Relevant Education, Career and Volunteer Experience:Since 1971, I have been a Skate Canada member firstly as a skater and today as a coach. As a former test and senior level competitive, I have had the unique opportunity to train, test and compete in both a small and large training centre being the Gloucester Skating Club in Ottawa and a very remote skating club located in Lahr, Germany. My accomplishments include being a quadruple gold medallist in figures, free skate, dance and senior competitive singles. After my competitive skating career, I toured with “Ice Follies” and “Disney on Ice” for four years, performing all over the world. I was able to enjoy this unique opportunity to perform and experience different skating venues, cultures, and audiences. It was an enriching experience as I was able to travel the world, meet new people and above all do something that I love and passionate about.

In 1988, I joined the Gloucester Skating Club in Ottawa as the Director of Skating, the club that was so supportive to me during my amateur career it has given me an opportunity to give to the club that I am grateful for during my skating career.

During my 31 years of coaching, I have attained Level 5 Certification in the NCCP- National Coaching Certification Program. I have assisted coaches to further their development by being a Level 3 Mentor Coach. This gives me the opportunity to assist new coaches in achieving their coaching aspirations and “pay forward” my knowledge, experience and passion to our next generation of coaches. I feel this is an invaluable experience for both the up and coming coaches and I, as there is always more to learn.

I have been fortunate to experience and be a part of many of the Skate Canada Committees and National Coaching Apprenticeship Programs (Worlds 2013) over the years as a coach. I was part of the first LTAD Committee for the Skate Canada Long Term Athlete Development Plan and now I will once again be a part of the committee for the Skate Canada “refresh” of the LTAD model.

As the Director of Skating, at the Gloucester Skating Club, my responsibilities include negotiating ice allocations with the City of Ottawa, dispersion of ice to all programs: CanSkate, SynchroSkate, STARSkate and CompetitiveSkate, developing seminars, enhancement programs, applying for skater development grants, fundraising, creating and developing polices, funding, budgeting, scheduling, delivery of Skate Canada Program standards, as well as the hiring of highly qualified professional coaches. I regularly attend all board meetings and represent the club at city, section, provincial and national events when requested.

I coach and live in Ottawa, Ontario. I have been awarded the EOS Coach of the Year. I have been fortunate to have skaters who have competed and medalled at the club, local, section, national and Junior Grand Prix international events. NICOLE LEBLANC-RICHARDRunning for the Position of: Director Atlantic (Acclaimed)Present Office Held: Director AtlanticResidence: Dieppe, New Brunswick

Relevant Education, Career and Volunteer Experience:Education and Career ExperienceWith a BSc in Chemistry and Masters in Environmental Sciences, I’ve been employed with the National Research Council’s Industrial Research Assistance Program since 2001, first as an Industrial Technology Advisor (ITA) and currently as Director for the Atlantic Region. Over the past 18+ years, I’ve been privileged to work with SMEs, providing technical advice, competitive intelligence, and linkages to guide their technological innovation projects. As a Director, I now play a leadership and collaborative role in managing a team of 32 ITAs. I also have responsibility in managing the Region’s budget, including the Program’s financial contributions to support SMEs’ R&D activities.

My desire to collaborate with others has fuelled my involvement as a member of several committees, including NRC-IRAP’s Sustainable Development Sector Group, and IRAP’s Lean Special Interest Group which promotes Lean design/manufacturing practices to improve productivity/efficiency within SMEs, and where I assisted in drafting the Lean SIG’s Vision/Terms of Reference and workplan. More recently, I sit on the national SPD (State of Professional Development) Committee, reviewing all employee promotion cases within NRC-IRAP.

Finally, with NRC-IRAP, I work fluently in both official languages. The invaluable experience gained as an ITA and now as Director have allowed me to appreciate the diversity of expertise and innovation within the Region’s many industry sectors, and enabled me to gain experience in budget management and human resource management, including participating on interview boards, and in strategic planning initiatives.

Volunteer ExperienceAs a former skater, official, and skating parent, I’ve been a club, region, Section and National volunteer for 30+ years. With this sport so dear to my heart, I enjoy contributing to the training/development of officials, working with skaters/coaches through monitoring sessions, and am passionate about working with volunteers at all levels.

My professional career and board/committee involvement with NRC-IRAP have provided a skill-set that has benefited my club, Section and National board and committee involvement. At the club and Section level, understanding governance helped guide my involvement in revising the club and NB Section constitutions, and my contribution during three NB Section strategic planning sessions. My human resources experience became especially valuable when developing interview questionnaires for hiring two Section Executive Directors, as well as the current Technical Director.

15

My skating background has also been valuable. With a lack of officials in remote areas, I helped implement a testing structure allowing all NB skaters equal opportunity to test within each season. I’ve also contributed to redesigning the Section’s competitions structure, providing STAR and Competitive athletes opportunities to compete based on LTAD guidelines. With my club, I volunteered at all levels, including being Canskate Chairperson during implementation of the new CanSkate. Nationally, I am a current Skate Canada Board member, and am the Chairperson of the Officials Assignment and Promotions Committee.

Finally, outside of skating, I believe that organizations cannot survive without volunteers. Throughout their youth, I volunteered wherever my children, Simon, Chloé and Rémi were involved (ex. fundraising, tournaments, etc.), including the local Canadian National Institute for the Blind.

Experience Relevant to the Skate Canada Board of Directors:I have always had a passion for skating, an interest in science and a desire to collaborate with others in the development of new initiatives, so I am very fortunate that my career path has allowed me to pursue and combine all of my passions and interests.

As an official, Chair of the Officials Assignment and Promotions Committee, a former Skate Canada New Brunswick Board member, and former Dieppe Gold Blades Skating Club Board member, I feel that I have a solid understanding of Skate Canada’s business and bring a range of perspectives, from club constitutions to Section strategic planning and policy development, from grass-roots to high performance officials and athlete development. As the current Atlantic representative on the Skate Canada Board, I am proud to represent the views and perspectives of Atlantic members.

Areas of Interest Within Skate Canada:I am very privileged to work with volunteers, committees and clubs that share my passion for skating. My enthusiasm and commitment to skating continue to grow and, as such, I would be honoured to continue as a Skate Canada Board member.

Over recent years, I have gained greater understanding of challenges and opportunities facing the organization. With club, committee and board experiences, I feel that I have the necessary skills to assist Skate Canada in setting direction, strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation. I also bring a positive and constructive approach to problem solving, including leadership and communication skills in both official languages. Finally, with my technical background, I am interested in all aspects of athlete development, from to the high performance stage. I believe athletes can only develop through the part-nership/teamwork of a support structure that includes coaches and officials, clubs and volunteers, and the foundation of strong Sections and National organization. My interests therefore lie in ensuring that athletes from across the country, remote and central, benefit from such a support structure. My strength in understanding the needs of the organization, coupled with the financial, governance and strategic planning aspect of managing a large organization would make me a strong candidate to help the continued growth of the sport and provide it a solid footing for the future.

In the skating world, I was part of many committees. Some of the most important are:• Quebec Section team manager for the 2013 and 2014 Skate Canada Challenge• Quebec Section team manager for the 2013 and 2014 Skate Canada Canadians• Skate Canada LOC, 2011 Grand Prix Final in Quebec City, responsible for transportation• Skate Canada LOC, 2013 ISU WORLDS in London, responsible for airport transportation, including VIP driver.• Skate Canada LOC, for many Challenge events, including Pierrefond, Quebec• Skate Canada OC for French version streaming, Synchro Canadians• Skate Canada OC Grand Prix Final 2019, VIP Transportation Coordinator• Skate Canada OC Skate Canada International 2018, VIP Transport Coordinator

Experience Relevant to the Skate Canada Board of Directors:I am a former skater and skated from 1973 until 1989. My highest level of competition was at the 1988 Nationals in Victoria B.C. Following those wonderful years as a skater, I became involved in the coaching and professional dance partner world.

Like many volunteers, I returned to the skating world in the first year when my daughter started skating. This was in 2006 where the local club was in need a volunteer for the year-end Gala. In the same year at the AGM, I was elected club President.

I stayed with the club for 3 years. During that time one of the major projects was to move from manual accounting to accounting software. This was a major change for the club and served to easily track project finance. With help from the city, the club was able to gain access to a permanent office at the rink.

I was on the board of directors of my region from 2008 to 2014. On the region board, I was faced with old ways of doing things and we needed to act on the new ways of skating. It was at the beginning of the CanSkate pilot project where the section was pushing regions to adapt the development program, to produce better program, to keep skaters within the discipline, and to track potential elite. With the complicity of the board, we built a long-term strategy making the region a leader within the section.

After a year on the region board, I was elected as the Administrative Vice-President; I occupied that role for one year. During that time, we continued to build support of athletes and a better development program. Afterwards, I was elected President of the Regional Board. I was President for two terms (4 years). During the last 3 years as Regional President, I was elected as the representative of all Quebec Section Regional Presidents. The representative sits on the board of the Quebec Section.

PATRICK ROCH (continued)

23

Also, as the representative of Regional Presidents, I was a member of the Club and School Committee, which validates charters and reviews new club requests. During that time, the Quebec Section hosted a coordination table for all Regional Presidents. The representative acts as the President of that table.

In 2014, I formally presented myself for the Administrative Vice-President role on the Patinage Québec board and was subsequently elected. I still occupy this position.

At Patinage Québec, I have been working on many committees: awards, communication, marketing, human resources, web site and governance.

Since 2015, I have been a member of many Skate Canada committees such as the Section Chairs Committee (2015 - 2018, chaired the committee from 2017 to 2018), the Membership Committee (2016 - 2019), the Synchro Operating Committee (2018 - 2019), the Finance and Enterprise Risk Management Committee (2018 - 2019), the Strategic Plan Development Committee (2017 - 2019) and the Worlds 2020 Executive Committee (2018 - 2019). I continue to be involved with clubs and regions on consultative projects, mainly for AGM and charters reviews. I am contacted in some cases when counselling is required between parties.

Areas of Interest Within Skate Canada:With the new federal legislation governing not-for-profit organisations, the Skate Canada board has initiated some incredible work to bring the organization to a level of compliance. This is an aspect that I followed closely due to my great interest and the impact on section.

My experience in IT and project management would allow me to be a consultant on an IT committee and to ensure that the long-term vision is developed with the help of a knowledgeable team. The long-standing experience that I have in the IT field will help the board ensure that all investments are needed and maximized.

I am still very connected with clubs and regions. I understand the outcome of new rules, local management and parent management in the stands. I would be able to bring feedback from clubs and regions to the board committee.

The development of clubs and regions is important as they are the grassroots of ours sport. It is important to have a level of equity between the resource allowed for the sport elite and the club level athletes.

I have a strong attachment to synchronized skating which needs to be advanced.

I am an effective communicator, team player and motivator in my business. I manage a team of 21 trainers/contractors on a daily basis to ensure the business runs smoothly and effectively, where each day requires me to think critically and make decisions quickly and efficiently.

Marketing/Brand DevelopmentI have extensive experience in marketing, brand development, strategic marketing, developing partnerships with external stakeholders, public relations and media affairs. Governance ExperienceI am currently a member of the Hall of Fame/Heritage Committee, where we meet annually with the committee to decide on the hall of fame inductees. I am actively involved with receiving feedback from coaches, where discussions can extend to addressing issues in the overall picture. I would look forward to help bring their voices to the table.

Areas of Interest Within Skate Canada:I have always been interested to be involved with Skate Canada on a higher level. I am greatly inspired to help our skaters develop at the grassroots. A big area of interest is Athlete Development not only at the higher levels but starting with the foundations and younger skaters. In my opinion, this is where we start developing champions; from the ground up. I also have a big interest working with coaches and receiving feedback on what they would like and how they see the bigger picture. As a coach myself, I would love to be able to help share the voices of coaches.

Another area of interest is strategy development. I have done a lot of work in this area for my own business and think it is key to a successful organization. Determining which areas of focus are priority, identifying strengths and weaknesses and then developing processes that can be implemented to reach short and long term goals.

I am also a big believer in the LTAD, and truly believe in the vision of Skate Canada “inspiring all Canadians to embrace the joy of skating”.

Thank you for considering my application.

ERICA TOPOLSKIRunning for the Position of:1st - Director at Large (2-year term)2nd - Director at Large (1-year term)Present Office Held: N/AResidence: Boston, Massachusetts

Relevant Education, Career and Volunteer Experience:As a communications executive with nearly 20 years of experience in the U.S. and Canada, I have built my career helping companies drive awareness, strengthen brand reputation, navigate large-scale change, shape market trends and empower their employees.

So, what exactly does that mean?

I use words, images and videos to tell compelling stories that inspire people to stop, think and engage. Whether it’s a video about how technology is helping save endangered species at a South African Game Reserve or a blog post about kindergarten students improving their vocabulary with Artificial Intelligence, I thrive on making complex topics easy to understand and sharable.

I form relationships with industry experts and reporters to earn media coverage. From stories in The NY Times, Reuters and CNN, to opinion pieces in IT and industry publications, I have designed and implemented global media campaigns that have reached millions of people, launched new products, changed reputations and disrupted the competitive landscape in IT.

I design internal communications campaigns that use creative tactics and effective messaging to empower employees and strengthen corporate culture. From stickers on coffee cup sleeves, to provocative blog posts, hackathons and online photo contests, I’ve helped companies raise workforce awareness and participation rates by double digits.

I lead in times of crisis. I’ve developed and implemented communications plans for crisis situations around the world. In fact, some of my best work has never been heard of.

I build communities across companies and industries, bringing scientists, academics, venture capitalists, students, employees and business leaders together to share ideas, think about the future and influence change.

My experiences in the corporate world have taught me a number of valuable business lessons. I’ve been on the front lines of major acquisitions, divestitures, global partnerships and in times of crisis. Creating strategic communication plans for these corporate milestones gave me a deep understanding of global business operations and best practices.

As a volunteer, I spend most of my time in a rink or working on projects related to skating. Whether judging an event, monitoring skaters or as a Section board member, I believe it’s important to maintain relationships across our skating family.

My warmer volunteer pursuits have included time with STEM programs for middle school girls and reading programs for elementary school students in my community.

From my professional experience and skills to my volunteering passions, I would bring a diverse set of skills to the Skate Canada Board of Directors. Rising through the ranks from new hire to executive and from CanSkater to International judge, I have learned what it takes to work across complex organizations, break down barriers, lead without authority, foster consensus and develop teams. I am action oriented and known for my creativity and ability to get things done.

I have a Master’s degree in Communication and a Bachelor’s degree of English and Psychology. You can read more about my professional background at: www.linkedin.com/in/etopolski

Experience Relevant to the Skate Canada Board of Directors:Like many members of our skating family, my life on the ice began in a small-town figure skating club. As my involvement in figure skating has grown, those roots continue to shape my experience and are a constant reminder of the importance of maintaining a balance of club, sectional, national and international level involvement.

I am submitting my application for a Director at Large position for the Skate Canada Board of Directors because I believe my professional skills in communications and business, combined with my experiences as an official at local, national and international levels will contribute to the organization’s work on the 2018-2022 Strategic Plan.

I have a proven track record of uncovering, developing and telling stories that capture attention and drive engagement globally. I also know how to inspire and build belief among influencers and stakeholders. From compelling stories and media outreach that generates recognition of Skate Canada (and its Sections and Clubs) as the leader in delivery of skating programs, to awareness campaigns that help boost membership levels across all age categories, and resources that empower stakeholders to be Skate Canada brand advocates, there are many ways my expertise in corporate communications can support the Board in its foundational brand and marketing work.

My professional expertise and skills are only part of the equation. From my first steps on the ice to judging internationally, I have had the opportunity to work with, learn from and support many members of our skating family in a variety of roles. These experiences have provided me with insights into many aspects of our sport that would be helpful to the work of the Board of Directors.

Skating Roles & Activities:• Judge: International Ice Dance, National Singles and Pairs.• Sectional Referee and Technical Controller (Singles).• Evaluator: Gold all disciplines and Diamond Dances• Skater: NB level competitor in Singles and Regional Synchro competitor• CanSkate Program Assistant• Clinic Leader: Judge, Evaluator and Base Technical Specialist
