Museum, artist Tracy Ference is offering a limited time special offer on

pencil portraits!

During the month of July, Tracy will be offering portraits of your choice

for $250 and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Museum. She

will work from a photograph taken by studio artist Chad Thompson and will

work up to a size 11”x14”.

Quilt National: The Dairy Barn Arts Center Biennial. March 8 - June 30, United-Legard Galleries. For more than three decades, the biennial Quilt National exhibit at the Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, Ohio, has showcased the best and most exciting contemporary art quilts being created around the world. The mission remains the same for this 17th biennial installment: to se-lect works that honor the quilting tradition while embracing new forms of expression through innovative uses of new techniques and materials.

The Virginia Dulcimer: 200 Years of Bowing, Strumming & Picking. January 18 - August 11, Price-Strongwell Galleries. The dulcimer is one of the most popular symbols of mountain music. This exhibition explores the dulcimer’s long journey from northern Europe to the mountains of Appalachia. Over sixty original dulcimers are on display in the galleries alongside descriptive information and historic photographs.

UnShelved: Nick DeFord, Daniel Essig, Travis Head, and Robyn Raines. June 7 - September 29, United Company Contemporary Regional Gallery. From all corners of the region, the artists selected for this exhibition together reveal an interest in text-based images, seeing books as art objects, and working with paper in both traditional and alternative ways. In many ways these artists are also astute collectors of images, publications, stories, and things - which also serve to inform their work.

European Modern: Master Artists from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. August 23 - December 29, 2013, United-Legard Galleries. Opening Reception, September 5 from 6-8 p.m. Hand-selected works from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts will travel to Abingdon for this extraordinary exhibition. Become acquainted with works by the famous French Impressionists such as Degas, Cezanne, Toulouse Lautrec, Van Gogh, and many other memorable names from art history.

Great and Small: Nineteenth Century Diminutive Objects from the Region. August 30 - January 12, 2014, Price-Strongwell Galleries. Opening Reception, September 5 from 6-8pm. The tradition of making diminutive furniture, or min-iature furniture, has origins in Europe and was brought to this region through our early American ancestors. This exhibition will bring together a sampling of nineteenth-century diminutive furniture from Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee.

Through the Looking Glass (July 8 – 12) Rising 1st – 6th grade

Follow the yellow brick road down the rabbit hole, and straight on ‘til morning! In this adventure-filled week, campers go on a fantastical journey through Oz, Neverland, Willy Wonka’s famous factory, and Wonderland, creating scenery, puppets, and other art that makes these extraordinary places come to life.

Elementary, My Dear Watson! (July 15 – 19) Rising 1st – 6th grade

Perfect for young sleuths, this week is all about mystery, intrigue, and suspense. Our young detectives will become expert sketch artists, crime scene investigators, and gadget-wielding spies as they work to solve a case. Grab your magnifying glass and take a closer look as we venture into the puzzling worlds of From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, The Westing Game, Sherlock Holmes, and more!

Mixed Media Sculpture Workshop with Robyn Raines

Participants in this workshop are asked to bring 10 objects that can fit into a backpack. Using those objects plus a variety of provided “treasures,” students will enjoy a day of creating sculpture! Concepts such as connections, texture, focal points, stability, longevity, and other elements involved in developing mixed media sculpture will be explored. Students will walk away with new brainstorming techniques as well as the information and skills needed to create sculpture using a variety of materials.

Panoramic Gallery 2014

October 18, 2013 – February 16, 2014 United Company Regional Art Gallery

William King Museum celebrates the diversity of artistic talent in the Southern Appalachian Highlands. From These Hills is a biennial exhibition series begun just one year after the Arts Center opened in the spring of 1992. This biennial exhibition invites artists in all stages of their careers working in Southwest Virginia, Northeast Tennessee, Western North Carolina and parts of Kentucky and West Virginia to submit their work for consideration.

Guest Curator Steven Matijcio is the curator of contemporary art at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SEC-CA) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto and received an MA from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, New York. Matijcio has held positions in a number of important galleries and mu-seums including the Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art, the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the National Gallery of Canada. Matijcio was awarded a prestigious Emily Hall Tremaine Exhibition Award in 2010, and was chosen from an international field of candidates to take part in curatorial residencies in Gwangju, South Korea and Berlin, Germany.

Art Ball 2013

Part of the William King Museum’s mission is to exhibit work by local and regional artists. We invite all art-ists to submit a portfolio of recent work for solo and group exhibitions to be held monthly. Also encouraged are self-curated group exhibitions based on a theme or concept. We are considering projects in all media. Opening receptions will be every first Thursday each month, with some exceptions. The first Monday of the month will be reserved for installation and de-installation while the Museum is closed. Please take this into consideration when submitting your portfolio.

All submissions should include a cover letter, a brief artist bio and statement, up to twenty digital slides on a CD at 300dpi and suitable for printing, slide identification sheet with title, year, medium and dimension for each work and a self-addressed stamped envelope if you want your materials returned. Submissions should be mailed to William King Museum, P.O. Box 2256, Abingdon, VA 24212 or dropped off to the Museum for Leila Cartier.

Panoramic Gallery submissions are due by September 2, 2013
