For more than 100 years members have relied on this not-for-profit organization for everything from

life insurance and annuities to mutual funds and disability insurance. Today, these services, plus

assistance in money management, brokerage, and retirement planning, are enriching the lives of its 2.3 million

members nationwide.

They pride themselves on giving their members targeted, high-quality products and services to help them

at different stages of life. To continually refine and expand its offerings, and bring them to market faster, the

organization embraces new technologies. Their 300-strong development team plays a central role in this effort,

devising concepts for products and services, testing them, and releasing them to market.

An agile development strategy for a growing portfolioHistorically, it took up to six months for developers from IT and business teams to launch new products or

services, or even modify the smallest of applications, because of the complexity of obtaining the right data

set for user acceptance testing, and a two- to three-week wait for the data. Given increasing demand among

members for a more dynamic, customized portfolio of services, senior leadership saw an opportunity to

implement an organization-wide agile development process to bring products and services to market faster.

“We needed to move more quickly and expedite the development of features, products, and services that

better meet our members’ expectations,” says the IT Manager of the Nonprofit Financial Services Organization.

“As a first step, we looked at the provision of data for testing, specifically in areas such as availability, quality,

and security. The speed at which we harness data for testing determines the speed at which we get a product

to market.”

The organization considered several options to help meet these objectives and chose Informatica over

alternative solutions because of the company’s collaborative approach to the project. “Informatica is a

strategic partner, walking side by side with us along our journey,” says the IT Manager. “The team is responsive

and highly engaged in our work, allowing any issues to be quickly and effectively resolved.”

Business Requirements:

• Instill trust from members by delivering timely and relevant product and service offerings

• Create a dynamic, tailored portfolio of products and services that reflect changing member needs

• Achieve a continuous evolution of products and services through agile development

It previously took two to three weeks

for developers to obtain test data. With

Informatica Test Data Management they

can now access that data instantly. As

a result, they now work in a two- to four-

week, rather than a four- to six-month,

development cycle and we’re bringing

solutions to market faster.”

Automated data provisioning leads to accelerated testingAn existing Informatica PowerCenter user, they deployed Informatica Test Data Management (TDM) to

automate the data provisioning process and accelerate the testing process. The solution pulls customer and

related product data into a test data generator at regular intervals, creating a golden record, and stores it in a

test data warehouse. Because the data includes confidential membership information, it is masked as read-

only to help ensure security and privacy.

“Security and privacy are paramount, and our success is built on a hundred years of trust from our members,”

they explained. “Protecting personal data is our top priority, and we do that through data masking and

continuous monitoring facilitated by the Informatica PowerCenter Data Validation Option.”

The Data Validation Option allows them to test data management team to monitor the production

test environment for the presence of any unmasked data and take instant, corrective action if necessary, to

protect data.

Cutting product testing time in halfAdditionally, Informatica Test Data Generation allows developers to pull data on-demand, rather than wait

for two or three weeks as they did previously. Faster access to test data, together with the integrity of the

golden data, helps reduce overall product testing time by 50%, in alignment with the organization’s agile

development goal.

“It previously took two to three weeks for developers to obtain test data. With Informatica Test Data

Management they can now access that data instantly,” notes the IT Manager. “This means our developers

spend less time preparing test data sets and provisioning, and more time testing. As a result, they now work

in a two- to four-week, rather than a four- to six-month, development cycle and we’re bringing solutions to

market faster.”

Meanwhile, more member information is used in the development process thanks to the highly secure, data

masking capability. The result is new features, products, and services that are better tailored to the needs

and demands of their members.
