Part I. About the test
1. About the Test
While analyzing what slow down computer bootup speed, we find out security software
significantly slows down Windows computer bootup speed and, make users pay more time to
enter Windows.
During the bootup process, besides processes/services from Windows Operating System, auto-
startup program would slow down bootup speed; meanwhile, the most significant element
which slows down computer bootup speed is process/service from security software.
We detected that there is some process/service from security software would drive a higher I/O
speed on data transfer and, a higher CPU usage rate. So we wonder, how about security
software perform during the bootup process and, if the software really makes users pay moretime to enter Windows.
This is why this research report comes out.
2. About the Test Machine
We want to see how about the performance of bootup on a common computer device which
has normal hardware and common used software installed. So we select a laptop device to run
this test and, present a non-strict analysis report to readers who have interesting on this topic.

As we have run Windows Performance Analyzer utility (Link Here) on the test machine and, find
out that the bootup time is always in fluctuation in every boot. The fluctuation may be caused
by changes of software which installed on the device. So, we take the test machine reboot for 5
times and set the average time as its normal bootup time.
Below is the average bootup time of test machine:
Sheet 1: Average bootup time of test machine
During the test, we do not take any optimization operation to the test machine and, keep all
auto-start processes/services stay, to make sure the working status of test machine close to a
normal device which is used by normal computer user. (Because that we find out most users
would like to run Skype or Windows Live Messenger and other daily used software
automatically with Windows.)

Product:
AVG Internet Security 2012
Home User Solution v 2012.0.2127
With the latest update on date of running this test.
About AVG:
AVG was founded in 1991 with the express purpose of protecting people around the world
using the latest in cutting edge security technologies. AVG gained success quickly and is now
recognized as one of the biggest players in the security software market.
Here we will not state anything about how to install or uninstall the AVG Internet Security
software, but only show you the bootup time before & after install the software. Please check
the statistic sheet below.
Sheet 2: Average bootup time after install AVG Internet Security 2012
Within the statistics table above, we can easily find out that bootup time is about 22 seconds
longer than time before install the software. And the two most significant item items are
hardware time and system time. The test machine run smoothly on hardware and system, but
after installed AVG Internet Security 2012, bootup time of the two options has been lengthened.
Please check the comparison chart below which show you the bootup time before and after

from Windows Performance Analyzer:
Sheet 5: Hard Disk I/O status of Windows computer during bootup process (AVG)
Well since the bootup of Windows computer, the security software may start from the early
beginning and, run across the whole process. As we have tested, there are 9 processes startup
with Windows.
As each process work in different function and priority level, the time of start will be different.
Meanwhile, each process has different requirement to hardware resources. Just like the sheet 5
shows.
In additional, normally, security software has a function called Real Time Monitor/Scan. We
have monitored such process may sustain from the early beginning of Windows bootup to the
end of bootup accomplished. Such process may ask more hardware resource and read huge

Bootup Time Test Run with avast! Free Antivirus
First, please let us show you the average bootup time after install avast! Free Antivirus on the
test machine:
Sheet 6: Average bootup time after install avast! Free Antivirus 2012
We can easily find out that the bootup time is really slow with almost 30 seconds longer than
time without avast! Free Antivirus. Meanwhile, we must notice that the most reason is about
the software time, since the hardware time and system time has a narrow fluctuation. The
software time has been prolonged significantly by avast!.
To get a clear image of bootup time before & after install avast! Free Antivirus; please check the

Sheet8: Hard Disk I/O status of Windows computer during bootup process (avast!)
Within our monitor, there are three processes from avast! Free Antivirus run in Windows
bootup process. The most significant impression is high I/O usage rate from the chart above.
Here, we find out high I/O usage rates can really affect the bootup performance
of Windows computer. This issue is concerned with the hard disk performance
and security software, since we only run this non-strict test on a normal hard
disk.
Well,
Although we have known that the security software would drive a
high I/O usage rate during the boot up process of Windows
computer and, high CPU usage rate. But here we still want to ask:
Does security software really slow down Windows bootup speed?
The question is also what we want to know. For better optimization
task, we decide to test another four famous security software on
the test machine, to see if the security software really slow down
bootup of Windows computer.
Please follow the report and check bootup performance of test
machine with security software installed.

Because of processes from Avira Internet Security, we can see, the computer bootup prolonged

of Avira and, the computer identifies the bootup process is not accomplished. So, users should
spend more time for entering the OS.

From sheet 11, we can find out the bootup process is accomplished around 45s, but there is a
line shows high disk I/O usage. Checking time from 50s to 60s in the time line, we can easily find
out the process from Avira Internet Security takes huge computer hardware resource. If a user
wants to run some software, he/she must wait a longer time to launch such software.
Why? This is only because hardware resource distribution between the security software and
such software. Meanwhile, the user may feel computer run in slow. This is really a bad
experience.
Well, someone may still do not trust what we have presented here. So, please pay some time and patient to read following test we did.

making updates.
Firest, please let us check the average bootup time of Windows Computer after installed
Microsoft Security Essentials:

The sheet 12 of average bootup time show us a steady hardware time and system time. (Please
notice that the first reboot will not be foreclosed into our statistics.) But the table shows us a
longer time on launching software.
Why? The reason we find out is a protection service from Microsoft Security Essentials which is
called Microsoft AntiMalware Service. This service is not concerned with software, but the
Windows System. So, while you boot up Windows, this service will enable with the system,
read/write files to hard disk.

Sheet 19: Bootup time comparison chart VI
Sheet 20: Hard Disk I/O status of Windows computer during bootup process (Kaspersky)
It looks that Kaspersky run smoother than other software. Maybe the vendor has noticed that
the software requires more hardware resource and will slow down the bootup speed and, some
optimization work has been done. But, more terrible, the software still slows down the bootup
speed and makes users pay more time to enter Windows.
