THE BERTOIA MOLDED SHELL SIDE CHAIR AND

BARSTOOL COLLECTION is a reintroduction of a design

that originally debuted in 1960. Merging the sublime

grace of the wire-form side chair with a touch of color

and natural flex, the reinvigorated classic adds colorful

accents to any room. Mix and match the chairs or keep

a singular color palette–the Bertoia Molded Shell Side

Chair offers an iconic design with a playful tone.

Harry Bertoia was part of a group of post-war

American sculptors (including Alexander Calder) who

experimented with mobile, pliable, and light forms in

their work. After partnering with Knoll, Bertoia moved

to East Greenville, Pennsylvania where he set up a

metal factory in a corner of Knoll’s production facility.

Florence Knoll insisted Bertoia pursue his craft without

any contractual obligations, enabling him to explore

what interested him. Knoll trusted that if left to his own

devices, Bertoia would produce something extraordinary.

From there, the Bertoia Collection was born.
