I will be loyal to the United Methodist Church by my prayers,
my presence, my gifts, my service and my witness.
From The Pastor’s Desk John 20:1 Early on the first day of the week , while it was
still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the
stone had been removed from the entrance. NIV
Mary Magdelene began her journey to the tomb in darkness.
How symbolic! When Jesus found Mary, her soul was
enveloped in darkness. Her life was stained by sin. How could
she ever escape the dilemma she was in? When she met Jesus,
He forgave her and freed her from the power of sin in her life.
From that moment on she became a loyal disciple. She
followed Jesus, saw the miracles, heard His message, and
believed. When the disciples fled after Jesus’ arrested, she
stayed loyal. When Jesus died on the cross, she found herself
enveloped in the darkness of grief, sorrow, and hopelessness
again. In spite of overwhelming sorrow she went to the tomb
that Sunday morning. With her head bowed in sorrow and her
cheeks stained with tears she makes her way in the darkness.
When she arrived the stone was rolled away and the tomb was
empty. Where is the body of Jesus? Two angels had the
answer. Luke 24:3-6 3 but when they entered, they did not find
the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were perplexed about
this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling
clothing; 5 and as the women were terrified and bowed their
faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the
living One among the dead? 6 "He is not here, but He has risen.
Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee.
(NASV) Hope filled Mary’s heart as she rushed to tell the
disciples what she had seen and heard. Mary’s journey through
the darkness that Sunday morning resulted in light, love and
salvation. Mary’s journey to the resurrected Christ is similar to
all of us who have made that faith journey. When we give our
hearts to Jesus, we come to Him enveloped in darkness. Have
you made that journey from darkness to light?
Grace and Peace, Reverend Jeff Lambert
