Teachers have reported that outstanding work was achieved by our pupils during the half-term break, a real commitment was shown to the Home School Study Packs and this should stand our KS1,2 & 3 pupils in good stead for today’s second bi- weekly tests. We are working hard to enable you to access your children’s bi-weekly test results from the school website and we will be able to bring you news very soon of the launch of this new service. Even though it is evident that school work was being completed during the break, it was good to see over 200 pupils and parents at the Palms cinema during the holiday. The children clearly enjoyed the film and meeting up with their friends and my thanks to the PTA who continue to innovate in their fund raising efforts. As I am sure you will know by now, the Children’s Reading Garden is the focus of our 2014/15 Parent Appeal and we hope to welcome you to our Tea & Tour event next Thursday 13 th at 8.00am in the School Foyer. Together with the PTA we plan to explain the detailed plans for the Reading Garden and communicate the many different ways you can get involved in the project. Enjoy your week-end! ‘Non Sibi Sed Omnibus’

Friday 7th November 2014

Hello, one of the questions I am often asked by parents is what they can do to help their children maintain some momentum with their studies during the holidays. While my detailed answers may differ for individual children, invariably my response will begin with Reading! Encouraging a life-long love of reading is one of the most valuable gifts we can give our children. Reading is at the heart of literacy and the words children encounter in their books contribute to extending the vocabulary that can be used in independent written work. As children progress through the Primary years a good knowledge of the British literary tradition will be essential in helping them to perform well in entrance exams to UK Independent Schools, if this is the route your are considering. In fact, feedback from the UK Independent School Admissions process indicates that it is in the area of Comprehension tests that many non-British children do not do themselves justice. Cultural references and some of the idiomatic language are missed, knowledge which wider reading will help to build. I have

LPS Mid-Term Movie Bash More than 200 of you came to our Mid-Term Movie Bash to enjoy ourselves and to help raise funds for the Children’s Reading Garden. Thank you! It was lovely to meet up during the break and go to the movies together. I think we may have just started a new LPS mid-term tradition. Well done to our PTA for coming up with an innovative way for us to socialise and fund raise for the school at the same time. Two movie theatre screens will be required next time, to avoid any disappointment, tickets sold out very quickly. Thank you PTA!

Focus on LPS Hot Lunch More than 240 of our children now enjoy a daily hot lunch from our LPS school restaurant and we would like to take a moment to thank our caterer, Mrs Bisoye Akinola, a parent of the school and the many parents who have supported the service. We are rightfully proud of the top class service we have been able to bring to our pupils and we know we are the envy of Independent Schools throughout Lagos. “At my first ever meeting with parents the request for a quality hot lunch service was uppermost in mothers’ minds”, commented the Headmaster as he tucked into lunch with pupils this week.
