Carsharing is a model of car rental where people rent cars for short periods of time, often by the hour. They are attractive to customers who make only occasional use of a vehicle, as well as others who would like occasional access to a vehicle of a different type than they use day-to-day. The organization renting the cars may be a commercial business or the users may be organized as a democratically-controlled company, public agency, cooperative, ad hoc grouping. Today there are more than one thousand cities in the world where people can carshare.

Reduce carbon emissions.

Make it easier to live car-free in the city.

Carsharing differs from traditional car rentals in the following ways:

Reservation, pickup, and return is all self-service.

• Each member has access to their vehicle via a card key. Sensors access information from the card and the car opens, instantly available to the customer

• Reservations can be made by telephone, online or even from your cell phone

Carsharing is not limited by office hours.

Users are members that have been pre-approved to drive (background driving checks have been performed and a payment mechanism has been established).

Vehicles can be rented by the hour, as well as by the day.

Insurance and fuel costs are included in the rates.

iPhone Booking

Zipcar introduced the iPhone app for ease in booking. Simply click the app icon and based on your location, cars available in the vicinity are indicated by green flags on a map. Pick the spot closest to you and book right where you are standing. Your phone allows you to honk the car’s horn to easily locate where it is parked and even unlock the doors. NOLA Car Share will make this feature available to all of its members.

Vehicles are distributed throughout the service area, often located for access by public transport, business districts and highly

populated neighborhoods. Some are found in reserved street spots and others have a full area.

Local Government

Car sharing reduces the need for a government-owned fleet of cars, thus saving the taxpayers thousands of dollars. In April 2004, the City of Philadelphia itself opted in, becoming the first government worldwide to share cars with local residents in a major fleet reduction effort. The pioneering project helped replace 330 municipal vehicles, saving taxpayers $6 million (so far). Progressive Berkeley, CA, Portland, OR, and Minneapolis,MN soon followed Philadelphia's lead.

Why New Orleans?

Page 13: Nola Car Share Presentation

More and more people between the age of 25 and 35 are moving to New Orleans. It is a choice

prompted by a change in lifestyle, not career.

Many come from larger urban areas where car ownership was not a feasible option, but car sharing

is available.

They are eco-conscious and ready to make a difference
